Buncrana Main Street, Inishowen Peninsula, Donegal
We have arrived at Buncrana on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way and also noted because this is 'Amazing Grace' country. We are out for a short exploratory walk along the main street. We have never visited before. Unfortuantely we do not have a lot of time. It would be great to come back here for longer as I know that we have missed a lot of things like churches beaches shoreline and sculptures.
Buncrana (/ˈbʌn.krænə/; Irish: Bun Cranncha, meaning foot of the (River) Crana) is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. It is beside Lough Swilly on the Inishowen peninsula, 23 kilometres (14 mi) northwest of Derry and 43 kilometres (27 mi) north of Letterkenny. In the 2016 census, the population was 6,785[1] making it the second most populous town in County Donegal, after Letterkenny, and the largest in Inishowen.
Buncrana is the historic home of the O'Doherty clan and originally developed around the defensive tower known as O'Doherty's Keep at the mouth of the River Crana. The town moved to its present location just south of the River Crana when George Vaughan built the main street in 1718.
The town was a major centre for the textile industry in County Donegal from the 19th century until the mid-2000s (decade).
Buncrana has strong connections to the O'Doherty clan, John Newtown, George Vaughan and Wolfe Tone.
When John Newton and his shipmates on The Greyhound found a haven in Lough Swilly on 8 April 1748 after a devastating Atlantic storm, he saw his survival as divine intervention, the answer to prayer. The refuge of the Swilly and Buncrana area laid a spiritual foundation for a reformed later life. In 1764 he became a Church of England clergyman and subsequently, as curate at Olney in Buckinghamshire, an anti-slavery activist and renowned hymnist famous for writing “Amazing Grace”.
We need to come back for a longer stay! So much to see!
In October 1905, Buncrana was the first town in County Donegal to receive electricity. It was generated at Swan Mill which continued to provide electricity for the town until September 1954 when Buncrana was brought under the ESB Rural Electrification Scheme

A short film made for Australian TV in 1988 featuring Mass at Fr Hegarty's Rock Buncrana and Inishowen Women Knitting, Gleneely Donegal.
[ Born in 1649, Fr. Hegarty was ordained in Dundalk in 1672 by Oliver Plunkett, Primate of Ireland, and was parish priest at Fahan from 1704 until the time of his death in 1711. He was killed by English Redcoats after they were informed by a Mass-goer, sympathetic to the British, that he was celebrating an unlawful ceremony. Fr. Hegarty managed to escape but while swimming in the Swilly he was convinced by the Redcoats to come ashore. However, when he stepped on dry land, they beheaded him. ]

An Independent New Voice
My name is Paul Ferguson. I am a candidate in the 2014 Donegal county council elections. I feel people do not have a voice. I want to bring about change so that people will step out of the shadows to fight in others corners. I see a Donegal that is failing from the top, we need to get back to basics, get back to the fundamental foundation of our society. I want to see Donegal as a powerhouse of Ireland and Ireland a powerhouse of Europe. Those who say it cannot be done are sitting back watching others achieve it. I have lived in Buncrana most of my life from 1985 -- 2007, then I immigrated to America, like 50,000 other Irish natives, I was undocumented. I spent 4 years in San Francisco, until 2011 when I was subsequently returned back to Ireland. Upon my return I received a ten-year bar and I left behind a six-week-old son. I am not allowed to visit my child, and I don't get to watch him grow up. I have been asked is my candidacy solely about getting to my son and the answer is NO. Dylan was instrumental in my decision to run for the county council. I have become aware of how many lost voices do not get heard from our communities. Through my experience I will bring a change for a new structure of communication to give our people a voice.

Buncrana, County Donegal
Buncrana is located at the mouth of the Crana River on the east bank of Lough Swilly. The town's Irish name means Foot of the River Crana and one of its delights is the walk under beech, maple and lime trees beside the brown waters of the River Crana. It is the principal town of the Inishowen Peninsula and has a wide range of shops, bars, hotels and restaurants. A new car ferry service, in operation June - September, connects Buncrana with Rathmullan on the opposite side of the Lough.
The town has a modern, fully equipped Leisure Centre complete with heated indoor swimming pool. Close to the Leisure Centre, along the seafront walk, a new kids play area with an all-weather surface, has recently been built and this superb free facility can provide hours of entertainment for children of all ages. For the golf enthusiast there is a small 9 hole course within the town boundary while the 18 hole course at Lisfannon is a short 5 min. drive along the coast. The Crana is probably one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in the northwest and day licences are available from the local angling clu
