Luxor Egypt Travel Guide (from Cairo to Luxor for ONLY $25 Round Trip)
Getting from Cairo to Luxor for $25 roundtrip is just the start! Here’s a peak at what 2 days in Luxor looks like - how to get there, where to stay, and of course things to do :) We went to Luxor for two days back in May and it was HOT, but we still got a chance to see all the major sights: Luxor Temple, Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s Temple and Habu Temple. Luxor has a unique beauty that is fed by Nile and runs through each and every statue, pillar, and monument from thousands of years ago. It is still hard to believe that everything we saw was created by humans so long ago our modern minds can’t quite comprehend it. This place is one of the most special places we have ever visited, and it is well worth more than a couple of days to see.
If you’re interested in taking the cheap route from Cairo to Luxor via the Go-Bus like we did, check out ((

Luxor, Egypt - World's Greatest Open Air Museum by the Nile
Luxor, Egypt - The city on the east bank of the Nile River that is rich with lots of historical tombs, museums, monuments, and temples that made it the world's greatest open air museum. Luxor is the place where the kings and queens of old Egypt were crowned.
Luxor, Egypt, is the city that tourists visit for two different reasons: first of all it is filled with lots of historical museums and temples which people get astonished by. Second, being placed by the Nile River give this city a different look and atmosphere, one that make people happy with the view which they might as well receive from their hotel rooms.
There are several things we have seen in this city, the one that is really considered an open air museum because every single direction one tends to look in, there is something to be spotted. The ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor stand in the middle of the modern city, which was the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes.
On the opposite side across the Nile River, there are the monuments, temples, and tombs of the west bank Necropolis, which include the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut is one of the most famous landmarks of Luxor that tourists from all over the world come to see.
The west bank of Luxor has always been the main area for cemeteries and mortuary temples, and this is a role that has not been changed till these days. Luxor Temple is one of the sites that is also considered different since this ancient Egyptian complex is a place where people get to walk in between those long pillars and just think about how the Pharaohs managed to build them; this place is where many of the kings of Egypt where crowned.
Among the different sites which one will have to visit in Luxor, Egypt, Karnak Temple is on the list and it is considered a vast open air museum and the second ancient religious in the world, making Luxor a place that stands on top due to the different ancient historical treasures that it carries.
Generally speaking, there are several things one should see in Luxor and which are divided between the west bank and the east bank. In the West Bank, there is the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Madinet Habu (memorial temple of Ramses III), the Ramseseum (memorial temple of Ramses II), Tombs of the Nobles, Deir Al-Bahri which is the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, Malkata (palace of Amenophis III) as well as Colossi of Memnon (memorial temple of Amenophis III).
On the other side, those attractions found on the east bank include Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, Luxor Museum, and the Mummification Museum.
For those who plan to travel to Luxor, Egypt, they always include Aswan in this plan because they are next to one another and they could even book a room in a Nile Cruise that will take them through Luxor and Aswan and show them the historical landmarks during the trip by stopping at these spots and letting the tourists come down and enjoy the place - they could even book the whole thing with a tour guide.
Getting the chance to see the different monuments, temples, and museums is the number one reason behind heading to Luxor, Egypt, but some people plan to make this trip extraordinary with doing any of the activities which they might not get the chance to do anywhere else, such as riding the air balloon or else riding a horse carriage. In Aswan, make sure to go and enjoy the Nubian life if you have the time to, because the colors of the place will make you feel like you want to stay there forever.
Egypt is one of the countries that is stuffed with lots of historical places for the tourists to visit and come across but most of those who choose Egypt as their destination tend to start with Cairo, so if your trip is going to start there, you have to know that a train to Luxor will take about 12 hours and is considered very tiring, so you could better book a plane ticket. In addition to that, the weather in Egypt is usually hot in summer but when it comes to Luxor and Aswan, this hotness is doubled, so it is better to come in winter or the first days of spring.
This was our experience in Luxor, Egypt, so tell us how was yours if you have been there? Since we want our trips to Egypt to be different, we think that checking Al Fayoum ( or heading to Alexandria ( should be our next plans, or we could even surf the internet and search for the other cities or places in Egypt which are known with famous landmarks or activities which we might be able to visit.
At Connolly Cove channel, you will be able to receive several recommendations and suggestions for the places to visit in the countries you are planning to travel to. We are mainly focused on Ireland and Northern Ireland but lately we decided to expand to other countries that we even managed to reach Egypt eventually and see it differently, and here we are in Luxor this time.

LUXOR (source Wikipedia):
Luxor is a city in Upper (southern) Egypt and the capital of Luxor Governorate. The population numbers 506,588 (2012 estimate), with an area of approximately 417 square kilometres (161 sq mi).As the site of the Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, Luxor has frequently been characterized as the world's greatest open-air museum, as the ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor stand within the modern city. Immediately opposite, across the River Nile, lie the monuments, temples and tombs of the West Bank Necropolis, which includes the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. Thousands of tourists from all around the world arrive annually to visit these monuments, contributing greatly to the economy of the modern city.
LUXOR TEMPLE (source Wikipedia):
Luxor Temple is a large Ancient Egyptian temple complex located on the east bank of the Nile River in the city today known as Luxor (ancient Thebes) and was constructed from 1100 BC-1600 BC . In the Egyptian language it is known as ipet resyt, the southern sanctuary. In Luxor there are several great temples on the east and west banks. Four of the major mortuary temples visited by early travelers and tourists include the Temple of Seti I at Gurnah, the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahri, the Temple of Ramesses II (a.k.a. Ramesseum), and the Temple of Ramesses III at Medinet Habu; and the two primary cults temples on the east bank are known as the Karnak and Luxor.
THE VALLEY OF KINGS (source Wikipedia):
The Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Gates of the Kings, is a valley in Egypt where, for a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, rock cut tombs were excavated for the Pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt).
The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes (modern Luxor), within the heart of the Theban Necropolis. The wadi consists of two valleys, East Valley (where the majority of the royal tombs are situated) and West Valley.
With the 2005 discovery of a new chamber and the 2008 discovery of two further tomb entrances, the valley is known to contain 63 tombs and chambers (ranging in size from KV54, a simple pit, to KV5, a complex tomb with over 120 chambers). It was the principal burial place of the major royal figures of the Egyptian New Kingdom, as well as a number of privileged nobles. The royal tombs are decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology and give clues as to the beliefs and funerary rituals of the period. Almost all of the tombs seem to have been opened and robbed in antiquity, but they still give an idea of the opulence and power of the Pharaohs.
This area has been a focus of archaeological and egyptological exploration since the end of the eighteenth century, and its tombs and burials continue to stimulate research and interest. In modern times the valley has become famous for the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun (with its rumours of the Curse of the Pharaohs), and is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. In 1979, it became a World Heritage Site, along with the rest of the Theban Necropolis. Exploration, excavation and conservation continues in the valley, and a new tourist centre has recently been opened.
Luxor Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Luxor in Egypt.
Egypt’s Golden Age commenced with Thebes, known today as Luxor, which lies on the eastern bank of the Nile. Homer referred to Luxor’s temples as, „El-Uqsor“, “The Place of Palaces”. From Ramses to Tut-ench-Amun…from Tutmosis to Hatschepsut...Egyptian rulers have bequeathed a priceless inheritance of monumental architecture. Statues from the era of Ramses the Second, temples, necropolis’ – cities of the dead – hieroglyphics, sphinxes and obelisks…they’re all here in Luxor, the birthplace of modern Egyptology.

Tour of Egypt from Cairo to Luxor (See Pyramids, Sphinx, Nile Cruise, Valley of the Kings)
I had always wanted to see the Pyramids in Egypt and put it off for years. But my girlfriend talked me into taking the plunge and going for it so we went and had one of the most epic vacations of our lives. I actually climbed inside the second largest Pyramid in Giza and layed in the Pharos tomb, climbed the great Pyramid, Swam in the Nile, held a baby Nile crocodile, smoked a Huka and much more. Just amazing!
It happened in ... Luxor

Luxor, cite of the ancient city of Thebes is home to two-thirds of the world's ancient monuments. Inspired by sights like Valley of the Kings and the memorial temple of Ramesses III, thousands of tourists come to Luxor every year.
But there is one dark stain in Luxor's rich history of international tourism. For one Swiss family, a 1997 holiday in the Land of the Pharaohs came to an abrupt and tragic end when six gunmen opened fire at the temple of Queen Hatshepsut.
Among the sixty-two tourists who lost their liveson that November day was one Swiss family that saw three generations perish in a single morning.
The massacre, which effectively ended Egyt's tourism industry for nearly half a year led to many questions.
Questions of the effectiveness of the Egyptian investigation that was sending wrong bodies to distraught families and questions of the motivation behind the attack. Was the massacre a religious statement or a political one against the unpopular regime of then Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak?

ExploreTube | Luxor City in 6 minutes
Located in Upper Egypt Luxor has been described as the world’s largest open-air museum. Nowadays it has been elevated to the status of governorate, although it is still classified as being in the province of Qena. Luxor has a population of round about 230,000, most of whom are employed in tourism somehow, although there are many who are employed in agriculture and commerce. Luxor is one of the most popular destinations in Egypt and qualifies as one of those places that you simply must see. Because of this almost every Egyptian tourist company has an office somewhere in the town.
It has been estimated that Luxor contains about a third of the most valuable monuments and antiquities in the whole world, which makes it one of this planet’s most important tourist sites. Monuments such as The Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, Deir El-Bahri (the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut), the worker's village at Deir El-Medina, the list goes on and on and on. Alhough most visitors will stay for just a few days, it would take a substantial amount of time to visit everything in this amazing town.
Once known as Thebes, Luxor’s importance in ancient Egyptian history cannot be denied. It was the religious capital almost all throughout the Pharaonic period which is why the town is dominated by the two temples: the Temple of Luxor and the immense Temple of Karnak: the world’s largest temple complex.
Dedicated to the ancient Egyptian god Amun Ra, the Temple of Karnak was constantly expanded by successive pharaohs, each adding his, or her, tribute to the god. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom under the reign of Mentuhotep (11th Dynasty), but most of what can be seen today are from the New Kingdom. Other parts of the complex include sites dedicated to Mut, the wife of Amun Ra, and their son Khonsu.
Most people know that Luxor was once Thebes, but “Thebes” was not what the ancient Egyptians called it. Ancient texts show that it was called T-apt, “The Shrine”, with the ancient Greeks calling it Tea Pie. The Arabs had problems with pronunciation and so it became Thebes to them. The name vanished then as the area submitted to the desert and then by the 10th-century Arab travelers thought the ruins were of grand buildings so started to call it Al-Oksour, or “site of the palaces” which evtnually became Luxor.
Luxor is situated 670km (416 miles) to the south of Cairo, 220km (137 miles) to the north of Aswan, and 280km (174 miles) to the west of Hurghada. It is the second most popular place to visit in Egypt, behind Cairo, and is accessible in a number of ways.
Walking through the market in Luxor, Egypt
Hopefully this video conveys some of the furious activity of the market -- it's got the sights and sounds, but unfortunately not the smells, which of course are always a good part of sensory overload (the sound toward the end is the call to prayer). This is only about 1/10 as crazy as the markets in Cairo, which I really wanted to show, but every time I started filming someone would stop me to be on camera.

Never a dull moment in Luxor
Luxor is the largest open air musuem, you will never have a dull moment. The city surrounds 2 huge, surviving ancient monuments: graceful Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple, a mile north.
Shopping in the Luxor Souk Egypt
At last, some free time to investigate the Luxor bazaar/souk. Not that I needed anything except a T-shirt with camels on them...and a few scarfs...and cheapie scarabs (Ancient Egyptians believed scarabs provided good luck and protection).
Surrounded by salesmen practically begging for our business because of the lack of tourism in Egypt post-Democracy, I truly felt sorry for them. Unfortunately, you can't buy from everyone. If this had been our first trip to Egypt, we probably would have needed an entire caleche to carry purchases back! Shopping and browsing is always fun, even if you don't buy.
EGYPT: TERRORIST GUN ATTACK IN LUXOR SITUATION UPDATE (4)
English/Nat
Police say one of the six gunmen in the massacre in southern Egypt was a member of the Islamic militant group that has claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a statement faxed to Western news agencies, the group says it wanted to take hostages to win the release of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, who is jailed in the U-S.
In all, 68 people were killed on Monday, 58 of them foreign tourists.
A coroner's report says some of the victims were stabbed after they had been shot.
President Hosni Mubarak visited the site on Tuesday and ordered beefed-up security.
He also accepted the resignation of his interior minister, who's in charge of the Egyptian police.
Despite the previous day's massacre, some foreign tourists still made their way on Tuesday to the Hatshepsut Temple, just outside Luxor, in southern Egypt.
But it was generally quiet -- bloodstains like this a reminder of how 68 people died -- 58 of them foreign tourists.
Egypt's most powerful Islamic militant faction, the al-Gamaa al-Islamiyya, or the Islamic Group, on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the slaughter.
Egypt's President toured the site on Tuesday. He's already ordered even-heavier security to protest tourists.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
(It's) something could happen anywhere in the world, but the point is that we are going to take much more measures to secure every single person here. We consider him as one of our brothers and sons and we are going to take much more tougher measures.
SUPER CAPTION: Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt
Those who perpetrated this act weren't religious, said Mubarak. They were criminals.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Look .... we cannot make correlation to Islamicists, they are only criminals. They have no idea about their religion. Anybody who kills any person, Muslim, Christian, Jew is committing a grave mistake. Their religion, their conviction, nobody should interfere in that. Those who are killing these people are not religious .. not related to any religion in the world.
SUPER CAPTION: Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt
And Mubarak accepted the resignation of Interior Minister Hassan el-Alfy.
The interior minister heads the Egyptian police; el-Alfy had the job four years.
As always there appears to be a certain resignation amongst travellers that this sort of thing can happen anywhere in the world.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Well I was shocked for one thing, and disturbed, but I understand that those things do happen when you travel internationally, you run the risk of experiencing these kind of things. It's a real tragedy. The situation, of course that occurred here in Cairo a few months back was disturbing and I considered not bringing my group, but I said well that's just an isolated incident and everything will be OK, but then yesterday I was quite disturbed but I tried to quieten my people and tell them everything's going to be OK and don't worry, and so hopefully everything will be O-K.
SUPER CAPTION: James K. Peters, tourist and owner of travel agency in the U-S
In a statement, the Islamic group has said the tourists were killed while the group's gunmen tried to take them hostage.
Witnesses, however, did not describe any hostage attempt, saying that the six gunmen climbed from their car and fired their automatic rifles randomly at tour groups.
The statement also said the group wanted to use the hostages as a bargaining chip to obtain the release of its spiritual leader, Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman.
Rahman is in jail in the United States serving a jail sentence for conspiring to blow up the World Trade Centre in February 1993.

Exploring the charm of Luxor on Egypt road trip with Mahindra Adventure, Vlog 8
Hot air balloons always seemed fascinating right? We got lucky in Luxor to take a tour in one! We were impressed by the sheer size of these balloons also by the great aerial views that they offer. Egyptian landscapes are quite mind boggling, especially that sight from up top of lush green farms bordering the dry desert! This and much more in the day 8 vlog of our road trip in Egypt with Mahindra Adventure.
