It is located approximately 380 kilometres (210 nmi) south of the southern tip of Kyūshū and 250 kilometres (130 nmi) north of Okinawa. The island is of volcanic origin, with Mount Yuwanda at 605 metres (1,985 ft) above sea level at its highest peak. The coast of the island is surrounded by a coral reef. It is surrounded by the East China Sea on the west and the Pacific Ocean on the east.
The climate of Amami Ōshima is classified as has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) with very warm summers and mild winters. The rainy season lasts from May through September. The island is subject to frequent typhoons.
Fauna
Amami Ōshima is home to several rare or endangered endemic animals, including the Amami rabbit and the Lidth's jay, both of which are now found only in Amami Ōshima and Tokunoshima. The Amami rabbit is sometimes called a living fossil because it represents an ancient Asian lineage that has elsewhere disappeared.
The island is also home to the habu, a venomous snake that can be found throughout the Ryūkyū Islands. Mongooses were introduced to kill the habu, but have become another problem, as an increase in the mongoose population has been linked to the decline of the Amami rabbit and other endemic species.[2]
Whale watching to see humpback whales has become a featured attraction in winter in recent years.[3] It is also notable that North
The island marks the northernmost limit of dugong distribution, with occasional sightings throughout the 20th and into the 21st century.[6]
Amami Oshima is the only place where a nesting of leatherback turtle has been seen in Japan.
History
It is uncertain when Amami Ōshima was first settled. Stone tools indicate settlement in the Japanese Paleolithic period, and other artifacts, including pottery, indicate a constant contact with Jōmon, Yayoi and Kofun period Japan.
States until 1953, at which time it reverted to the control of Japan.
Since February 1974, a 7,861-hectare (19,420-acre) area that includes portions of the island and surrounding sea has been protected as Amami Gunto Quasi-national Park.[7] The area also has a large mangrove forest.
IN 2001 there was a naval battle between a North Korean trawler and Japanese Coast Guard ships near the island, in which the North Korean ship was sunk.
Economy
The economy of Amami Ōshima is based on agriculture (sugar cane, rice and sweet potatoes), commercial fishing, and the distillation of shōchū. The favorable climate allows for two rice crops a year. Seasonal tourism is also an important part of the

J-Trip Plan - The Hot Springs of Kyushu & Country Life in Tottori Prefecture [1080p]
Hot springs are sure to warm your body and soul, especially during the colder months. Our correspondent recommends hot spring areas in Kumamoto and Oita Prefectures. Many inns there are back in business after the earthquakes that hit Kyushu in April 2016. Our reporter escapes the city to Tottori Prefecture. She climbs the sand dunes and takes a boat ride through pristine waters. She also gets a taste of country life with an overnight homestay in the town of Chizu.

JAPAN TRAVEL: TOKYO RETURN! Part #1 Day 19
And so our big Japan tour comes to a close and brings us back to the country's mighty capital Tokyo. The truth is, despite all the amazing towns and temples, countryside and culture that we absorbed, we did miss it a little bit.
We had two more full days to play in the capital and on the first we took in Sensoji and its neighbourhood, ate the best fried chicken ever, gawped at the geekiness of Akihabara, had a quick stop at the Ota Memorial Museum and had a night out in Ueno courtesy of my friend Mao.
Hell of a city, hell of a welcome back day!
We ate:
Karaage at Yukari
Katsukare at Fuji Soba
Yakitori and other nibbles at Tonbou
Until the next time!

Oshima Tsumugi Silk Pongee is known as one of the worlds’ top three textiles, along with Persian carpets and Gobelin tapestries.
It is said to have existed since approximately 1,300 years ago, from the Nara Period in Japan, and although today, it is being produced in various areas of Kagoshima Prefecture, because its roots originate in Amami Oshima, it is formally called the “authentic Amami Oshima Tsumugi Silk Pongee”
Dyed in mud, which is made possible only in the iron rich mud born from Amami’s nature, silk threads are dyed into a beautiful, glossy black.
Fine graphical splash patterns drawn by a mass of over 10 million dots, is reversible, which is characteristic of plain weave.
Taking over six months to make one bolt of fabric, through a creative process of 40 processes, an authentic Amami Oshima Tsumugi Silk Pongee has nonpareil unique characteristics.
I will continue to transmit the attractions of the authentic Amami Oshima Tsumugi Silk Pongee, a spiritual textile created in Amami, known as the Silk Road of the Ocean.

DYA717 October 1 6, 2018 Getting to Amami Oshima
Oct 1 – HNL-LAX-LAS – nothing interesting except for foodies; Oct 2 – went to Metro Pizza near the UNLV campus and near Roy’s place; ONO!; Oct 3 – LAS-SFO-HND 7 a.m. flight out of LAS; then SFO-HND – long flight; Arrived HND – date change; Oct 4 – HND-KOJ (Kagoshima, Kyushu) Caught the monorail to get to Domestic terminal 2. If you show your passport, your international plane ticket and your connecting domestic ticket, the monorail is free! 1 hr 20 min later, landed at Kagoshima Airport. Raining cats and dogs. Shuttle bus to town approximately 1250-yen, approx. 40-minutes. Town was pretty good – rain stopped; Joyfull Restaurant and had a snack; Oct 5 – Kagoshima 7 a.m. breakfast at the Toyoko Inn. Got maps from the tourist center and bought me a 500-yen all-day ON/OFF bus pass. I made a mistake. Had I paid 600-yen, I could have a 1-day pass for all the different buses and also the trams; I ignored several stops and got off at Shiroyama lookout which is something like looking at the city from Punchbowl! The next place I stopped was at Saigo’s Cave, a place he made his last stand before commiting seppuku at age 49; a quick lunch of some kind of tonkatsu-don. Then I visited the Segodon Taiga Drama Kan, some sort of museum with pictures and artifacts from the TV drama. Paid 480-yen a discounted rate because of my 1-day bus pass. I couldn’t take photos of the pictures of the actors nor their autographed stuffs; Oct 6 – Kagoshima Checked out of the Toyoko Inn and went HE-LE on to the bus station; 1250-yen airport shuttle; KOJ-ASJ approx. 50-min flight; Island Bus 1100-yen airport to Amami town; checked into Amami Sunplaza Hotel; BURA-BURA in the neighborhood.
