Biggin Hill to Solent Airport on a cold and snowy winters day | PA28 (Full ATC)
The start of 2019 in the south east of the UK has been a real mixed bag of weather and flying conditions. We've had clear skies, overcast cloud, rain, gusting wind and now snow!!
I have been trying for a while now to get to Kemble with fellow pilot Graham with our last attempt 1 month prior being cancelled due to low cloud covering Headcorn. Following the disappointment of not being able to go anywhere, we reserved the date - 2nd February for another attempt.
A couple of days before our planned flight the UK was hit by a couple of bouts of snow with the south east and Kent getting its fair share. I actually called Headcorn a day before the flight to find out how it had affected the airfield and if it was even worth starting with my flight planning. My suspicions were actually a lot worse that I had anticipated. Not only had the heavy snowfall made the entire airfield unusable, it had waterlogged the grass runway. On top of this the snowfall caused the River Beult (which runs parallel to the runway) to burst its banks and also flood the runway.
So with Headcorn a definite no-go but the weather forecast actually looking good for the 2nd February, I arranged with Graham for us to go back to my old club based at Biggin Hill where they have a nice long tarmac runway and plan the flight in their PA28 G-BUJO.
We both got to Biggin Hill early to finalise the plans and get our PPR. After visiting the Kemble airport website the webcam revealed a complete covering of snow and the airport information simply stated 'Airfield Closed'. So we has to start thinking of a plan B.
Wherever we decided to go, the airfield needed to have a tarmac runway, so we pulled out the charts to look for possible options. Elstree was our first call, but were told on the phone that although they have a tarmac runway it was covered in ice. Wellesbourne was another option and all looked good but by now the time was getting on and we had yet to clean the plane and re-fuel, as well as plotting our route so, decided that was a little too far in the circumstances.
So we started looking towards the south coast and made our next call to Solent Airport as it is now known. This time it was much more encouraging as they not only had a nice long tarmac runway, it was clear of any snow or ice and the weather was good. They helpfully allowed us to book PPR over the phone so that was it, decision made.
With the route planned our next it was to the aircraft on the stand in the coldness of the outdoors. The PA28 was covered in snow so the first job was to brush all of that off and then de-ice it. Both the fuel and oil needed topping up all adding to the time.
As I am no longer a full flying member at Alouette I was not covered under the insurance to fly as pilot in command, so my job for the flight was as P2 (co-pilot) in charge of planning, navigation and the radio while Graham did the flying.
So, an hour and a half later than planned, we taxied out to the engine run up area to do our power checks, then onwards to runway 03 for departure. On approaching the holding point we informed ATC that we were ready for departure who then asked if we could accept an immediate take off. We were all ready to go and confirmed that we were ready for an immediate take off.
The only issue is that the holding point Charlie is still quite a distance to taxi for runway 03 and just before we were about to turn to line up on the runway ATC instructed us to cancel our take off. We acknowledged this and then followed instructions to taxi to the holding point J1 which is a shorter distance to the runway.
After waiting for an opposite direction inbound jet to touch down and vacate the runway we were then given our instructions to line up on runway 03 and cleared for take off, and we were on our way.
Shortly after take off, I had the feeling that there was a minor issue with the aircraft transponder. The controller asked us to confirm the level we are climbing to and gave us a reporting point at the Kenley gliding site but also reminded us to squawk 7047 which is the conspicuity code used at Biggin Hill. We were already squawking that code and we confirmed this to the controller who didn't mention anything further.
Our route took us on a westerly track keeping north of the controlled airspace around Gatwick and as we climbed away we could see the hills were all covered with a layer of snow. The gliding site at Kenley didn’t appear to be active but we gave it a wide berth anyway..........

Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos:
The families and friends of four pals who tragically died in a head-on crash with an Uber on Saturday have paid tribute to their lost ones. The young men, who have been named locally as Declan Grove, 19, Matty Walshaw, 18, Brandon Frew, 18, and Caelan Megson, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene in Broadway, the Horsforth area of Leeds. Two girls, aged 16 and 17, who were in the car with the victims, and the 42-year-old driver of the Uber are currently in hospital with serious injuries. Police said the six friends, who drove a five-seater Seat Leon ‘at speed’, crashed head-on with the Uber travelling from the opposite direction at around 2.40am on Saturday. Chara Andrews, 19, told how he had grown up with all four of them and felt ‘absolutely empty’. He said: ‘When I found out this morning I didn’t want to believe it. They were the best set of lads you could ever meet. ‘We’ve had some of the best times and I feel happy now remembering it. I know they all together and looking down on us at the moment. ‘Everybody loved them all and we’re all meeting up tonight to toast them – we are all pulling together and remembering the good times.’ As police removed cordons and re-opened the road to traffic today groups of mourners arrived at the scene to lay flowers and comfort each other. A group of more than 20 people hugged each other and cried as two women taped flowers to a lamppost next to the crash scene. One grieving mother’s tribute read: ‘To my beautiful son. You were so loved and adored. Rest in peace Always in my heart and mind forever I love you so much Mum.’ Another read: ‘To Matty your always in our hearts forever, words cannot describe the love I have for you little bro, keep smiling up there kid. R.I.P Love you always.’ Adam Omar, 34, who was asleep with his partner at when the crash happened, told how he heard a ‘skid’ and then a bang which was like an ‘explosion’. He went outside and saw ‘half a car’ in the middle of the road and a taxi also stationary in the road. He said: ‘There was a young girl lying in the middle of the road.’ Adam’s partner, who preferred not be named, said: ‘She was obviously in pain because she was making noises and trying to move but it was obviously hurting her. ‘After all the police and paramedics had turned up and a car pulled up then a girl got out of the car and started legging it. ‘And an older woman got out of the car and started running, panicking, and saying “where is she?”, then they ran over to the police cars.’ The couple told how as the busy road was closed it looked like the “the whole of Yorkshire emergency services” were at the scene with “blue lights everywhere”. Another neighbour, who also did not want to be named, said her son had been awoken by the sound of the crash. She said: ‘He looked out of his window and saw plumes of smoke and debris. ‘A taxi was facing out of the junction and the car was facing into it. Family pays tribute to girl, 24, killed in hit-and-run on pe

Drugged up Drunk Driver Kills Pal in 103mph Motorway Horror Crash
Portsmouth,Hampshire Saturday 7th January 2016 Pictured Emergency at the scene after the fatal 103 mph crash on the 26th June 2016 : A Baby Faces Drunk drugged up driver has been jailed for nearly Five year by Portsmouth Crown Court.Unlicensed driver Billy Plested overturned his Vauxhall Corsa at 103mph while nearly double the legal limit on the M27 at Portsmouth.
Now he has been jailed for four years and eight months for killing his friend, rear passenger Luke Shaw, 20, who died of his injuries three days after the incident in hospital.
Speaking after Plested, 21, was jailed at Portsmouth Crown Court yesterday, Sgt Richard Grant, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Hampshire police, said: ‘Had he just decided to call a taxi or a friend to pick them up, then this would not have happened.
‘This case shows just how important it is for drivers not to drink or take drugs and then drive. The consequences can be fatal and it is simply not worth the risk.’
The court heard Plested drank half a litre of spirits and lager, drinking between go-kart races with his friends in Gosport.
Just 30 minutes after leaving the Castle In The Air pub in Fareham, Plested had undertaken cars, swerving and snaking on the M27.
Investigators found he over-steered, travelling 50 metres before hitting the embankment, overturning and then coming to a stop.
Fern Russell, prosecuting, said blood analysis found Plested had 147mg of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, nearly double the 80mg limit.
Cannabis over the limit was also found in his blood as he smoked a joint after work at 2.30pm on that day, Portsmouth Crown Court heard.
When a witness stopped at crash, the court heard Plested said: ‘I’ve killed my friend.’
Plested’s front seat passenger, who was 19 at the time, suffered concussion and cuts to his head and fingers and was cut out of the car.
The defendant suffered a fracture to his skull and eye socket in the June 26 crash last year.
Sentencing, judge Sarah Munro QC jailed Plested for four years and eight months.
Speaking of Mr Shaw’s family, the judge said: ‘Their devastation and feeling of emptiness in their lives are hard to overstate.’
Although Plested was charged with careless driving, the judge added: ‘Your driving was, in my view, arguably dangerous.’
A black box fitted by an insurance company revealed Plested’s vehicle was travelling at 103mph just before the crash at 11.15pm.
Ms Russell said the three friends had earlier booked for five races at a go-kart track in Fareham Road, Gosport.
In between each race, Plested drove to pubs when they started drinking at 4pm.
The group ordered a double brandy and coke at the Hoeford Inn after one race and a double rum and coke after the second race.
The licensee refused to serve them again after being told they drove to the pub, and after the third race the trio went to the Castle In The Air pub in Fareham.
There they ordered two more doubles, and then again two more doubles after the fourth race. Receipts seized by police revealed 11 drinks orders had been made.
After the fifth race, the landlady at the Castle In The Air pub saw Plested lean over the bar to try to take Guinness and the trio left.
Ms Russell added Mr Shaw, of Bitterne, had not been wearing a seat belt but a forensic collision investigator from Hampshire police found he may not have survived even if he was wearing one.
Stephen Parish, for Plested, said: ‘This young man will suffer the rest of his life, just as the family of the deceased will for the rest of their lives. He has this on his conscience.’
Plested, of Cox Row, Chandler’s Ford, pleaded guilty at the first opportunity to causing death by careless driving while unfit through drink and drugs, and a count of causing death while unlicensed.
The court heard Plested had a full licence, but told the DVLA of a diabetic episode and was on a restricted licence, which then lapsed.
In a tribute released after his death, Mr Shaw’s mother, Tracy Pearce, said: ‘He will always remain in our memories and, most importantly, our hearts.’
Plested was banned from driving for five years with a 28-month extension.©UKNIP

Trains at Eastleigh, SWML - 3/2/18
In this video I visited Eastleigh station on the South Western Main Line for the Great Western Railway diversions. Services are seen by South Western Railway and Great Western Railway.
I found Eastleigh to be very different this time round considering there were no passing services, no CrossCountry and no Southern due to closures between Soutjamtpon Airport Parkway and Southampton Central. Great Western Railway diverted here due to there being closures also between Southampton Central and Fareham. The views were of course stunning and was great to see so many Desiro combos! I will always revisit Eastleigh as well, it is a recommended station too!

LEGO London Regent Street Bus Stop
To celebrate 100 years of London buses and the longest running motorised bus system in the world, someone decided to make a fully working Lego bus stop made with more than 100 000 pieces in the middle of one of the most conjested cities globally. Although it took a lot of time and effort to journey there, I decided I couldn't miss it and I recommend every Lego fan goes see it but you better be quick because it's only there until Tuesday the 15th of July 2014. It's placed very close to Hamley's (a very large toy store) so if you're going to Hamley's make sure to check this out on the way.
Please like, comment & subscribe and as always...
Thanx for Watching :)
P.S. IT WAS REALLY CROWDED!!!
