Alton Towers - The Smiler Off-Ride - April 2018 | kittikoko
The Smiler is a steel roller coaster located at Alton Towers in Staffordshire, United Kingdom. Manufactured by Gerstlauer, it features 14 inversions and holds the world record for most inversions on a roller coaster. The Smiler has suffered a series of setbacks and ride incidents, including a malfunction at a press preview event which delayed the official opening date by two months, and in 2015, a human error causing a collision which left five riders seriously injured. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive was initiated, and the ride was closed for the remainder of that season. The ride eventually reopened on 19 March 2016 with revamped safety standards.
Plans to build The Smiler were submitted to the local authority in December 2011. Permission was granted on 15 March 2012 following a Staffordshire Moorlands Council meeting, despite some local opposition to its construction.[2] Gerstlauer, a German manufacturing company, was hired to build the roller coaster.[3] Less than a month after obtaining permission, Alton Towers launched a website announcing a new ride – codenamed Secret Weapon 7 (SW7) – for the 2013 season. Its codename followed a similar format used for other roller coasters during their teaser campaigns, such as SW4[citation needed] for Oblivion and SW6 for Thirteen.[4]
In January 2013, Alton Towers officially confirmed that the ride would be called The Smiler.[15] In February 2013, the park revealed some of the ride's elements.[16] The trains arrived in March 2013, as Alton Towers began posting images on both Twitter and their official Smiler website.[17][18][19] Vertical construction was completed approximately one month later, as the final piece of track was installed at the top of the first lift hill.[20][21][22]
Initially, The Smiler was expected to make its public debut in March 2013 for the park's opening day, but due to construction delays, the date was pushed back to 23 May 2013.[23] The date had to be pushed back further after technical issues were encountered during testing and a ride incident occurred during its preview event that stranded riders on the lift hill.[24][25] Following the incident on 17 May 2013, Alton Towers explained on their website that The Smiler would not open on the originally scheduled date due to unforeseen teething problems.[25][26]
The ride's delayed opening initially caused controversy as many had booked advance tickets and stays at the Alton Towers Hotel in order to be among the first to ride the coaster.[27] However, Alton Towers later announced it would allow those who had made advanced bookings to change their tickets and hotel reservations free of charge.[27][28] The Smiler eventually opened on 31 May 2013.[29]
The ride has been known for a number of significant structural and technical issues since its launch. The most serious incident occurred on 2 June 2015, when a loaded train collided with an empty test train, causing serious injuries to a number of riders.[30] Subsequently, Merlin Entertainments decided to close The Smiler, Saw – The Ride at Thorpe Park, and two other roller coasters at Chessington World of Adventures (all of which have since reopened) while safety protocols and procedures were evaluated.[31][32] The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) served a Prohibition Notice upon the Smiler, preventing the ride's use until remedial action had been completed.[33] On 27 July 2015, it was stated by Merlin Entertainments chief executive Nick Varney that The Smiler would not be opening this summer.[34] The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) initiated a criminal investigation that focused on the actions of two employees – a ride engineer and a ride operator – who may have failed to follow basic safety protocols leading up to the accident.[35]
In the incident's aftermath, Alton Towers and its owner Merlin Entertainments observed a drop in revenue and visitor numbers, which contributed to the decision to make up to 190 job redundancies at the theme park.[36] Six rides were closed during the 2016 season as a result of the crash.[37]
The ride eventually reopened on 19 March 2016 for the start of the 2016 season with additional safety features.[1] Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd was prosecuted by the HSE at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on 22 April 2016, in which the firm pleaded guilty.[39][40] On 27 September 2016, after a two-day hearing at Stafford Crown Court, Judge Michael Chambers QC fined Merlin Entertainments £5 million.
The Flume Unplugged (POV) Alton Towers England UK
I didn't realise when I sat at the front, just how WET I was going to get! It was our last ride of the day and even after a 3 hour ride home I was still damp. Also a bit silly to take my HD camera on,as it got really wet (my lens shield won't close now : ( waaah )
Katanga Canyon
Themed as an African village; created in 1992 and incorporated existing rapids ride. Rides include the Runaway Mine Train a wild speeding mine train rollercoaster and the Congo River Rapids. Both are well-established rides in the park whose ride tracks share a tunnel. The area has a new 'Explorer's' restaurant for 2009, with a shared indoor seating area. There is a shop located at the exits of the two rides called Katanga Cargo, hosting ancient tribal themed merchandise. Slightly outside the area (but still part of Katanga Canyon) is the popular 'Flume' ride, a log flume with boats themed as bath tubs and many ducks quacking around the station area. The Flume opened in 2004 after being re-themed from a traditional log flume ride. The ride is sponsored by the Imperial Leather toiletries company. The Flume does not fit into the theme of Katanga Canyon yet remains part of it according to the park, even though its entrance is now in Mutiny Bay.
The Flume was a Log Flume at Alton Towers in Staffordshire. It opened in 1981 and was rethemed in 2004 coinciding with its sponsorship by Imperial Leather. The ride was a bath time themed log flume with three drops. It was originally the longest log flume in the world when it opened in 1981. In February 2016, Alton Towers announced that the attraction would be closed permanently. On March 16, 2016, the park confirmed that SW8 would replace it. Later in 2016, the ride was demolished to make way for SW8.
What's coming to ALTON TOWERS in 2020?
Alton Towers reach the big 40 next year and we await to see exactly what will come to the park. We now have a clue as development has started up in Cloud Cuckoo Land the question is, is it a small re-theme or a large scale development?
Let us know your thoughts!

Alton Towers Monorail (Alton Towers Theme Park)
Alton Towers Monorail Shuttle System At Alton Towers Theme Park In Staffordshire.
The monorail opened on 13th August 1987. The whole thing was originally from Expo 86, but after this site was closed, it was shipped to England and installed for the park (so the system wasn't all new when it arrived in Staffordshire). It was originally manufatuerd by Von Roll Habegger, a Swiss industrial group.
The monorail cars originally had a Star Trek Theme. The cars were painted in an 80s futuristic grey and blue style and each train was named after a planet on the solar system. By 2008, the monorail became quite dated and the park decided a change was needed. One by one, the trains received new theme's and were printed the random designs seen today, by the work of a design company called Sarner. The same trains are used from when it was installed.
The system runs from the park's hotels and main car parks to the main entrance of the park. It can take around 15 mins to walk to the hotel from the park.
