America's Stonehenge on the Autumnal Equinox in Salem, New Hampshire
SALEM, N.H. — Using the astronomical chart on a table in the covered tower, visitors aim their gaze along worn arrows to huge, upright stones hundreds of feet away. Beyond each slab of granite, clearings stretch the eye to the horizon on a dazzling day in late summer New Hampshire.
On Wednesday's autumnal equinox, people will flock to the woods near the Massachusetts state line, watch the sun rise or fall over the huge chunks of granite and decide for themselves whether they're standing amid relics of ancient history or pure hooey.
This is “America's Stonehenge,” a weird, one-acre grouping of rock configurations named for the mysterious formation on England's Salisbury Plain. It has drawn believers who say it's a thousand or more years old and skeptics who say the evidence suggests it was the work of a 19th century shoemaker.
For $12, visitors get to meander along well-trod footpaths through walls of stacked granite, some overtopped with slabs that weigh several tons to form cave-like enclosures like the “Sundeck” chamber and “V-hut.” The spooky centerpiece is the “Oracle” chamber, complete with what is billed as a secret bed and a speaking tube where words spoken from inside the chamber could be heard outside at the equally eerie “Sacrificial Table.”
Owner Dennis Stone firmly believes the site — called “Mystery Hill Caves” when it opened in 1958 — is as much as 4,000 years old, the work of Native Americans or perhaps ancient Europeans who arrived millennia before Columbus.
Stone said three carbon dating efforts indicate the site was used about 4,000 years ago and one fire pit is 7,300 years old. (Scientists say the research proves only that there was a fire and that none of those dates is linked to human activity.)
Anthropologists and archaeologists believe America's Stonehenge was more likely the homestead of shoemaker Jonathan Pattee, who settled here in 1823.
In his 2006 book “The Archaeology of New Hampshire: Exploring 10,000 Years in the Granite State,” Plymouth State University archaeologist David Starbuck called America's Stonehenge “unquestionably provocative, puzzling and, above all, controversial.”
Starbuck notes the 19th century quarrying marks on many of the stones and said the site has been altered so many times over the decades — particularly by owner and researcher William Goodwin starting in 1936 — that there will never be a way to settle the argument over its genesis.
“There is probably no serious, trained archaeologist who believes that it was created thousands of years ago,” Starbuck said.
“There's a huge burden of proof when you make controversial claims,” he said. “They've always had that problem. That doesn't take away from the inherent interest in that site. It is a curious place and it is worth visiting.”

America's Stonehenge ( Mystery Hill )- Mysterious Stone Structures in New Hampshire FOUND Sacrifice Table [ NOT CLICKBAIT ]
America's Stonehenge is located in Salem , New Hampshire. It is called America's Stonehenge because just like the original Stonehenge in England, America's Stonehenge has many astronomical alignments.
The megalithic structures here were built over 4,000 years ago but no one knows who built them. Some people believe that natives built the while others believe the structures were built by Vikings, the Phoneticians ( thank them by the way), Irish Monks, the Knights Templar or possibly Aliens.
The stone structures and chambers here may remind you of Luke Skywalker's home from Star Wars : The Last Jedi. That's because Irish Monks built Luke's home and those same monks are the ones that William Goodwin (former owner of Mystery Hill) believed built the structures here at america's Stonehenge.
Come along and join us as we go explore America's Stonehenge...

Archaeological Site of America's Stonehenge
America's Stonehenge is an archaeological site consisting of a number of large rocks and stone structures scattered around roughly 30 acres within the town of Salem, New Hampshire in the northeast United States. America's Stonehenge is open to the public for a fee.
The site was first dubbed Mystery Hill by William Goodwin, an insurance executive who purchased the area in 1937. This was the official name of the site until 1982, when it was renamed America's Stonehenge, a term coined in a news article in the early 1960s, in an effort to separate it from roadside oddity sites and reinforce the idea that it is an ancient archaeological site. Although the area is named after the archaeological site of Stonehenge in England, there is no cultural connection between the two.

NH Tourist Destination: Americas Stonehenge is a Mysterious Hill located in Salem New Hampshire
NH Tourist Destination: Americas Stonehenge is a Mysterious Hill located in Salem New Hampshire
Americas Stonehenge is a New Hampshire Tourist Destination located on a mysterious Hill in Southern New Hampshire. Americas Stonehenge was originally opened to the public in 1958 under the name Mystery Hills Caves. The name was changed to Americas Stonehenge in 1982 to better reflect theories which have been formulated due to Historian Research, and Scientific Carbon Dating results which tie it to Britain's Stonehenge.
Over the decades it has become a New Hampshire Tourist Destination for those who are interested in the fields of Archaeology, History, Astronomy, and lithic stone working techniques.
Americas Stonehenge has been under Archaeological study since 1937, when William Goodwin purchased the site. The various chambers was named by the President of the Connecticut Archaeological Society in the 1950's and offer theories of the purpose through naming. These were not meant to be a declaration of what they were, but one interpretation.
Americas Stonehenge includes a 20 acre calendar is laid out on this Mystery Hill. From a viewing Platform constructed in 1975 you can view the major Astronomical alignment stones, including the stones used for true North alignment as well as the summer and winter solstice sunrise and sunset monolith. And True South pointing Wall.
Various Languages carved in inscriptions throughout the site suggest Phoenician, Celtic, and Libyan roots.
About a dozen various scientific tests have been conducted on Americas Stonehenge from 1966 to the 1990s.
Recently a new theory has been proposed which suggests that the Mystery Hill site was part of the Underground Railroad.
Many theories exist which have yet to be proven, or disproven. But it is a fun NH Tourist destination for adults and children to spend a couple hours at a Historic site at the heart of a local historical controversy.
Americas Stonehenge is one of the largest and possibly the oldest megalithic (stone constructed) sites in New Hampshire.
Like Stonehenge in England, America’s Stonehenge was built by ancient people well versed in astronomy and stone construction.
It has been determined that Stonehenge in Salem NH, is an accurate, astronomically aligned calendar. It was, and still can be, used to determine specific solar and lunar events of the year.
Was New England’s Stonehenge built by a Native American culture or a migrant European population? No one knows for sure. A maze of man-made chambers, walls and ceremonial meeting places, Mystery Hill Salem NH is most likely the oldest man-made construction in the United States (over 4000 years old).
Archaeological excavation at the site has uncovered an amazing range of historic and pre-historic artifacts — from stone tools, pottery and ancient old world scripts to 18th and 19th century
Housewares, and manacles (possibly removed from slaves who used the site as a stop on the Underground Railroad in the 1830’s and 1840’s).
Along with its astronomical alignments, Stonehenge in NH, continues to be one of the most fascinating discoveries of the century.
Although America’s Stonehenge is not a unique set of structures in New England. Thousands of archaeological sites with similar architecturally significant stone structures can be found.
Over 500 of these sites contain stone chambers. Astronomical alignments have been confirmed at some of these sites as well.
Stonehenge in Salem New Hampshire stands out amongst all of these others sites because it is arguably the most complex, sophisticated, and visually impressive of all the known stone structure sites in New England.
The site has become famous by Television personalities like Leonard Nimoy on 70s Television series “In Search of…”. The episode was called “Strange Visitors” and it was still referenced as “Mystery Hill” in that show.
Another Star Trek actor hosted an episode on “Weird or What?” titled “Human Popsicle”. William Shatner appeared on the TV Series to weigh in on potential explanations for the site now known as Americas Stonehenge.
In another sort of Documentary series called “America Unearthed” episode Stonehenge in America dealt with the obvious named connections of the site to Stonehenge in England tied in with the Phoenician culture.
On the History Channel a series titled “Secrets of the Ancient World” also spoke of the History of the US Stonehenge site in New England.
