Amami folk singer
A folk singer from Amami, an Island in the Ryukyus, performing at a gathering of Ryukyuan people in Osaka in Summer 2007. I got his permission to record this and share it but I didn't get around to the latter until now. The Amami are partially descended from the orginal Jomon phenotype who populated Japan before the arrival of the Yamato Japanese from Korea, thereby making them distant relatives of the Emishi and Ainu.

Nihon Minkaen
The Nihon Minkaen - Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum
The Nihon Minkaen in Kawasaki City has on display some fine examples of traditional Japanese architecture dating back to the 17th century. There are 25 historical buildings from all over Japan most of which are farm houses. The project of relocating these traditional buildings was undertaken in 1965. There is also a traditional water mill complete with mortars and wooden pestles and a complete Kabuki stage which was built in 1857. There is a Shintõ shrine which was built in the 1860s, and a ferry mans hut which dates from 1925. There is also a gate of a samurai residence which was built in the middle of the 19th century and a traditional raised storehouse which was built in the late 19th century and brought here from the Amami archipelago in Kagoshima Prefecture.
The buildings are all in their original state having been moved intact and rebuilt on location using the same methods in which they were originally built.
Many of the buildings are either designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, Important Cultural Properties of Kanagawa Prefecture, or Important Cultural Properties of Kawasaki City.

2/2 The Mark of Beauty - Engawa veranda
First broadcast on Nov. 24, 2014.
The engawa is a distinctive feature of traditional domestic Japanese architecture, a long and narrow veranda, or deck, which runs along the outside of the lower story of the building. It is a space of nostalgia for the Japanese. In plush houses built in the early decades of the 20th century, the engawa was a place of beauty all around from the speckled light of garden trees to the breeze and dancing rainwater. In recent years, engawa cafes have emerged as natural gathering spaces. We discover the astonishing attractions of the engawa, a space that is neither inside nor out.

Alocasia and Cycads ( 不喰芋と蘇鉄 )
Explanation of the Expression Alocasia and Cycads Picture of Tanaka Isson.
Tanaka Isson ( 22 July 1908 - 11 September 1977 ) was the pseudonym of a Japanese Nihonga painter from the Showa period noted for his flower-and-bird paintings of the Amami Islands. His real name was Tanaka Takashi.
Isson was born in what is now Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, as the son of a local sculptor. Interested in art at an early age, he won his first award for a watercolor painting at the age of 7. In 1926, he enrolled in the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (the predecessor to the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music), where he specialized in Nihonga painting, but left after a few months without graduating due to his father's illness and lack of funds.
From 1938, he lived at various locations in Chiba prefecture, and although his future initially seemed promising, his isolation from the mainstream art circles meant that he had difficulty in establishing a name. He was forced to work at numerous odd jobs to stay alive, while attempting to paint on the side. In the years of World War II, he endured illness and poverty. It was only in 1947, in an exhibition sponsored by Kawabata Ryushi, that his name became known to the art world.
In 1958, at the age of 50, he decided to relocate to Amami Ōshima, where he found employment at a silk factory, earning just enough for a frugal life. He continued to paint, using the nature of Amami Oshima for inspiration, and his output through the 1960s and early 1970s was prolific.
Tanaka Isson died in 1977 of a heart attack at the age of 69. After his death, his life and the style of his works were compared with that of Paul Gauguin on the Japanese national television's Sunday Art Museum program, and in 2001, a memorial art museum was established in his honor near the airport on Amami Oshima.

Tokyo Imperial Palace
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tokyo Imperial Palace (皇居 Kōkyo; literally, Imperial Residence) is the main residence of the Emperor of Japan. It is a large park-like area located in the Chiyoda area of Tokyo close to Tokyo Station and contains several buildings including the main palace (Kyūden (宮殿?), the private residences of the imperial family, an archive, museum and administrative offices. It is built on the site of the old Edo castle. The total area including the gardens is 3.41 square kilometres (1.32 sq mi). During the height of the 1980s Japanese property bubble, the palace grounds were valued by some as more than the value of all the real estate in the state of California.
History
Edo castle
After the capitulation of the Shogunate and the Meiji Restoration, the inhabitants, including the Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu, were required to vacate the premises of the Edo Castle. Leaving Kyoto Imperial Palace, on 26 November 1868 the emperor arrived at Edo castle, made it to his new residence and renamed it to Tōkei Castle (東京城 Tōkei-jō). At this time Tōkyō had also been called Tōkei. He left for Kyōto again, and after coming back on 9 May 1869 it was renamed to Imperial Castle (皇城 Kōjō).
Previous fires already destroyed the Honmaru area containing the old donjon (which itself burned in the 1657 Meireki fire). On the night of 5 May 1873, a fire consumed the Nishinomaru Palace (formerly the shogun's residence), and the new imperial Palace Castle (宮城 Kyūjō) was constructed on the site in 1888.
A non-profit Rebuilding Edo-jo Association (NPO江戸城再建) was founded in 2004 with the aim of a historically correct reconstruction of at least the main donjon. In March 2013 Naotaka Kotake, head of the group, said that The capital city needs a symbolic building, and that the group planned to collect donations and signatures on a petition in the hope of having the tower rebuilt. A reconstruction blueprint had been made based on old documents. The Imperial Household Agency had not indicated whether it would support the project.

Baku ( bə-KOO, BAH-koo; Azerbaijani: Bakı, IPA: [bɑˈcɯ]) is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, as well as the largest city on the Caspian Sea and of the Caucasus region. Baku is located 28 metres (92 ft) below sea level, which makes it the lowest lying national capital in the world and also the largest city in the world located below sea level. It is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, alongside the Bay of Baku. At the beginning of 2009, Baku's urban population was estimated at just over two million people. Officially, about 25 percent of all inhabitants of the country live in Baku's metropolitan area. Baku is the sole metropolis in Azerbaijan.
Baku is divided into twelve administrative Baku's (raions) and 48 townships. Among these are the townships on the islands of the Baku Archipelago, and the town of Oil Rocks built on stilts in the Caspian Sea, 60 kilometres (37 miles) away from Baku. The Inner City of Baku, along with the Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. According to the Lonely Planet's ranking, Baku is also among the world's top ten destinations for urban nightlife. The city is the scientific, cultural, and industrial center of Azerbaijan. Many sizeable Azerbaijani institutions have their headquarters there. The Baku International Sea Trade Port is capable of handling two million tons of general and dry bulk cargoes per year.
