36 men have tried and 33 have failed. What happened to the 3 men who made it the farthest? Here’s the untold truth about the Alcatraz escape!
9 - Background on Alcatraz
The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was a maximum-security federal prison on Alcatraz Island, around one and a quarter miles off the coast of San Francisco. Given its high security and the island's location in the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz was believed to be escape-proof and America's strongest prison. Alcatraz was used to hold prisoners who caused trouble at other federal prisons. It housed roughly fifteen hundred federal inmates, including some of America's most infamous criminals. Al Capone and George Machine Gun Kelly are some examples. The three-story cellhouse had four main cell blocks, A-block through D-block, right in the center. The warden's office and visitation room were on one end of the building. The dining hall and kitchen areas were on the other side, along with the exercise yard. The prison cells typically measured 9 feet by 5 feet and 7 feet high. Each prisoner had their own cell, but they were primitive and lacked privacy. They were only outfitted with the bare necessities. Prisoners followed a strict daily routine and their whereabouts were known at all times. To give you an idea of how closely they checked on prisoners, a total of 13 official counts were made every 24 hours! Escape seemed almost impossible! Despite the odds, from 1934 until the prison was closed in 1963, 36 men tried 14 separate escapes. Nearly all were caught or didn’t survive the attempt. However, the fate of three particular inmates remains a mystery to this day!
8 - The Escapees
Inmates Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin were the prisoners who attempted the infamous 1962 prison break out of Alcatraz! Frank Lee Morris was orphaned at age 11 and spent most of his childhood in foster homes. He was convicted of his first crime at age 13, and by his late teens he had been arrested for crimes such as armed robbery! However, even with his criminal past, Morris was in the 98th percentile in intelligence. Supposedly he had an IQ of 133. Genius level is considered 140 and above. Escaping from Alcatraz actually wasn’t his first escape! He escaped from the Louisiana State Penitentiary while serving time for bank robbery. He was caught again a year later sent to Alcatraz in January 1960. The Anglin brothers, John and Clarence, were born into a family of thirteen children in Georgia. The brothers began robbing banks and other businesses as a team in the early 1950s. They targeted places that were closed, to ensure that no one got injured. They claimed that they used a weapon only once, during a bank heist, with a toy gun. By the 1960s, both received sentences that brought them to Alcatraz. But how did the brothers and Frank Morris come together? They all had served time together at the United States Penitentiary in Atlanta! After repeated failed attempts to escape from the Atlanta facility, the brothers were transferred to Alcatraz. A fourth guy, Allen West, was also involved although he didn’t leave Alcatraz with the trio. West was serving his second term in Alcatraz. He knew John Anglin from prison time together in Florida. The escape plan started to take shape in December of 1961, beginning with a collection of several old saw blades that West allegedly found in one of the utility corridors while cleaning. And that’s why he was pulled into the escape. In later interviews, West would take credit for masterminding the whole thing!
7 - The Plan
While in Alcatraz, inmate Clarence Carnes became friends with Morris and told him about the access tunnel behind their cells. Morris used this information to develop the overall escape plan. They then all carefully planned the escape for eight months, leaving nothing to coincidence. Over the next six months, the men widened the ventilation ducts beneath their sinks using the saw blades discovered by West. They also used metal spoons smuggled in from the dining hall. Amazingly enough, they also made an electric drill improvised from the motor of a vacuum cleaner! They hid the noise of their work with the louder noise of Morris playing his accordion during music hour. That was in addition to all the noise of instruments during music hour! Yup, that’s right, Alcatraz had a music hour.
Exploring Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA
Fort Lauderdale was an unknown destination to me just a few years ago -- as I discovered more I learned of its popularity among Americans ([particularly those from the North -- think New York and Chicago). On meeting the Fort Lauderdale Tourism team I learnt it is a huge gay destination.
When I was invited to get familiar with the place how could I say no? Florida? Summer? Sun? Gay? Hell yes!
American Airlines flies direct from London - Miami followed by a short 40-minute taxi transfer. Delta also flies in this direction, possibly with a stopover in New York (great for a two tiered vacation).
As the plane descends to its landing spot the sea transcends from a deep blue to a bright azure with each ripple emitting a shine of a 1000 stars -- little different to a carpet of fairy dusting. The 8.5 hour journey could be made more comfortable by better food and entertainment on AA (AirFrance, British Airways and Virgin kick these guys above RAir for preferred airlines) however the service is friendly and relaxed.
Fort Lauderdale is on the south of Florida -- the weather is excellent all year round; winters can drop to a minimum of 5 degrees while the summers average 30+ degrees. Perfect weather for the perfect beaches.
Florida is certainly not short of hotels and was significantly affected by the recession -- here in Fort Lauderdale there are properties abandoned, left dormant while the owners wait in hope that very soon the economy will pick up and they can reopen (or for some, open for the first time). However it's certainly not all gloom, some hotels have performed well and invested in their future -- among them The Royal Palms.
The Royal Palms is a boutique Hotel recently renovated especially for the gay market with a sleek contemporary European style meets splendour. This 62-room resort has been expanded courtesy of two additional buildings plus a more glamorous makeover in the shape of two heated swimming pools (one clothing-optional), a bar/grill, spa and fitness center, all just a few blocks from gay Sebastien Beach. royalpalms.com
The whitewashed buildings create a bright open fresh space becoming a suntrap. GG's Bar and Grill is the open-air showpiece decked in ruby-red glass tiles, misters, and a polished deep stone bar overlooking a pool adorned with patio furniture and poolside cabanas.
Steel, grey and black patio furniture and stylish poolside cabanas add to the scene. A spa with wet room and massage rooms for single or double use and a fitness center (with Dennis Dean photo gallery for inspiration) ensure guests can get appropriately relaxed or pumped before exploring Walton Manors, the city's gay nightlife. Day passes will also allow non-guests to savor the Royal Palms experience.
Fort Lauderdale is next to Miami -- and Miami says it all -- here the 300 miles of coastline accompanied by predictably hot and sunny weather, the food is fresh and ripe and the people with a heath glow.
If you're a keen sportsman the beach is packed with opportunities to join in team games, alternatively -- like myself - you can enjoy an early morning run along the promenade to take in the full spectacle of the rising sun followed by a dip in the Pacific Ocean.
Fort Lauderdale is certainly an escape from the ordinary of the hustle and bustle.
NOTE:
American Airlines -- will also charge you for Wine and Beer and you must pay by credit card, on this trip in USD. The option here is AA save you hours in transfer as it is a direct London Miami, however I have been assured the Sky Team are launching a direct flight to Fort Lauderdale by Summer 2011.

Brothers Justin and Adam Fricke Drive to All 50 US States in Their Sprinter Van
Fricke brothers Justin, 25, and Adam, 23, decided to surf, hike, climb and party their way round their US 'backyard'. They set out on their mission on January 1 this year and are working freelance on the road to help pay for their trip. The pair put aside $45,000 for the expedition from savings and sponsors which included funds for a portable home.
Two brothers have revealed how chatting about girls over beers was the catalyst for an incredible adventure in which they'd set out to visit all 50 states of America - in a van.
Desperate to escape unfulfilling desk jobs, Justin, 25, and Adam Fricke, 23, decided that there was never a better time to hit the open road, using a converted 82-square-ft Sprinter van.
Since leaving in January this year, the pair from Florida have been surfing, hiking, climbing and partying their way round their US 'backyard'.
The seed for the idea came from Justin, who planned to take a year-long road-trip with his girlfriend.
His younger brother Adam stepped in to cheer him up after she ended the relationship.
'A few days later, Adam took me out for beers to help ease the pain and it dawned on me, he's great at photo and video work, I'm a writer with writing contracts and have some connections within the outdoor industry, we should do this year-long road trip together,' Jason told MailOnline Travel.
Putting their words into actions, the pair left at the beginning of this year in a bid to visit all 50 states in 2016 in a project they have dubbed The Bro'd Trip.
They're funding the adventure out of their own pockets, with a little corporate help.
Justin saved up for the trip while working as a banker in commercial real estate lending and living rent-free at home.
Fresh-out-of-college Adam had some money saved from freelance photography and videography jobs, and with help from a few sponsors they hit their pre-trip target of $45,000 (£31,274).
They used $21,000 (£14,575) to invest in their mobile home, and set about renovating it with a further $1,000 (£694) to make it the perfect transportable bachelor pad.
This included adding flooring, shelves, drawers, a kitchen area, a collapsible table and a freestanding bed frame that can hold two twin-size mattresses.
For power they installed solar panels to the roof that connect to a generator inside the van for charging electronics.
Although they occasionally splash out for a paid campsite, most of the time they find free locations to park in, and one of their favourite spots is in Walmart car parks - so breakfast and toilets are right on their doorstep.
Hoping to 'become their own bosses along the way' the brothers are picking up freelance writer, photographer and videographer work as they go, and have aspirations to make a docu-movie and book about their life on the road.
Justin said: 'This trip for me is a dream and I'm hoping to get an awesome experience to share with my brother, first and foremost - and so far it's been working out that way.'
Currently the pair have visited over 11 states and say the experiences are not without their challenges.
'Three to four months in is when things start getting grimy, dirty and real. Where all the good stories are born, we were told,' Justin wrote on his Instagram.
'It's month three and I'm right on schedule. It feels like nothing's gone right lately. We need a new EGR valve and I've fallen into a deep rut that wants to bring me down and hold me down like quick sand.
'I know that all these challenges just make that next sunrise so much more beautiful, remarkable and meaningful.'
In-between their many activities, the pair have been uploading their escapades to YouTube. Clips include swimming in lakes, climbing cliffs and earning their beads in Mardi Gras.
'It's a great experience to have with my brother and the memories we'll make this year aren't something you can buy with money,' Adam commented.

SUMMARY
=======
Slavery among Native Americans in the United States includes slavery by Native Americans as well as slavery of Native Americans roughly within the present-day United States. Tribal territories and the slave trade ranged over present-day borders. Some Native American tribes held war captives as slaves prior to and during European colonization, some Native Americans were captured and sold by others into slavery to Europeans, and a small number of tribes, in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, adopted the practice of holding slaves as chattel property and held increasing numbers of African-American slaves.
Pre-contact forms of slavery were generally distinct from the form of chattel slavery developed by Europeans in North America during the colonial period. European influence greatly changed slavery used by Native Americans. As they raided other tribes to capture slaves for sales to Europeans, they fell into destructive wars among themselves, and against Europeans.

Why More People are Finding Snakes in the Toilet
One North Carolina man found a snake in his toilet and ended up in a tug-of-war match with it. Homeowner Mike Green says snakes in his North Carolina neighborhood of Lattermore have been getting into bathrooms through the ventilation pipes on the roofs. He came out of a tree that was hanging over the pipe, he told Inside Edition. This was the sixth snake to come out of the toilet in four years.
SEE IT: How the new Toys 'R' Us stores will be different from the original ones
New Toys R Us stores will be a fraction of the size of the original stores and will be focused in high traffic locations, like the Garden State Plaza mall.

Geronimo’s Story of His Life
GERONIMO
Geronimo’s Story of His Life is the oral life history of a legendary Apache warrior. Composed in 1905, while Geronimo was being held as a U.S. prisoner of war at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Geronimo’s story found audience and publication through the efforts of S. M. Barrett--Lawton, Oklahoma, Superintendent of Education, who wrote in his preface that “the initial idea of the compilation of this work was . . . to extend to Geronimo as a prisoner of war the courtesy due any captive, i.e. the right to state the causes which impelled him in his opposition to our civilization and laws.” Barrett, with the assistance of Asa Deklugie, son of Nedni chief Whoa as Apache translator, wrote down the story as Geronimo told it --beginning with an Apache creation myth. Geronimo recounted bloody battles with Mexican troopers, against whom he had vowed vengeance in 1858 after they murdered his mother, his wife, and his three small children. He told of treaties made between Apaches and the U.S. Army--and treaties broken. There were periods of confinement on the reservations, and escapes. And there were his final days on the run, when the U.S. Army put 5000 men in the field against his small band of 39 Apache.
Geronimo had been a prisoner of war for 19 years when he told his story. Born in 1829, he was by then an old man, no longer a warrior, and he had come to an accommodation with many things “white,” including an appreciation of money. U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs personnel took him to the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, where he roped cows in the “wild west show” and signed his name for “ten, fifteen, or twenty five cents.” By then he was perhaps the United States’ most “famous” Indian. In 1905 he was even invited to ride horseback in President Theodore Roosevelt’s inaugural parade (though still a prisoner of war!).
Geronimo dedicated his book to Roosevelt with the plea that he and his people be allowed to return to their ancestral land in Arizona. “It is my land, my home, my father’s land, to which I now ask to be allowed to return. I want to spend my last days there, and be buried among those mountains. If this could be I might die in peace.” Geronimo died at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in 1909, still a prisoner of war.
