GORGE and GODS - Takachiho, Miyazaki
Takachiho is a town in northern Miyazaki. One of the things that makes Takachiho famous is its gorge. The sheer cliffs, lined with waterfalls, lead into beautiful turquoise waters. The cliffs are made of slow forming volcanic basalt columns. I guess thanks goes to Mount Aso for this one.
Takachiho is also centred around some Japanese myths. Takachiho is home to the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu. Amano Iwato Shrine is dedicated to the cave that Amaterasu hid in to avoid her brother. The path near the shrine leads down to Amano Yasukawara. This is the cave where the gods and goddesses met to discuss their strategy of luring Amaterasu out of hiding. There is another shrine here and thousands of stacked rocks around it. (I felt this was a little too complicated to explain in the video especially since I'm not well versed in Japanese mythology. Though this trip has sparked an interest.)
I really loved my little day trip to Takachiho. This was on my list as soon as I found out where I'd be living in Japan. It also made me want to explore more of Miyazaki Prefecture so hopefully I get back there soon.
Much love and happy travels

Takachiho Shrine, Miyazaki 宮崎 高千穂神社
Takachiho Shrine, worshiped by the residents of Takachiho, was established 1900 years ago. It enshrines a guardian and agricultural God, a God of match making, and a God for the expelling of evil spirits.

Takachiho is the area of one of the best known legends of Japanese mythology. In the story, Amaterasu, the the goddess of the sun in Shinto, got so outraged by her brother's cruel pranks that she hid herself in a cave, refusing to come out and depriving the world of her life-giving light.
All of the other gods and goddesses gathered to persuade her out. They tried everything they could think of to no effect until one goddess performed an outrageously ribald dance that caused the other gods to roar with laughter. Amaterasu left the cave to see what all the fun was about, and in doing so she Returned her light to the world.
About ten kilometers outside of central Takachiho, Amano Iwato Shrine (Amano Iwato Jinja) was built close to the cave where Amaterasu is said to have hid herself away. The shrine's main buildings are placeed on the Opposite side of the Iwato River from the cave.
Amano Iwato Shrine
Hours: Always open
Closed: No closing days
Admission: Free
The cave cannot be approached, however, there is an observation deck behind the shrine's main building from where you can see the cave across the river. To access the deck, you need to inquire at the shrine entrance, and a priest will give you about 20minutes guided tour in Japanese.
Guide hours 8:30-16:30
Free of charge
A short walk down the road from Amano Iwato Shrine is a path that leads down to the river below. You will see neat little piles of stones stacked along the river by previous visitors to mark their pilgrimage to this power spot after a few minutes on this path. Farther along, the stacks become more numerous until you are surrounded by literally thousands of them as far as you can see.
Eventually the path leads you to a simple shrine inside a cave known as Amano Yasukawara. This is said to be the cave where the gods and goddesses met to discuss their strategy of persuading Amaterasu out of hiding. The natural beauty of the cave and river lined by many stacks of stones make Amano Yasukawara a place not to miss.

Miyazaki's Takachiho, a place of Beauty and Mythology
Jen and I decided to go to Takachiho in the neighboring prefecture of Miyazaki. Takachiho-machi, or Takachiho Town, is a place with a lot of beauty such as the gorge which you can row a boat through, the path along the gorge all the way to the Takacho Shrine, the peak of the mountain which is the most beautiful in fall and winter, as well as all Amanoiwato shrine where the Goddess of Sun, Amaterasu, hid herself throwing the world into darkness. She hid herself after being upset by her brother, Susano, the God of the Sea and Storms.
The story is that Amaterasu hid herself in the cave after her brother, Susano, threw a fit by destroying her rice fields and killing one of her attendants. Amaterasu would not come out of the cave so the other gods gathered to find a way to get her out. The gods decided to have a party outside the cave. They hung a mirror right outside the cave entrance and then the God of Merriment began to dance, a particularly lude dance, which made all the other gods truly laugh. This dance later became known as 'Kagura'. So when Amaterasu heard the laughter, she decided to peak outside and when she did she saw her own beautiful reflection and stared for a awhile. While she stared at her own reflection, another god pulled her out of the cave and they closed it off so that she could not hide again. The mirror the gods used later became one of the three Regalia of Japan, along with the sword that Amaterasu's brother, Susano, gave to Amaterasu in order to reconcile after their fight when he for which he was kind out of the heavens for.
Here is a link to the full story of Amaterasu:
There are many interesting things in Takachiho such as Amanoiwato, the cave Amaterasu hid in, as well as the many shrines in the town that are connected to the story, and even things not connected to Amaterasu, such as the gorge and the fresh water aquarium. Takachiho also has a special ice cream flavor called 'hyuga natsu'. Hyuga (or Hinata)
is what Miyazaki Prefecture used to be called before the Meiji Restoration and 'natsu' means summer. The ice cream is a very soft yellow color and tastes like mangos, which Miyazaki is famous for.
If you are ever in Kyushu and near Miyazaki, please take the time to spend a day in Takachiho. It is truly a beautiful place.

Miyazaki Takachiho Yokagura - Totori no Mai
This dance is about Japanese mythology.
Yokagura is said to have originated from the time when the goddess Amanouzume performed an interesting dance as a part to lure the sun goddess Amaterasu from the cave in which she enclosed herself offended by the misdeeds of Susanoo, her younger brother.

【★002★Miyazaki Takachiho Amano Iwato Shrine】

Takachiho Shrine Dance
One of the parts of a 33 part dance honoring the town.
The History of the Iwato Yama
...told by the drunkest man in Kyoto.
Basically, the sun goddess Amaterasu hid herself in a cave (called the Ama-no-Iwato found in Ise, Mie prefecture) after her brother the god of storms Susanoo ticked her off. Since she's the goddess of the sun, the world was left without light. Because of Amaterasu's importance to the world (aka to bring out the sun) the other gods held a banquet and tried creating a number of things to get her to come out. Amaterasu finally came out when curiosity got the best of her while the goddess of dawn and revelry Ame-no-Uzume did a very promiscuous (but funny to the other gods) dance.
There are many different interpretations of this story (as well as a lot of people using the wonderful cut and paste function), so I may be wrong; if anyone wants to correct me, please post a comment and I will change the description of this clip.
Thanks for watching!
