Saving the #AmazonianManatee - #DallasWorldAquarium - #TheAmazonRescueCenter
The #Amazonian #Manatee is a #VulnerableSpecies found only in #SouthAmerica. The species is an #EndangeredSpecies due to the hunting of the species by the local people. The baby manatees are taken from their mothers and are sold on the #BlackMarket for meat or as a pet. Other than the illegality of hunting and selling endangered species, the primary problem with the hunting or taking the animal as a pet is the extremely important relationship a baby manatee has with its mother during the first two years of its life. In those first two years, the baby can only survive by the support of the mother's milk. If the baby is separated from its mother before 2 years, this is certain death for the baby mantee.
This is where our work comes in.
We rescue these baby manatees, that have been separated from their mother's, in some cases only one month old, and we rehabilitate the orphaned animal by hand feeding the baby with very specialized milk that is made from soy because the baby manatees, believe it or not, are lactose intolerant. This specialized milk is specifically made for marine aquatic mammals, and each package of this milk cost $80 US dollars, and the baby will finish a package of this milk in 2 or 3 days.
As you can imagine the operation is incredibly expensive, as the baby manatees must use this specialized soy milk for a minimum of two years before they can begin to eat aquatic plants as their primary diet, as they are herbivores, or vegetarians.
The Dallas World Aquarium and the Amazon Rescue Center in #Iquitos, #Peru, have rescued and released 26 manatees in the last 10 years.

You can support our work to save the Amazonian Manatee and many endangered species of the Amazon by visiting our website and making a donation that helps us feed our manatees, administer specialized medicines when necessary, and prepare our animals for release once their rehabilitation is complete. Every little bit helps and our animals thank you for your generosity.

Hand-feeding Amazon Manatees at a Rescue Center in Peru
During a trip to Peru in March, 2015, we visited the Iquitos Foundation's, Amazon Rescue Center, where they're doing important work to save several threatened and endangered species, including the Amazon Manatee. We were fortunate enough to hand-feed two of these remarkable animals, and the experience was unforgettable!
The Amazon Rescue Center is the result of a united effort among institutions like The Dallas World Aquarium, Dirección Regional de la Producción de Loreto, Instituto de Investigaciones de la Amazonía Peruana and Acobia-DWAzoo; with the purpose to develop rescue, recovering and release programs of aquatic mammals and wild fauna in Loreto, supported by an environmental education program, contributing to the conservation of these species and their ecosystems.
Exploring the Amazon in Iquitos Peru
Iquitos is the largest city in Peru's Amazonas. You can only reach it by plane or boat as far as I know. The Amazon rainforest is known for crazy animals, you can see a lot of them as food in the local markets and stands all over the city. The first stop in this video is Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm which you can reach by boat taxi. It is really more of a zoo although I believe the animals were rescued from the markets in Iquitos and there is a butterfly breeding facility inside it as the name says. Second is the Amazonian Manatee Rescue Center, this is reachable by city bus from downtown Iquitos. This is similar to the rescue operations they have in Florida, you can get up close and touch the baby manatees, they're very friendly and adorable. Lastly was a boat tour to a traditional village display, river swimming, a small up close and personal animal farm (parrots, anaconda, baby sloth, mata mata turtle, monkeys) and freshwater dolphin sighting. My guide was really informative and the day was packed with amazing things. Overall this was a really amazing trip, before I went I wasn't sure it was a needed addition as Peru already has so much to offer but it was definitely up there with Macchu Picchu.
The Amazon Rescue Center - Environmental Education
The Amazon Rescue Center, in Iquitos - Perú, it is a united effort among institutions like The Dallas World Aquarium Zoo, Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon, ACOBIA-DWAZoo and DIREPRO, we rescue, recovering and release orphan babies Amazonian manatees, but all these efforts would be worthless without Environmental Education.

Exploring Iquitos in Peru & the Amazon Jungle
Iquitos is a Peruvian town, hidden deep in the Amazon Jungle. It is the largest town in the world not connected by road. You either go by boat for days on end or fly in.
I flew in and spend a week exploring the area, when the waters where at their highest. My Amazon Jungle accommodation was about to go under water.
Iquitos is a different place to the rest of Peru. Full of rickshaws and majestic crumbling colonial building. In this video I show Belén with their houses on stilts, and I visit Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm and the Manatee Rescue Centre.
I went on a 3 day trip into the Amazon Jungle to a part called Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. Each day, we did a different activity, from visiting the local villages, attempting to hike in the sweltering jungle, feeding monkeys, seeing Sloths, trying exotic fruit and just relaxing in the hammocks.

Around Iquitos: rescue centers, Amazon Camp and indigenous community Boras
After visiting the town of Iquitos and a bit around, now I took a boat to go through the rivers Amazon, Nanay and Momon to visit other places around there, which includes the Rescue Center Paraíso del Amazonas, the Fundo Pedrito, the Amazon Camp and the indigenous community Boras.
Here I explained a bit more about the situation of the indigenous people in this area and why they are there.
Manatee rescue center Iquitos Peru- Sooo many animals to help save
I went to the mantee rescue center in iquitos peru. This place this place has many animals and the goal is to help save animals and teach locals about owning pets.
Many people will feed an animal a wrong diet and it will die, then they will get a new pet with a repeating cycle.
the entrance fees go into education and protecting the animal!

Iquitos, Peru is the largest city in the world that in inaccessible by road. You can only reach this city by plane or boat.
Iquitos is located in the Northeast of Peru, and is surrounded by the Amazon jungle on the banks of the Amazon river . A few minutes travel outside of the city, and you will find yourself far away from the man made world.
There are many adventures to be had in Iquitos. Boat trips, exotic cuisine, animal viewing and even piranha fishing. I just captured a few of the many amazing things you can do there.
The city is cheap for most tourists and relativly safe. It is always a large city with a good amount of hotels and a decent nightlife.
