The shrine forms an important part of Hinduism, and is considered to be one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. The cave is surrounded by snowy mountains. The cave itself is covered with snow most of the year except for a short period of time in summer when it is open for pilgrims. Amarnath Yatra in the Kashmir Himalaya of India

The annual Amarnath Yatra is one of the most popular Hindu pilgrimages of India. One of the most sacred and arguably one of the most arduous pilgrimages to the snow- clad cave shrine of Lord Shiva. Each year, nearly six lakh pilgrims undertake this difficult yatra to worship the shivlinga of ice at Amarnath, situated at an altitude of 3,880 meters. The Amarnath shrine is situated in the northern Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir.

Access to the holy cave is generally open from mid July to early August and concludes around the festival of Raksha Bandhan, towards the end of the Hindu calendar month of shravan.

The cave shrine of Amarnath can be accessed only during the months of July and August, as only by then the pure white ice-mound of the Shivalinga is formed. Rising to acquire its fullest height on a full moon night. It is believed that water from the Ramkund Lake situated above the cave, falls drop by drop on the holy Shiva Lingam.

The yatra or journey to the holy cave shrine has thre traditional routes Pahalgam, Baltal and Chandanwari. However Baltal is the most popular of the three because of its considerably shorter distance.

The beginning of the annual pilgrimage is marked by the Pratham puja to invoke the blessings of Lord Shiva.

Legend has it that here on Shravaan day; Lord Shiva narrated 'Amar Katha' or the secrets of the cosmos to his consort, Goddess Parvati. Though Parvati fell asleep during the discourse, two pigeons heard Lord Shiva's story and attained immortality. Since then the holy place came to be known as Amarnath meaning the eternal god, and every year on the full moon day of Shravaan, a pair of pigeons can be seen inside the cave.

The State Road Transport Corporation and Private Transport Operators provide regular services from Jammu to Pahalgam and Baltal. Privately hired taxis are also available.

Adequate measures are taken to make the trek easier. And tight security arrangements are set up to keep pilgrims safe during the yatra.

Pilgrims walk along the pilgrim track and assist each other along the tougher parts of the trek. Kashmiri Bakarwals and their ponies walk along with the Hindu pilgrims, carrying their luggage.

The route passes through Pahalagam - Chandanwari - Pissu Top – Sheshnag and Panchtarni before finally reaching the holy cave.

Pahalgam is located on the banks of the Lidder River, at a distance of 315 kms from Jammu and can be accessed by taxis or buses. While passing through this path, one can witness some of the most fascinating valleys with an abundance of natural beauty, steep mountain ranges and snow-capped mountain peaks.

As the yatra begins pilgims make their first halt at Chandanwari. Situated 16 kms from Pahalgam, Chandanwari, with the Lidder River flowing past, rising mountains and deodar forests, is located at an altitude of around 2,895 meters above sea level and is the point from where the trek starts.

Before proceeding towards Pissu-Top one has to spend a night at this camp. Free community kitchens are set up at every camp, which provide langars (Free meals) for the pilgrims during the yatra.

The journey from Chandanwari towards Sheshnag starts early in the morning. After walking a few kilometers from Chandanwari one comes across the big challenge of Pissu-Top. The hill is steep and the climb - long.

Pilgrims gather at the Chandanwari base camp to begin the journey. Some pilgrims hire a pony to make their trek easier.

Climbing Pissu-Top one can enjoy the scenic beauty of the Himalayas, green meadows with wild Geraniums, buttercups and other Himalayas flowers growing here in abundance, while a large ‘Om’ symbol adorns one of its slopes.

Sheshnag lake in the Kashmir Himalaya in India

Sheshnag Lake is an alpine high altitude oligotrophic lake situated at the track leading to Amarnath cave 23 kilometers from Pahalgam in Anantnag district of Kashmir valley in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir at an elevation of 3590 meters. It has a maximum length of 1.1 kilometers and maximum width of 0.7 kilometers.

According to the Hindu mythology Sheshnag means the king of snakes and the lake was dug by Sheshnag himself. It is believed by the Hindus that Sheshnag stays in this Lake even today. It is one of the most ancient places of pilgrimage for the Hindus, as it lies on the track of Amarnath cave.

Sheshnag Lake is home to many types of fishes among of which is the brown trout. It freezes during winter, and is inaccessible during this season due to heavy snowfall. It is surrounded by green lush meadows and mountains covered by snow. Sheshnag Lake is one of the famous tourist destination in Kashmir Valley. It is mostly fed by melting of snow and streams coming down from mountain tops. It drains out through a stream which joins Lidder River at Pahalgam.

The cave itself is covered with snow most of the year except for a short period of time in summer when it is open for pilgrims. Thousands of Hindu devotees make an annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave on challenging mountainous terrain to see an ice stalagmite formed inside the cave.

Inside the 40 m (130 ft) high Amarnath cave, the stalagmite is formed due to freezing of water drops that fall from the roof of the cave on to the floor and grows up vertically from the cave floor. It is considered to be a Shiva Linga by Hindus. The Cave waxes during May to August, as snow melts in the Himalayas above the cave and the resultant water seeps into the rocks that form the cave and gradually wanes thereafter. As per the religious beliefs, it has been claimed that the lingam grows and shrinks with the phases of the moon reaching its height during the summer festival, although there is no scientific evidence for this belief.

According to a Hindu legend, this is the cave where Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his divine consort, Parvati. Two other ice formations represent Parvati and Shiva's son, Ganesha.

The main purpose of the annual pilgrimage to the cave is worship of the ice stalagmite Lingam.

Pahalgam is a town and a notified area committee in Anantnag district in India's northernmost state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a popular tourist destination, and every year, many tourists visit Pahalgam. This world famous hill station is 45 km. from the District Head Quarter at Anantnag and located on the banks of river Lidder at an altitude of 7200 ft. from sea level. Pahalgam is one among the five tehsils of Anantnag district and tehsil head quarters are located in the main town of Pahalgam. It was once a tourist attraction and a favourite place for shooting of Bollywood films, and is still a health resort. Besides tourist huts, several hotels in private sector have come up here and these hotels provide modern facilities to their guests. A number of treks in this region also begin from Pahalgam, as the 35 km trail traverses through pinewoods to the spectacular Kolahoi Glacier.

The road from Pahalgam to Chandanwari is on fairly flat terrain and can be undertaken by car. From Chandanwari onwards the track becomes much steeper, and is accessible on foot or by pony. About 11 km from Chandanwari is the mountain lake of Sheshnag (3,574 m), after which, 13 km away is the last stop, Panchtarni. The Amarnath cave is 6 km away from there. During the month of Sawan, an ice stalagmite forms a natural Shivling in the Amarnath cave.

Dedicated to the god Shiva, the shrine is said to be over 5,000 years old. The shrine forms an important part of Hinduism. This lingam is said to grow and shrink with the phases of the moon, reaching its height during the summer festival. According to Hindu mythology, this is the cave where Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his divine consort Parvati. Two other ice formations represent Parvati and Shiva's son, Ganesha.

Amarnath cave is a famous shrine in Hinduism located in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is dedicated to Shiva. The cave is situated at an altitude of 3,888 m (12,756 ft), about 141 km (88 mi) from Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir and reached through Pahalgam town. The shrine forms an important part of Hinduism, and is considered to be one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. The cave is surrounded by snowy mountains. The cave itself is covered with snow most time of the year except for a short period of time in summer when it is open for pilgrims. An annual pilgrimage is made to the Amarnath cave by lakhs (hundreds of thousands) of Hindu devotees on challenging mountainous terrain to see an ice stalagmite formed inside the cave. The Amarnath cave has been a place of worship since times immemorial. There are references to one Aryaraja (32BCE-17CE) who used to worship a lingam formed of ice in Kashmir. The book Rajatarangini refers to Amareshwara or Amarnath. It is believed that Queen Suryamathi in the 11th century AD gifted trishuls, banalingas and other sacred emblems to this temple. Rajavalipataka, begun by Prjayabhatta has detailed references to the pilgrimage to Amarnath Cave. Other than this, there are further references to this pilgrimage in many other ancient texts.

The temple is a popular yatra destination for some Hindus. In 2011 it received about 634,000 persons, the highest recorded number for the site. The number was 622,000 in 2012. Pilgrims visit the holy site during the 45-day season around the festival of Shravani Mela in July--August, coinciding with the Hindu holy month of Shraavana. The Amarnath Yatra is organised every year by the J &K Govt. during the month of sharavan (July and August); the dates however, vary every year looking at the weather conditions and according to Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) in the month of Sharavan (Vikrama Samwat). Yatra to Baba Amarnath Holy Cave for which one has to trek a height of about 14,500 ft is full of thrill and joy .The feeling of divine which is always beneath ones' heart , burst out and one realises 'Moksha' as one attends the Cave and perform the prayer before the Shivlinga . Surrounded by beautiful valleys, mountains , one will always feel His presence on the paradise of the earth, the memory of which hardly vanishes with time a journey which will rediscover the nature and its love which is always inside but one has never felt.

Devotees travel on foot, either from Srinagar or from Pahalgam.[3] The latter journey takes approximately 5 days. The State Road Transport Corporation and Private Transport Operators provide the regular services from Jammu to Pahalgam and Baltal. Also privately hired taxis are available from Jammu. The shorter northern route is just about 16 km long, but has a very steep gradient and is quite difficult to climb. It starts from Baltal and passes through Domial, Barari, and Sangam to reach the cave. The northern route is along the Amarnath valley and all along the route one can see the river Amaravathy (It is more like a tributary of Chenab) which originates from Amarnath Glacier. En route to the cave, various non-profit organizations set up food supply and resting tents called pandals which are available for free to the pilgrims. Near the shrine, hundreds of tents which are erected by locals can be hired for a night's stay. Helicopter services from base camp to Panjtarni (6 km from the cave) are also available from various private operators.

Thousands of Hindu devotees make an annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave on challenging mountainous terrain to see an ice stalagmite formed inside the cave.

Inside the 40 m (130 ft) high Amarnath cave, the stalagmite is formed due to freezing of water drops that fall from the roof of the cave on to the floor and grows up vertically from the cave floor. It is considered to be a Shiva Linga by Hindus. The Cave waxes during May to August, as snow melts in the Himalayas above the cave and the resultant water seeps into the rocks that form the cave and gradually wanes thereafter. As per the religious beliefs, it has been claimed that the lingam grows and shrinks with the phases of the moon reaching its height during the summer festival, although there is no scientific evidence for this belief.

According to a Hindu legend, this is the cave where Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his divine consort, Parvati. Two other ice formations represent Parvati and Shiva's son, Ganesha.

The main purpose of the annual pilgrimage to the cave is worship of the ice stalagmite Lingam.

When And Where Is The Yatra Held?

The Amarnath Cave is located in the Himalayas in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, approximately 140km from the capital Srinagar. The annual yatra (journey) takes place in the Shravan month according to the Hindu calendar, which falls somewhere in June-August. Since the cave and its surrounding areas remain covered in snow most of the year, this is the only time when devotees can access the shrine – hence the massive crowds that flock here for the yatra.
It is said that the ice Lingam that forms in the cave shrinks and grows as per the changes in the lunar cycle. In 2017, the Amarnath Yatra is from June 29 to August 7. Usually, the yatra spans a period of 45 days.

The Amarnath Yatra Route
At present, there are two routes that pilgrims can take to reach the Amarnath Cave. But whichever you choose, remember that the trek will take you to a height of more than 14,000 feet. Hence, being physically fit and mentally prepared for the journey is a must.

Pahalgam Route: Pahalgam is the traditional route for the yatra, and it comprises a trek of 36-48 km. You can complete this on foot or choose to ride on a pony, and the journey usually takes 3-5 days one way. Although this is the wider route of the two, it can get crowded with ponies, palanquins (dolis), and devotees since it is still preferred by most people.

For this route, you will travel through Chandanwari, which is the checkpoint where yatris need to furnish their permits and documents. Pissu Top, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni are the other places on the way.
