Video tour through the medieval town of Speyer. One of Germany's oldest towns. The city is dominated by the Old Town Gate (Altpörtel) and the Romanesque Cathedral with its restored nineteenth-century westwork. After walking down the main street (Maximillianstraße) we enter the Cathedral. A number of German emperors are buried in the crypt, the most famous being Henry IV, who walked the Road to Canossa to ask the Pope for forgiveness after he was excommunicated during the Investiture Controversy (1077). After visiting the Cathedral, we climb the tower to have great views over the old town and the Rhine valley.

Speyer is a town in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, with approximately 50,000 inhabitants. Located beside the river Rhine, Speyer is 25 km (16 miles) south of Ludwigshafen and Mannheim. Founded by the Romans, it is one of Germany's oldest cities. Speyer is dominated by the Speyer Cathedral, a number of churches and the Altpörtel (old gate). In the cathedral, beneath the high altar, are the tombs of eight Holy Roman emperors and German kings.
The Speyer Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Speyer and is suffragan to the Archdiocese of Bamberg. The cathedral, which is dedicated to St. Mary, patron saint of Speyer (Patrona Spirensis) and St. Stephen is generally known as Kaiserdom zu Speyer (Imperial Cathedral of Speyer). Pope Pius XI raised Speyer Cathedral to the rank of a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church in 1925.
Begun in 1030 under Konrad II, with the east end and high vault of 1090–1103, the imposing triple-aisled vaulted basilica of red sandstone is the culmination of a design which was extremely influential in the subsequent development of Romanesque architecture during the 11th and 12th centuries. As the burial site for Salian, Staufer and Habsburg emperors and kings the cathedral is regarded as a symbol of imperial power. With the Abbey of Cluny in ruins, it remains the largest Romanesque church. It is considered to be a turning point in European architecture, one of the most important architectural monuments of its time and one of the finest Romanesque monuments.
In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of culturally important sites as a major monument of Romanesque art in the German Empire.

Today's market was extra special; I got to see the Altpörtel in Flammen in Speyer, that is, the Old Gate in Flames! This gate is one of the highest in Germany. The Christmas Market was packed. I loved the festive atmosphere and the cheerful crowds!

A visit to the Cathedral of Speyer
The dome of Speyer transmitted to me a kind of familiarity. Even though it was the first time I stepped Speyer. By photographing this monumental Romanesque building, by taking notes of all the details in its facades, a voice said to me: I've been here before.
I have visited hundreds of religious buildings in my career of architect, but walking the infinite central nave, chapels and visiting the crypt was a fascinating experience.
Deep in the cryp, surrounded by endless arches of segments in two colors, I remembered that many years ago, while studying architecture in Havana, I had to make a presentation on a Romanesque church and I chose this one. 30 years later I am visiting this building
