Amacayacu National Park, Ticuna, Amazonas, Colombia
Amacayacu National Park protects a large swath of the Amazon region in southern Colombia. The park is accessed by boat from the city of Leticia, and it’s home to primates and hundreds of bird species. San Martín de Amacayacu is an indigenous Ticuna settlement deep in the rainforest. Southwest of the park is Puerto Nariño village, with a viewing tower and trails. Nearby Lake Tarapoto is known for its pink dolphins.
The Amacayacu National Natural Park was created with the purpose of reserving outstanding and representative areas of the national natural heritage, conserving genetic banks, perpetuating representative samples of biotic communities as well as wildlife species , maintain biological diversity and ecological balance through the conservation and protection of natural areas. Besides having an exuberant fauna and flora, the Park area is overlapped (shared) by 18% with ancestral indigenous territories of the Tikuna ethnic group, who today seek a balance between traditional forms and the contemporary dynamics of life modern. The traditional Tikuna family is nuclear, patrilineal and monogamous. The Tikuna language belongs to the independent Tikuna linguistic family.
The main subsistence activities for the Tikunas are fishing, agriculture, hunting, ecotourism, handicrafts and monitoring of their resources.

Billy on Amacayacu
The Amacayacu is a tributary of the Amazon River in Colombia. I shot this video while on a day trip out from where we were staying at Casa Gregorio in San Martin de Amacayacu. Our guide was a local Ticuna man named Billy. If you are visiting the Amazon in Colombia you should definitely stay at Casa Gregorio.

A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride.
An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on
Protected Areas, has defined National Park as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people, Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a national park in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. Some would say that the first official
national park to be designated as such at its creation was Mackinac Island, legislated in 1875. Australia's Royal
National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, 6,555 national parks worldwide met its criteria in 2006. IUCN is still discussing the parameters of defining a national park.
National parks are almost always open to visitors. Most national parks provide outdoor recreation and camping opportunities as well as classes designed to educate the public on the importance of conservation and the natural wonders of the land in which the national park is located.

Amazon, Alive for Humanity - Consultation Essential for Amazon Conservation - Colombia
Having lived for millennia in the forests of the ‘Amazonian Trapezoid’, today the Amacayacu National Park, indigenous communities there are now treated as an obstacle to conservation. Their rights have been systematically violated since the National Park was created in 1975.
In April 2015 the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism signed an agreement to carry out the construction of a tourist trail, but without previous consultation of local communities. This infrastructure project would include the construction of extensive walking routes and amenities along an 8km route through pristine forest, communities and rivers.
The Tikuna, Yaguas and Cocamas who live in San Martín de Amacayacu have denounced the violation of their right to free, prior and informed consent. As such they have urged the Colombian government to stop the construction activities and carry out the consultation process.
