Ambler, Pennsylvania | 1 Minute City
The first episode in my 1 minute city series, I briefly document the small town of Ambler, Pennsylvania - a suburb just outside of Philadelphia.
This town, much like the rest of the Philadelphia area, has a large Italian presence.
I stayed here for over a week and definitely felt the small town connected vibe that some of the characters in this video share as a characteristic of the town.

[ 1 Minute City ]
I visit a lot of no name places. Small towns so quiet that no one hears of them, areas of a large city that may not get the representation they deserve.
This series is a way for me to briefly share the vibe of these different locales that I visit.

REACH Ambler - From Factory To Future
Like many northeastern American towns, Ambler once relied on a single factory for its economy and identity. Keasbey and Mattison, a producer of asbestos-containing products, opened its factory in Ambler in 1881. The company employed residents, built homes, opened businesses, founded cultural institutions, and created utility companies. After several sales the factory closed in 1987, leaving behind several waste sites—the “White Mountains” of asbestos. In 1983 and 2009 the EPA designated these former factory sites for Superfund cleanup, igniting community members to examine their history and contemplate Ambler’s future. In this short film, hear about the steps Ambler residents took, and are still taking, to preserve their community.
Resources for Education and Action for Community Health in Ambler (REACH Ambler) explores the history, environmental health, and community identity of Ambler, Pennsylvania, through a partnership between the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine and the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF). The Importance of Learning from Averted and Completed School Attacks
In this 90-minute webinar, Dr. Frank Straub and Jeff Allison provide an overview of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services-funded Averted School Violence (ASV) database and its application to higher education. The database is a free resource for those who play a role in school safety across the country at both the K-12 and higher education levels. The ASV database is used to collect, analyze, and share information on both averted and completed acts of violence in schools that have occurred post-Columbine. Frank discusses key findings from the ASV database and from a National Police Foundation study that compared averted incidents of school violence to completed incidents. Kristina Anderson, a Virginia Tech shooting survivor, shares lessons learned from the Virginia Tech shooting. Her powerful story, including insight about threat assessment and other key areas of violence prevention, are valuable for anyone involved in campus safety.

PROGRAM NOTES
Throughout my career as a musician I have had the privilege of performing at and visiting many churches in North America and Europe. Most of these beautiful buildings include elaborate stained glass windows, which were created to convey messages quickly and easily to the congregations due to widespread illiteracy. Stories of faith and morality were the predominant themes. Some of the oldest windows have been found in archeological digs in Italy dating back to 800 AD. When basking in the glow of one of these windows a sense of calm is almost always experienced by the visitor.
I have always been amazed that a beam of light, individual pieces of iron and broken glass can blend together and create a beautiful, singular, otherworldly, sense of calm and awe, much like a piece of music. Both invite the audience to have their own deeply personal experiences.
Being tasked to compose this important piece of music for such a wide range of ages, abilities, instruments and voices, was daunting, to say the least. For a few weeks I sketched ideas down and recorded motifs, with nothing too inspiring, until I remembered a particularly beautiful stained glass window that I saw in Florence, Italy at The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Standing in the sun’s warm glow as it reached through the colored glass adorning the window, I was overcome with a sense of warmth and serenity, created by those tiny, individual pieces of broken glass. The experience was overwhelming and unforgettable.
At this time in history we all see lots of pieces of broken glass (sadness, tyranny, violence, etc…). We see these pieces in the news, in our neighborhoods, in our school and sometimes sadly, in our homes. However, if we all take ownership in trying to make the world a more peaceful and joyous place everyday, with just one small gesture, we, like a stained glass window can turn thousands of pieces of broken glass into one beautiful illumination of peace and love.
Sean J. Kennedy, October 27, 2017, Ambler, Pennsylvania
As always, thank you for the daily inspiration from my wife Heather, and our children Ashley, Juliet, Aidan and Natalie, and to the continued support from my mother and father.
Thank you to my friends Andre Tarantiles, Peter Hilliard, Kevin Cotellese, Mae Huang, Steve Glanzmann, Jeffrey Smith, Donald Nally and Douglas Wilfert, for assisting me during the editing process.
And a special note of thanks to Conn-Selmer Inc. for inviting me to tour their factory in Elkhart, Indiana in the spring of 2015. While touring the factory I met the amazing Chris Frano. At the time, Ms. Frano was the sole tuner and assembler of Musser tubular chimes. Watching her tune the chimes was pure magic, she had the power to take a piece of raw metal tubing and make it sing. The Chime solos throughout this work are based on rough sketches of an unrealized composition that I started soon after that factory tour.

The Boyertown PA Opera House Fire 1908 (171 Deaths)
The Rhoads Opera House Fire occurred on January 13, 1908 in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. The opera house caught fire during a church-sponsored stage play. The fire started when a kerosene lamp was knocked over, lighting gasoline from a stereoscopic machine. The stage and auditorium were located on the 2nd floor and all auxiliary exits were either unmarked or locked. One fire escape was available but unable to be accessed through a locked window above a 3 foot sill. 171 people perished when the exit was crowded against to escape the fire. Entire families were wiped out.
