Flying to Tokyo but because of a Japan Typhoon, we were not able to fly out of Amami Oshima to Tokyo Japan. We are stuck on this Japan island, but we make the best out of the canceled flight to Tokyo.

DYA717 October 1 6, 2018 Getting to Amami Oshima
Oct 1 – HNL-LAX-LAS – nothing interesting except for foodies; Oct 2 – went to Metro Pizza near the UNLV campus and near Roy’s place; ONO!; Oct 3 – LAS-SFO-HND 7 a.m. flight out of LAS; then SFO-HND – long flight; Arrived HND – date change; Oct 4 – HND-KOJ (Kagoshima, Kyushu) Caught the monorail to get to Domestic terminal 2. If you show your passport, your international plane ticket and your connecting domestic ticket, the monorail is free! 1 hr 20 min later, landed at Kagoshima Airport. Raining cats and dogs. Shuttle bus to town approximately 1250-yen, approx. 40-minutes. Town was pretty good – rain stopped; Joyfull Restaurant and had a snack; Oct 5 – Kagoshima 7 a.m. breakfast at the Toyoko Inn. Got maps from the tourist center and bought me a 500-yen all-day ON/OFF bus pass. I made a mistake. Had I paid 600-yen, I could have a 1-day pass for all the different buses and also the trams; I ignored several stops and got off at Shiroyama lookout which is something like looking at the city from Punchbowl! The next place I stopped was at Saigo’s Cave, a place he made his last stand before commiting seppuku at age 49; a quick lunch of some kind of tonkatsu-don. Then I visited the Segodon Taiga Drama Kan, some sort of museum with pictures and artifacts from the TV drama. Paid 480-yen a discounted rate because of my 1-day bus pass. I couldn’t take photos of the pictures of the actors nor their autographed stuffs; Oct 6 – Kagoshima Checked out of the Toyoko Inn and went HE-LE on to the bus station; 1250-yen airport shuttle; KOJ-ASJ approx. 50-min flight; Island Bus 1100-yen airport to Amami town; checked into Amami Sunplaza Hotel; BURA-BURA in the neighborhood.

- Geography
Sado is located in the Sea of Japan and is a part of Niigata Prefecture. The island is 855 km2（330 mile2）in area which is bigger than the 23 wards of Tokyo（621 km2 = 240 mile2）and the country of Bahrain（758 km2 = 293 mile2）which is ranked 184th in the world. The tourist season is in summer, but there are also people who make the effort to come in winter to view the rough waves of the Sea of Japan at that time.
- Landmarks
Landmarks include Sado Gold Mine whose mountain top has been cleaved in half due to the efforts of gold mining, Toki Forest Park where you can see the Japanese crested ibis which is an endangered species, and the Ogi Diving Center where you can get a unique sea kayaking experience through blue grottoes and the waters of the Sea of Japan. There are also plenty of highlights such as Chokoku-ji Temple where you can have more than 30 Buddhist experiences including one involving entering a coffin. Usually between April and October, you can view traditional nighttime performances of Noh theater which occur outside the temple, and with Sado being the base for the world-famous Kodo wadaiko drumming troupe, you can hear the drumming amid nature as one example of art and nature splendidly co-existing.
- Food
The specialty of Sado Island which is completely encircled by the Sea of Japan has got to be seafood. It’s no exaggeration to say that sushi with several times the taste can be savored here at only a fraction of the price charged in Tokyo. The new local dish that has been all the rage is buri-katsudon or deep-fried yellowtail on rice. Natural yellowtail deep-fried as a cutlet covered in a special sauce consisting of ago-dashi soy sauce topped on Sado rice makes for a superb dish. The sake brewed from the nature of the island is also delicious, and the island is also home to the brewery for Manotsuru sake which is the sake served in first class on Air France flights.
- Getting Around
It takes the better part of 2 hours from Tokyo to Niigata Station, followed by a 15-minute bus ride to Niigata Port. And then it’s a trip by ferry for 1-2.5 hours from Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port on Sado Island.
Rental cars are handy for getting around the island. There is no train service. Rental electric bicycles are also convenient.
- Accommodations
Accommodations around Ryotsu Port are convenient on the first day. Aikawa and Mano which are located in the center of the island are also great as starting points for sightseeing.

The Okinawa Islands (沖縄諸島 Okinawa Shotō?) are an island group in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, and are the principal island group of the prefecture.[1] The Okinawa Islands are part of the larger Ryukyu Islands group, and are located between the Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture to the northeast and the Sakishima Islands of Okinawa Prefecture to the southwest.[2]
The Okinawa Islands, apart from the four main islands, contain three smaller island groups: the Kerama, Yokatsu, and Iheya-Izena island groups.[1][3][4]
The Okinawa Islands are the political, cultural and population center of Okinawa Prefecture.[1] The prefectural capital of Naha is within the island group. 90% of the population of the prefecture reside within the Okinawa Islands, primarily on the largest island of the group, Okinawa Island.[1] Access to the various Okinawa Islands is primarily via small airports which connect to Naha Airport. Additionally, the islands are connected via ferry service to the Port of Naha in the prefectural capital.[1]
The Okinawa Islands are within the subtropical climate zone, which supports the production of sugarcane, pineapples and cut flowers.[2] The military bases of the United States in Okinawa Prefecture are located on the Okinawa Islands.[3]
Historically the rule of the Ryukyu Kingdom, centered on Okinawa Island, consolidated the Okinawa Islands before spreading south to the Miyako and Yaeyama Islands and north to Amami Ōshima.

Yonaguni-jima(Island) of Japan is a very strange-shaped island and I just wonder if the island was created by Someone. Here is a short story of it and the reason why I think so.
