Madidi is a national park in the upper Amazon river basin in Bolivia. Established in 1995,[2] it has an area of 18,958 square kilometres, and along with nearby protected (though not necessarily contiguous) areas Manuripi-Heath, Apolobamba, and (across the border in Peru) the Manu Biosphere Reserve. Madidi is part of one of the largest protected areas in the world.
Ranging from the glacier-covered peaks of the high Andes Mountains to the tropical rainforests of the Tuichi River, Madidi and its neighbors are recognized as one of the planet's most biologically diverse regions.[3] In particular, Madidi protects parts of the Bolivian Yungas and Bolivian montande dry forests ecoregions.[4]
The Madidi National Park can be reached from Rurrenabaque if you cross the Beni River with the small passenger ferry over to San Buenaventura.
The local people who have migrated here from the Andean highlands speak the Quechua language. The cultures who find their origin here are the Tacana, the Mosete, the Tsimane and the Ese Ejja, all of which have their own language which pertains to one language group.[5]
Some eco-lodges are found in and around the Madidi National Park. The oldest and best known is Chalalan Ecolodge in Chalalán on the Tuichi River, a successful community-based enterprise that generates significant economic benefits to indigenous communities (Malky et al., 2007). Another important site is the Serere Sanctuary operated by Madidi Travel; a 4000 hectare private reserve dedicated to generating income through tourism for on-going conservation work to establish new legally protected zones in the north of the Madidi Mosaic. Others include San Miguel del Bala Eco-Lodge on the banks of the Beni River reached by boat 40 minutes up stream from Rurrenabaque, and the young Entno Ecolodge - Mashaquipe on the Tuichi River close to the outlet into the Beni River.

discoveringbolivia.com 1 Day Trekking with Michael Blendinger Nature Tours through the Yungas of Park Amboró towards the archaeological Site the Devil's Tooth. For those who love trekking, the 7-hour demanding hike through the cloud forest (las Yungas) is an exercise rich in landscapes and encounters with the flora and fauna of this ecosystem. The trail lies at 1500 to 2200 meters above sea level, offering a great opportunity to train for altiplano trekks. We begin our day with an hour long hike up the hillside of Las Lauras, identifying along the way the names of Plush-crested Jays and parakeets hidden amongst the thicket, as well as erythrinas and lapacho trees. We continue until we reach La Mina Pass where a tree fern forest nourishes itself with the humidity of clouds that habitually wind their way through the canopy of weinmannias, bolivian pines, bolivian cedars, and myrtaceaes. With a little luck we will cross paths with the Capuchin Monkeys´ aerial route or hear the song of quetzals, trogons, tinamous, guans, thrushes, and antpittas. Once on the other side we will head down for two hours to reach the forest of laurels and bolivian walnut trees. After lunch we will hike for an hour between the wind-twisted trees along the ridge which divides the watersheds of the Piray and Yapacaní rivers. We then reach the parrots´ cliff on the Devil's Tooth. From a lookout, well inside the park's borders, the spectacular view of the Devil's Tooth and the sight of both valleys enshrouded by mist make the trip very worthwhile. Those with strong hearts and ankles can climb up for one hour to the top of the Tooth if they are not daunted by heights. From the lookout we head down for 2 hours towards Piedras Blancas through steep bamboo undergrowth beneath a forest of bolivian walnut trees and laurels. There are many photo opportunities (200 to 400 ISO). From the Inter-Andean valleys, it takes an hour by 4x4 jeep on a dirt road to reach the trail, and another hour coming back down. Bring raincoat and insect repellent.

A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride.
An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on
Protected Areas, has defined National Park as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people, Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a national park in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. Some would say that the first official
national park to be designated as such at its creation was Mackinac Island, legislated in 1875. Australia's Royal
National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, 6,555 national parks worldwide met its criteria in 2006. IUCN is still discussing the parameters of defining a national park.
National parks are almost always open to visitors. Most national parks provide outdoor recreation and camping opportunities as well as classes designed to educate the public on the importance of conservation and the natural wonders of the land in which the national park is located.

It's all here! We chronicle the first leg of our first family roadtrip in Bolivia! We took our Nissan Patrol to Santa Cruz from our home in Cochabamba, a distance of about 300 miles. The clips in this video are from between Cochabamba and Villa Tunari, a fantastic area of change from high, arid mountains to low, humid jungle.
I didn't mention it in the video, but we crossed 12,100 feet just after 2:13. You can see the elevation profile of the trip here:
