KIRIBATI (CENTRAL PACIFIC): EXPLORING the beautiful LAGOON ????, THE TARAWA ATOLL at low tide
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to the Republic of Kiribati in the Central Pacific Ocean and let's enjoy wonderful views of the lagoon of the Tarawa Atoll (which is part of Kiribati). We will see beautiful views of the lagoon at low tide, this is the lagoon that the American forces assaulted in November of 1943 in order to take it over from the Japanese..
Kiribati, an island republic in the Central Pacific, comprises 33 coral atolls and isles stretching along the equator. With lagoons and white-sand beaches, many of its islands are uninhabited, offering a remote setting for fishing, diving and bird-watching. The crowded capital, South Tarawa, made up of small islets, retains remnants of WWII battles fought on its shores, and is known for folk dancing and handicrafts.

Kiribati: a drowning paradise in the South Pacific | DW Documentary
Climate change and rising sea levels mean the island nation of Kiribati in the South Pacific is at risk of disappearing into the sea.
But the island’s inhabitants aren’t giving up. They are doing what they can to save their island from inundation. Can COP23 help make a difference?
UN estimates indicate that Kiribati could disappear in just 30 or 40 years. That’s because the average elevation is less than two meters above sea level. And some of the knock-on effects of climate change have made the situation more difficult. Kiribati can hardly be surpassed in terms of charm and natural beauty. There are 33 atolls and one reef island – spread out over an area of 3.5 million square kilometers. All have white, sandy beaches and blue lagoons. Kiribati is the world’s largest state that consists exclusively of atolls. A local resident named Kaboua points to the empty, barren land around him and says, There used to be a large village here with 70 families. But these days, this land is only accessible at low tide. At high tide, it's all under water. Kaboua says that sea levels are rising all the time, and swallowing up the land. That’s why many people here build walls made of stone and driftwood, or sand or rubbish. But these barriers won't stand up to the increasing number of storm surges. Others are trying to protect against coastal erosion by planting mangrove shrubs or small trees. But another local resident, Vasiti Tebamare, remains optimistic. She works for KiriCAN, an environmental organization. Vasiti says: The industrialized countries -- the United States, China, and Europe -- use fossil fuels for their own ends. But what about us? Kiribati's government has even bought land on an island in Fiji, so it can evacuate its people in an emergency. But Vasiti and most of the other residents don't want to leave.

My island Kiribati - MORDI Communities in Kiribati
A video presentation that shows the communities we work with in remote outer islands of Kiribati. The work MORDI program is doing is bringing some relief to the people. But there are bigger and much more complicated problem like Sea Level rise and climate change that we want everyone to join hands to combat so that we can save these communities and in deed a whole country from being wipes out of the face of earth.
Beautiful Tarawa
I had to do a test flight in the helicopter after some repairs and thought I would take the Gopro along.

Gavin, Carl, Benn, Colin, Peter and Wayne were off on an adventure to the North East of Australia in the Republic of Kiribati.
The prize was bonefish and despite the weather, they landed over 250 bones in the week they were there. Large GT's rolling in the shallows, tailing as they feed, pristine water and rich culture of the island were all highlights of the trip.

MICRONESIA - KIRIBATI ISLAND
History Of Kiribati
The islands which now form the Republic of Kiribati have been inhabited for at least seven hundred years, and possibly much longer. The initial Micronesian population, which remains the overwhelming majority today, was visited by Polynesian and Melanesian invaders before the first European sailors visited the islands in the 17th century. For much of the subsequent period, the main island chain, the Gilbert Islands, was ruled as part of the British Empire. The country gained its independence in 1979 and has since been known as Kiribati.

In Kiribati… What’s Possible?
Kiribati is widely recognized as one of the world’s smallest and most isolated countries, with 32 islands dispersed across 3.5 million square kilometres across the Pacific Ocean. Life in this island nation has already seen dramatic changes due to climate change.
We recently visited Bairiki, in South Tarawa, Kiribati’s capital, to find out what the country’s future leaders think is possible for their island nation’s future.
This is part of a World Bank report series, Pacific Possible, focusing on the challenges and opportunities for the Pacific Islands region in coming decades. Join the discussion in the comments below, at worldbank.org/pacificpossible, or with the #PacificPossible hashtag on Twitter.
