A short trip to the famous “Village market of the jungle Khoai on Saturday” (শনিবারের খোয়াই বনের অন্য হাট) (Khoai trip/tour) (Bolpur – Shantiniketan trip/tour) (Sonajhuri jungle trip/tour):

Are you born & brought up in the “Jungle of Concrete”? Does the “Skyscrapers”, “Dark Pollution”, “Dense Crowd”, “Fast lifestyle” sometimes irritate you? Are you really tired of your daily packed up schedule? We people are always very much busy with our daily city life.

So if you want to get relaxation or peace of mind in a short time, you can easily go to the “Sonajhuri Jungle (Jungle of Acacia auriculiformis)”. There is no one who didn’t hear the name “Shantiniketan” (Bolpur, West Bengal, India). It is the ‘Abode of Peace’ of “Great Rabindranath Tagore”. ”Sonajhuri Jungle” is just 3 kilometers away from “Shantiniketan”.

Here you can see the golden leaves ‘Sonajhuri (Acacia auriculiformis)‘, ‘Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and the clean & green natural beauty along with the ‘Santhali Settlements (largest tribes in India in terms of population)’. The most pleasant things are the ‘Santhali’ traditional handmade arts, handicrafts & cloths. Their culture will make you feel the true jungle lives.

Here you can find beautiful spot “Khoai – A geological formation like natural canyon made up of laterite soil rich in iron oxide often in the shapes of tiny hills”. The famous “Khoai er Haat (A Village Market of Khoai)” namely “Shonibarer Khoai Boner Onno Haat (Different Village Market at Khoai Jungle on Saturday)” is available only on Saturday (3pm to 6pm). Various types of ‘Handicrafts’, ‘Handmade Ornaments’, ‘Batik print cloths’, ‘Bandhani cloths’, ‘Decorative items for your sweet home’ and many more.

Now your journey is almost at the end. Just enrich yourself with the famous and soulful ‘Baul Songs’ in the ‘Haat’.

How to go (from Kolkata, West Bengal):

By train:

1. Ganadevta Express (13017) (Daily) from Howrah (HWH) at 6.05am. Reaches Bolpur-Shantiniketan (BHP) at 9.14am.

2. Shantiniketan Superfast Express (12337) (Daily) from HWH at 10.10am. Reaches BHP at 12.25pm.

3. Rampurhat Superfast (Shahid) Express (12347) (Daily) from HWH at 11.55am. Reaches BHP at 2.13pm.

4. Balurghat (Tebhaga) Express (13161) (Daily except Saturday) from Kolkata (KOAA) at 12.55pm. Reaches BHP at 3.20pm.

5. Shatabdi Express (12041) (Daily except Saunday) from HWH at 2.15pm. Reaches BHP at 4.04pm.

There are many more trains for BHP are available everyday from Howrah, Sealdah and Kolkata station. Take rikshaw, toto or auto from Bolpur station. Only 5-6 kms to go more.

By Bus:

Please try to avoid bus service to go to Bolpur. Because there are only one or two buses available from Kolkata to Bolpur.

By car:

Shortest route: Kolkata-Vidyasagar Bridge-Dankuni-NH-2-Palsit-Shaktigarh-Burdwan Bypass-Burdwan Bypass (Nawab Haat More)-Talit-Guskara-Bolpur-“Shonibarer Khoai Boner Onno Haat”

Approximate distance from Kolkata: 170 kilometers

Where to stay: You will find so many types (as per pricing) of hotels, lodges, guest houses and resorts at Shantiniketan. Please contact them for availability of room before your visit. It is also possible to complete your same day short tour.

Suitable time to visit: Any season. Please remember the ‘Haat’ is only on each Saturday. Weekly holidays of The Visva Bharati University (Shantiniketan) (founded by Rabindranath Tagore) are Wednesday & Thursday.

BAUL SANTINIKETAN AMAR KUTIR

small footage made in West Bengal's rural area, to be more precise in Amar Kutir a place located about 15 km from Santiniketan, it's a small cooperative unit where locals produce handicrafts made of leather, bamboo, cotton... founded by Sushen Mukherjee in the Birbhum district of west Bengal, not far from the famous Tagore's Santiniketan university its original purpose was to give work to young independence fugitives during the time of India's independece fight, in this place many baul musicians usually play their melodious music and they also travel to other communities and districts, wandering around the area practicing their spiritual community with God.
