MANAUS, BRAZIL - During my food trip to Brazil there was no place I wanted to visit more than the Amazon Rainforest. We flew to Manaus (if you look at a map, Manaus is directly in the heart center of the Amazon). The jungle, the unique dishes and fruits, and the people made it incredible.
Exotic fruit tasting - One of the things that you have to do when you’re in Brazil, especially in the Amazon is sample all the unique and indigenous fruits of the region, some that are only available there. We started with mari-mari, an amazing long pod fruit and have inga (ice cream bean fruit) and biribá - wild sugar apple. All the fruit - 10 BRL ($2.55)
Manaus is a pretty big city, especially for being in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest. They have a big market, full of fruits, vegetables and fish. We headed straight for some tucumã, a type of palm tree fruit that’s essential in the local diet.
Jenipapo - Along the way we also tried some jenipapo, a pretty unique fruit.
Tucumã sandwiches - Sandwich shop owners better take note! Tucumã sandwiches are a true Amazonian food and they are delicious. Along with the palm fruit they were paired with cheese and fried sweet banana. It’s a perfect breakfast and way to start the day in the Amazon. Price - about 10 BRL ($2.55) per sandwich
Tambaqui fish - Tambaqui is a fish from the Amazon that’s known for having ribs - seriously almost like pork ribs. We decided to get a fish to bring to the village since we weren’t sure what they’d have al the village.
Amazon village - We didn’t really have a plan, we were just going to find a boat driver and ask him to take us to a village and see if anyone could cool. So we got a boat, and our boat driver asked if they were home and if we could invite ourselves in. We arrived completely unplanned and unannounced and it turned out to be an outstanding learning experience and fun time with an amazing family in the Amazon.
Along with the food we brought, the family mixed up about 4 different exotic drinks - some of them known in the Western world as ingredients in trendy energy drinks - but here in the Amazon of Brazil they are consumed regularly.
It was such an awesome Brazilian Amazonian food meal with the family followed by a time of drumming and dancing, football, and finally a swim in the river. It was an extraordinary day in the Amazon of Brazil.

Amazon and Rio Negro Rivers Meeting of the Waters in Brazil
One highlight of a visit to the Manaus area is the Meeting of the Waters. The Rio Solimoes (Amazon River) and Rio Negro meet around 10 kilometers/6.2 miles from Manaus. Here the dark Rio Negro flows along the sandy upper Amazon. They don't mix but
flow alongside each other for nearly four miles. Many excursions from Manaus take sightseers to the meeting.
This can even be seen from space! Amazing...

Hello everybody. This is a video I am not particularly proud of. Looking back in time this is a thing I wouldn't do now and I regret doing. Both fishing the piranhas or annoying the anaconda were stupidities that violated animals. Now I am learning more about the rights of animals and trying to respect nature in every possible way. Amazon rainforest burning at record rate
Fires are raging at a record rate in Brazil's Amazon rainforest, and scientists warn that it could strike a devastating blow to the fight against climate change.
The fires are burning at the highest rate since the country's space research center, the National Institute for Space Research (known by the abbreviation INPE), began tracking them in 2013, the center said.
There have been 72,843 fires in Brazil this year, with more than half in the Amazon region, INPE said. That's more than an 80% increase compared with the same period last year.
The Amazon is often referred to as the planet's lungs, producing 20% of the oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere.
It is considered vital in slowing global warming, and it is home to uncountable species of fauna and flora. Roughly half the size of the United States, it is the largest rainforest on the planet.

The Amazon’s Boiling River Kills Anything That Enters
When Andrés Ruzo was a boy, his grandfather would tell him tales of a mythical city of gold deep in the heart of the Peruvian jungle. Though never believing the stories to be true, the legend of the lost city stuck with him into adulthood. Years later, as a geothermal scientist, Ruzo decided to investigate. To his surprise, he discovered an incredulous river deep in the Amazon, with water hot enough to kill a human. Historically a place of pilgrimage for shamans and sorcerers, the river now faces increasing threats from poachers, loggers and squatters. Now, Ruzo is working hard to protect it.

The Meeting of the Waters is the point at which the Rio Negro meets the Rio Solimões to form the Amazon River proper in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Due to differences in temperature, speed and density, the two rivers' differently colored waters don't mix immediately, but flow side by side for several miles.

BRAZIL: REMOTE TRIBE THREATENED BY AMAZON FOREST FIRES

Fires which are raging across the Amazon rain forest in Brazil for the last three months are threatening one of the most remote tribes in the world.
A group of Yanomami Indians in Northern Brazil have lost around 600,000 hectares of their forest reserve to the fires.
Little foreign aid has been offered to help Brazil's own small fire- fighting resources and nature is not helping either.
1998 has been an exceptionally dry year and forecasters are not predicting rain until mid-April.
In the heart of the Roraima state in northern Brazil lies the Yanomami reservation.
The fires raging through Brazil have already penetrated 12 miles (19 kms) into the tribe's lands, destroying their environment and endangering their health.
Throughout Brazil different groups of Yanomami Indians live with varying degrees of contact with outsiders.
Those currently threatened by the fires are the most isolated group.
The fires are closing in on Yanomami settlements and many people are suffering from the smoke as the fire engulfs more and more of the forest.
So far no Yanomami have been killed in the fires but three grass covered huts have been burnt down.
Slash and burn is to blame for the fires, started by colonisers who want to clear vast tracts of land quickly and cheaply.
The Yanomami themselves employ the slash and burn technique but until now they have lived in harmony with their environment - clearing small plots for subsistence farming.
But the rain which usually checks the fires has not come this year.
The Yanomami perform rain dances and chants to try to bring on a downpour.
So far this year less than an inch of rain has fallen and, with no sign of it being forecast, Yanomami leaders are getting increasingly desperate.

What they Brazilian government has to do is to stop the fire. They have money. They have aeroplanes. They have helicopters to take water to end this fire. They cannot just wait for the rain to stop it, the fire will stay. The rain will take a long time to fall in the forest so he (President Henrique Cardoso) has to send people to stop the fire before it enters the Yanomami reserve. If this doesn't happen, we will have problems and we will fight again. So, the authorities must spend some money to stop this fire.

The Yanomami reserve covers 10 million hectares (25 million acres) of forest but fires started by settlers outside the reserve know no boundaries.

That means we are very worried. Very worried. We have been through, we have already suffered a lot. We don't want to suffer more, so they have to respect our land.

Dozens of smaller fires are also burning out of control within the reserve.
So far Brazil's government has offered two (m) million dollars (U-S) in emergency funds but local officials say this will go nowhere when renting enough helicopters for a week would cost 1.5 (m) million dollars (U-S).
Help is also being sought from the European Union and international doctors' groups to help deal with the crisis.
