Village Food in AMAZON RAINFOREST - Lemongrass Ants + EXOTIC Energy Drinks! | Manaus, Brazil!

Thanks to Guilherme ( for taking us around Brazil. #Brazil #Amazon #AmazonFood
MANAUS, BRAZIL - During my food trip to Brazil there was no place I wanted to visit more than the Amazon Rainforest. We flew to Manaus (if you look at a map, Manaus is directly in the heart center of the Amazon). The jungle, the unique dishes and fruits, and the people made it incredible.
Exotic fruit tasting - One of the things that you have to do when you’re in Brazil, especially in the Amazon is sample all the unique and indigenous fruits of the region, some that are only available there. We started with mari-mari, an amazing long pod fruit and have inga (ice cream bean fruit) and biribá - wild sugar apple. All the fruit - 10 BRL ($2.55)
Manaus is a pretty big city, especially for being in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest. They have a big market, full of fruits, vegetables and fish. We headed straight for some tucumã, a type of palm tree fruit that’s essential in the local diet.
Jenipapo - Along the way we also tried some jenipapo, a pretty unique fruit.
Tucumã sandwiches - Sandwich shop owners better take note! Tucumã sandwiches are a true Amazonian food and they are delicious. Along with the palm fruit they were paired with cheese and fried sweet banana. It’s a perfect breakfast and way to start the day in the Amazon. Price - about 10 BRL ($2.55) per sandwich
Tambaqui fish - Tambaqui is a fish from the Amazon that’s known for having ribs - seriously almost like pork ribs. We decided to get a fish to bring to the village since we weren’t sure what they’d have al the village.
Amazon village - We didn’t really have a plan, we were just going to find a boat driver and ask him to take us to a village and see if anyone could cool. So we got a boat, and our boat driver asked if they were home and if we could invite ourselves in. We arrived completely unplanned and unannounced and it turned out to be an outstanding learning experience and fun time with an amazing family in the Amazon.
Along with the food we brought, the family mixed up about 4 different exotic drinks - some of them known in the Western world as ingredients in trendy energy drinks - but here in the Amazon of Brazil they are consumed regularly.
It was such an awesome Brazilian Amazonian food meal with the family followed by a time of drumming and dancing, football, and finally a swim in the river. It was an extraordinary day in the Amazon of Brazil.

It can be a challenge to get botanical collections from Amazonian trees. We employ climbers to scale trees using foot straps (peconhas). When positioned near the canopy, they use pruning poles to make the collections. I asked our climber Manoel to film his ascent of a tree in our study area north of Manaus, Brazil. For further info on our research see

Amazon Jungle 2016 - Unreal Brazil
Amazon Jungle - Private Adventures of a Life Time.
4 days / 3 nights Jungle Experience:
Day 1:
We start the adventure with an airport pick-up.
After a 30 minute drive to the first river boat transfer spot.
We get to see the Meeting of Waters - two rivers that run side by side without mixing!
After a 20 minute boat taxi ride, its off to a VW Bus ride through the Amazon to the next river boat transfer spot. From there it's a 20 minute river boat ride to the secluded island B&B where we stayed for 2 nights in a cabana. For meals we eat fresh caught fish from the river that is caught from the family each day, and culinary meals that rival great restaurants.
The first night we head out on the boat to try and see animal life before sunset. Parrots, tropical birds, monkeys, crocodile and Pink Dolphins are all likely possibilities!
Day 2
After breakfast, we head out on a hiking adventure through the jungle.
This is one of the best parts of the trip because we get to learn how the indians would use every part of the jungle for survival.
Some things we would see on the hike:
Cut open fresh brazil nuts
See the tree that is used to make poison darts
Entice ants on to your hands, that is used as a natural mosquito repellant.
Make a tree climber belt that is used to climb the Acai Tree to pick fruit.
Eat a bug from inside of a coconut.
Drink water from a vine.
Learn how locals make roofing with a specific palm tree.
See monkeys and experience the jungle like never before.
After lunch, we head out to fish for piranha for that nights dinner.
Day 3
Hike to the biggest tree in the Amazon
Relax in a hammock before we head out to our camp spot.
Take a boat ride to a hidden spot in the jungle for the nights jungle experience.
We set up camp, wove a table cloth, hung up our hammocks and took a boat ride to fish for dinner.
We set up a net to catch passing fish and fished for piranha in a different location. It was pretty wild driving the boat through the river that had trees in the middle of it that were 15 feet under water and still growing tall above the water.
Luckily we caught enough fish for dinner and feasted on a meal fit for kings and queens that night, or at least it felt like that.
We had plenty of fish, rice, veggies and grilled pineapple. We also made our own spoons and chopsticks using palm wood.
Day 4
After breakfast, we planted an acai tree in front of our cabana and that finished off our amazing trip!
