Amazonas Flussdelfine Botos in Manaus

Brazil's Dammed Rainforest
The Belo Monte Dam hydroelectric complex, on the Xingu River in Brazil's Amazon rainforest, is due to be completed in 2019. Photographer Daniel Beltrá visited the area. His pictures, part of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition hosted by the Natural History Museum in London, United Kingdom, show how the local environment has been affected by the industrial activities spurred by the project.

Thousands of World Cup visitors to the city of Manaus in the Amazon rainforest this summer are likel
Thousands of World Cup visitors to the city of Manaus in the Amazon rainforest this summer are likely to miss out on one of its most fascinating sites, the Paricatuba Ruins.
The site can only be reached by boat or by car and there is virtually no signage pointing to it.
Adventurous tourists travelling by car will have to cross a bridge across the Rio Negro and endure an hour-long ride over bumpy dirt roads to reach the jungle enshrouded villa.
Massive root structures now poke through the foundations of the once-stately neo-classical edifice.
Children of the tiny village of Paricatuba, who grew up around the villa, use the ruins as their own private Maracana and often can be found playing football there.
Nearby residents hope it will attract the more adventurous travellers among the 52,000 or so foreigners expected to descend on Manaus for World Cup matches.
Paricatuba was built in 1898 at the height of the region's rubber boom, which briefly transformed Manaus into one of the richest cities in the world.
The sprawling villa was initially intended to house the Italian immigrants who arrived to work in the rubber trade.
The building's decline over the next century mirrored that of Manaus, which after the rubber boom went bust, slipped into a long period of decadence and decay.
Visitors who make the effort to visit the ruins need not worry about finding a guide.
Packs of schoolchildren eagerly greet new visitors, excited by the chance to show travellers their unique playground.
