US Route 1 Road Trip, Part 1: Rural Maine - Fort Kent to Portland
Road trip along historic US Route 1, commencing in Fort Kent, Maine and culminating in Key West, Florida. The journey spanned 14 states in 14 days.
Part 1 begins at a monument in Fort Kent, dedicated to the first mile of US Route 1, a milestone. It represents the official the northern terminus of the highway. From Fort Kent, Route 1 meanders along the St. John River, the water boundary between Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, before veering southward. As the highway snakes along the Atlantic coastline, it encounters a bevy of small, idyllic towns and picturesque vistas.
This leg represents two days of travel, separated by the black fadeout midway through the video.
The musical selections are:
Bethena, A Concert Waltz by Scott Joplin
Paris Nostalgie, Cine a Papa, and Beaux Quarters, from Killer Tracks.

Fort Kent to Eagle Lake Route Information:
Let's step back to a simpler time in the United States of America and travel to the eastern seaboard and then northeast to the state of Maine. Even in Maine we will keep heading north until we reach the central northernmost part of Maine to just south of the Canadian border. We arrive at two towns separated by 19 miles of track, Fort Kent and Eagle Lake. This is where All Aboard's newest installment of the railroading experience begins.

Highway 1 Attractions (You CANNOT Skip These!)
Highway 1 Attractions (You CANNOT Skip These!) || Doing the Pacific Highway road trip along the California coast is one of the mandatory vacations that take you through America's most breathtaking places. In this video, I am going to take you on a Pacific Coast Highway tour and show you the places you CANNOT skip! This includes Highway 1 beaches and other things to do on Highway 1.
Along the first stretch of California coast Highway 1, two of the best stops are Montara State Beach and Pomponio State Beach. At Montara State Beach, you get a beautiful backdrop of blue ocean waters blending into tall mountainous terrain. Pomponio State Beach allows you to walk right onto the beach.
The second place to stop on your PCH trip is Carmel-By-The-Sea. Also known as the land of fairytale cottages, this fantasy town has great upscale restaurants, shops with homemade crafts and goods, and also features the 17-mile drive, where you can see beautiful natural phenomena like Lone Cyprus.
The third item that should be on your California coast road trip itinerary is Big Sur, and more specifically, the Bixby Creek Bridge. This bridge is one of the best stops on Highway 1 and is among the tallest bridges of its kind in the world! You will also see more exaggerated tall winding roads that overlook scenic turquoise waters.
During your drive on US 1 California, the fourth item is Santa Barbara. Here you will find the historic Old Mission Santa Barbara, State Street which has great shopping and restaurants, and the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, where you can get a great view of the city from up top!
The last of this list of Highway 1 stops is Malibu. I went to Zuma Beach, which is gorgeous and you will definitely notice a difference between Malibu beaches and the more tourist-friendly ones like Venice Beach. Before you finish your California Route 1 road trip, check out the Getty Villa, a huge mansion with expensive and prominent art pieces collected over the years.
Overall, if you want to visit the big cities, it is definitely worth going from San Francisco to Los Angeles via Highway 1. The natural beauty and fun towns you will encounter along this stretch make the trip absolutely worth it!

Crossroads Of America
United States Highway Route 1 starts in Key West (Florida), goes through every major city along the East Coast, and terminates at the Canadian border in Maine. United States Highway Route 30 starts at the Atlantic Ocean in New Jersey, crosses the country as the Lincoln Highway (for the most part), and ends in Oregon at the Pacific Ocean. These two cross-country highways intersect at the western-most edge of Philadelphia. This movie was taken at this intersection -- a true crossroads of America.
Some day I would love to start at the end of either one of these roads, slowly drive to the other end, and take photographs all along the way.

Is This The Scariest Bridge In America?
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland reaches nearly 200 feet in certain parts and measures 4.3-miles long from end to end - and for some motorists, getting behind the wheel and driving across the bridge is simply out of the question.
Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races 2015
Henry and I took a scenic ride to the top of our state to Fort Kent in February to check out the 23rd annual Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races. This year trail conditions were excellent. The trails were packed, temperatures were ideal, and the sun was bright!
The first race was a 250 mile race held in February of 1993. It featured 9 teams from Maine and Canada competing for a $10,000 purse raised entirely through local donations. Mushers experienced blizzard conditions during the first race, with 15” of snow falling in the first 24hrs and temperatures which reached 32 deg below zero.
In 1994 the 250 mile race had 16 entrants and one skijorer, and the very first 60 mile race was introduced. The first 30 mile race was held in 1997 and the purse for all 3 races that year totaled close to $20,000.
The race begins at 8am with the 60 mile mushers leaving from Main Street in Fort Kent. One team is released every 2 minutes in order of bib numbers which are randomly drawn. The 60 mile race is followed by the 30 mile race and then the 250 mile race.
The finish is located at the Lonesome Pine Ski Lodge in Fort Kent. The 30 and 60 mile mushers finish on Saturday, and the 250 mile mushers cross the finish line between Monday and Tuesday.
The hard packed starting trail which follows Main Street is constructed in one day. Locals told us that the town of Fort Kent collects and saves snow during storms to be used to make the near perfect trail which runs down Main Street.
