6. Edinburgh Castle
If you ever look at the Edinburgh skyline, you probably have noticed the castle on the hill behind Old Town. The castle is one of Edinburgh's most iconic features. It’s been there since the 12th century, with construction continued well into the 21st century. Edinburgh Castle is home to the Scottish crown jewels, but also to hidden tunnels and ghosts. Talk of restless spirits surround the castle, much of them speculated to be the prisoners that once lived in the dungeons. One story involves the soul of a piper who explored the castle’s tunnels hundreds of years ago and vanished without a trace. Another tells of a headless drummer who has frequented the halls since the 1650 attack on the castle by Oliver Cromwell. The supposed hauntings don’t seem to deter tourists, though, since 2 million people visit the castle every year.
5. Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel
The Canadian Pacific Railway opened the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, the majestic structure looking over a valley in the Rocky Mountain mountain range. The hotel opened in 1888, making it over 130 years old. It features 764 guest rooms, highly rated restaurants, and hosts lots of weddings. One of the famous scary stories associated with the hotel is that of The Bride. It was the late 1920s and a young couple were about to be married. On the wedding day, the bride accidentally tripped down the hotel’s marble stairs. Since then, various guests and employees alike alleged seeing a veiled body walk down the steps or seeing a wedding dress dancing on its own in the ballroom.
4. The Bhanghar Fort, India
Due to the terrifying legend of this fort, visitors are forbidden from staying on the premises overnight – how’s that for creepy? Locals are so afraid of the fort that the city nearby developed outside the fort's limits so as not to disturb the ghosts. Many believe a scorned wizard placed a curse on Bhanghar after a girl he fell in love with didn’t return his affection. Now, both the wizard and the girl’s souls haunt the place. Several fatalities that happened here were attributed to the paranormal activity. The most well-known incident was a group of visitors who, against the warnings, entered the fort at night and came across a boy sitting in one of the rooms. Little detail was revealed as to what happened to them, but the level of secrecy leaves you to draw your own conclusions.
3. The Tower of London
The Tower of London sits along the River Thames in Central London. It has existed since 1078 and was then rebuilt in 1285. It just makes sense that the older something is, the more ghosts probably live there. We can make an individual list of the haunting stories tied to the Tower of London because it has so many. From Henry the VI to Lady Jane Grey, to nameless ghosts seen by many visitors, it’s easy to count this landmark among one of the most haunted places in the world. Anne Boleyn is one of the favorites of the spirits wandering the tower. Henry VIII ordered Boleyn's beheading in 1536 on account of treason. So now, legend states her headless ghost walks around the White Tower with her head tucked under her arm. This apparition has been seen by so many visitors, that it’s almost lost its shock value and is considered a regular occurrence.
2. Eastern State Penitentiary, Pennsylvania
Rated one of the most haunted places in the United States, Eastern State Penitentiary has been the focus of documentaries, ghost hunting expeditions and private ghost investigations for years. Located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, the prison was used between 1829 to 1971. One of its most famous inmates was Al Capone, who served time in 1929. After it was no longer used as a prison, it was named a US National Historic Landmark and converted into a museum. The prison has a long 142-year history of murder, torture, suicide, and disease, which is the stuff of a great ghost story. Visitors of the prison recall tales of echoing voices and scream from within the cells, seeing shadowy silhouettes in the dark halls, and the sounds of footsteps that seem to approach and then stop in thin air.

A real estate investor in Philadelphia is lucky to be alive after finding multiple booby traps in an abandoned home while on a viewing. Ekrem Uysaler discovered a large, swinging knife duct-taped to a crutch, activated by a tripwire. He also found a pile of broken glass on the stairs, as well as a floor board with more than a dozen spikes sticking out of it. “I have never seen anything like this before,” said Uysaler.

La Plata, MO, in Northern Missouri, is located on BNSF Railway's Marceline Subdivision at milepost 312.7, part of their Southern Transcon, the former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) mainline between Chicago and Los Angeles.
Amtrak’s Southwest Chief passenger train stops here twice a day; the eastbound train #4 in the morning and the westbound train #3 in the evening.
The typical BNSF freight train volume is between 50 and 70 trains per 24 hours. There are 2 cameras available.
There is an ATCS layout available, as well as a radio feed for the western part of the BNSF Marceline Sub, listening to AAR road channel 30, 160.560 (also includes Norfolk Southern's Kansas City District, on road channel 22, 160.440):

9 - Blast from the past…
Bokor Hill Station, a place that would make the perfect for a horror movie, is empty and void of any movement whatsoever. This small city located in Cambodia was originally built as a getaway for French colonists, where they could take a bit of a vacation and escape life and the heat as they knew it. There were hotels, buildings, villas and even a church. During construction, 900 lives were lost, so many do believe the area to be haunted. It was first abandoned in the 1940’s due to fighting that broke out in the area. It was reopened in 1962 and housed hotels and a casino, but that too was left behind in 1972 when the area was taken over by the Khmer Rouge. There are plans in place to recreate the city with a budget of $1 billion proposed, but it hasn’t begun as yet.
8 - Give up the ghost…
Designed by John Haviland, Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary is a must-see for any ghost hunter! This prison was functioning from 1829 until 1971 and held notorious prisoners such as Al Capone and Willie Sutton. It’s often joked that this prison was more luxurious than the White House, as each cell had central heating, a toilet that flushed, running water, their own exercise yard and a skylight. For this design, Haviland received $100! The creators of this prison had a vision that with the time allowed for introspection for the prisoners, it would lead the men to penitence and reformation.
7 - Weather related…
Dhanushkodi is a few miles from Sri Lanka, on Pamban Island in India and this particular area is very susceptible to cyclones. It was a cyclone that took place in 1964 that led to people evacuating Dhanushkodi, where it has been left to nature ever since.
6 - Long forgotten…
Chaitén didn’t always look like this. It used to be the capital of Palena Province in Los Lagos Regio, Chili… that was until a volcanic eruption destroyed the area in 2008 – the first eruption in 9,000-years! Then literally a few days after that, flooding further destroyed the already traumatized area. There was talk of rebuilding the town in 2009, but nothing has ever been done.
5 - Doomed from the get go…
The Satsop Nuclear Power Plant has been called a doozy, and that’s because from the onset there were problems. Costs were running way over budget and from thinking they would be spending around $4 billion on the 5 power plants, they were stuck with a bill for $24 billion, and they weren’t even finished yet! Construction was put on hold and eventually only one of the 5 was in operation, the WNP-2. The cooling tower is now home to the Satsop Business Park, and the whole area makes a great backdrop for movies, including “Transformers: Age of Extinction.”
4 - Lest we forget…
Originally built as coastal defense, Red Sands Sea Forts in Sealand, United Kingdom was also known as Maunsell Forts. Despite being empty and rather creepy now, there was talk of converting them into luxury hotels back in 2015. It’s estimated that it will cost $61 million to do the conversion, so if this is something you’d like to attempt – we say GO FOR IT!
3 - It’s a secret…
Skrunda-1 used to be a secret city, built for Soviet scientists. At one stage there were roughly 5,000 people living there, and nobody knew they were there! They had a radar station, plus all the regular amenities any normal city would have. This isn’t the only secret city out there, and it’s only a matter of time before we discover more!
2 - Home is where the heart is…
And the heart and soul have left this lonely home. Seeing these empty, neglected homes is enough to get your imagination running wild, with loads of questions: “Who lived there?” “Why did they leave?” “Is it haunted?” …. We’ll let you come up with your own answers!
