Amaravathi Museum

The Archaeological Museum at Amaravati houses mainly Buddhist relics. The antiquities found here include collections from Buddhist sites in Andhra Pradesh which belong to the period between 3rd century BC to 12th century AD. It contains panels, chakras and caskets containing relics, broken railings and sculptures etc. The exhibits are arranged in different galleries.

Amaravati (Lat. 160 34' N, Long. 800 17'E) is situated on the right bank of the river Krishna at a distance of 35 km north of the railway station of Guntur town. It is also a center of pilgrimage, known as Amareswaram.

The Amaravati school of art occupies a pre-eminent position in the history of Indian Art. With its beginning in 3rd century BC the Amaravati unfolds its chapters through the galaxy of sculptural wealth that once adorned the Mahachaitya the majestic monument of the Buddhists situated here with its history extending over a period of a millennium and a half.

Vijaywada is the second largest city of the state of Andhra Prades located on the banks of river Krishna. River Krishna is as a holy river and it is considered as auspicious to take bath in river Krishna. Before visiting Kanakadurga temple, we took a holy bath in Krishna River. Kanakadurga temple is the most popular temple in Vijaywada. It is a very ancient temple built on top of Indra kiladri hill on the bank of River Krishna. There are several busses run by the temple to carry devotees from the bottom of the hill to the temple on the top all free of cost.

Mogulrajpuram caves (Vijaywada) is located at the heart of the city surrounded by roads and buildings from all sides. Being located by the side of a main road it is easily accessible by vehicles. The place is maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. There is no ticket; the entry is free to this place.

Amaravati is a small town about 50 kms from Vijaywada in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. Amaravati is famous for the temple of Lord Amareswar and the Buddhist monuments. Amareswar temple is the most famous temple in Amaravati. Amaravati is about 50 Kms from Vijaywada. From Vijaywada we went to Amaravati by bus which took us about 2 hours. Amareswar temple is very close to Amaravati bus stop (about one Km). The temple is located by the side of river Krishna. It is one of the five most popular Shiva temples in Andhra Pradesh. The area of the temple campus is very large. While the main temple of Lord Amareswar is located at the center there are many more temple located at all four sides

Undavali Caves is located about 10 kms from Vijaywada on the way from Vijaywada to Amaravati. These caves are constructed by the side of a hill. As per the archeological department, the caves were 1500 years old. Those were constructed during 6th and 7th century. The original caves were Buddhist caves which were used for resting. Later the caves were modified by Hindus.

Dhyana Buddha Statue - Stupa - Amaravati Andra Pradesh India

The Dhyana Buddha statue is a statue of a Buddha in Amaravathi, India.

The recorded history of Amaravati and nearby Dharanikota dates to 5th century BCE. It was the capital of Satavahanas who ruled from 3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE who are much favor in Buddhism expanded it. The most important historical monument in Amaravathi town is the Mahachaitya

It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India which maintains a site museum known as an old museum.

The Dhyana Buddha statue of 125 ft (38 m) is located at Amaravati. It is situated on the banks of Krishna river in 4.5 acres (1.8 ha) with eight pillars on a Lotus pandal.

The statue has a museum inside it, which consists of sculptures depicting Buddhist significance. The eight pillars signify path for salvation followed by Buddha, four zones for noble truths and five Ayaka pillars for stages of life.

APTDC is going to complete the Theme Park in front of the statue which is said to be opened for Public in 2018.
