UK: DUXFORD: QUEEN ELIZABETH OPENS NEW AMERICAN AIR MUSEUM UPDATE
English/Nat
Queen Elizabeth II opened a new museum in England on Friday which is a tribute to U-S airmen who have served in the U-K over the past 80 years.
The American Air Museum in Cambridgeshire celebrates the transatlantic links between the U-S Air Force and the British Royal Air Force.
A dream realised - after more than 11 years of fund-raising and 18 months of construction.
More than four-thousand U-S war veterans travelled to Duxford in Cambridgeshire, southern England, on Friday to attend the opening of this museum.
The American Air Museum was built with a six and a half (m) million pound (10.5 (m) million U-S dollar) grant from the U-K's National Lottery and thousands of donations from U-S servicemen.
Queen Elizabeth II accompanied by her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, opened the 70-thousand square feet museum - Europe's largest pre-built concrete structure designed by top British architect Sir Norman Foster.
Veteran actor - and former army sergeant - Charlton Heston also made the journey to pay tribute to fellow Hollywood star, James Stewart, who was the main U-S fundraiser before his death last month.
The British monarch paid tribute to the 30-thousand U-S airmen based at British bases who gave their lives fighting in the Second World War.
SOUNDBITE:
I'm particularly pleased to see so many Americans here today and I take this opportunity to take them for their generosity in supporting the museum. In giving, they have paid tribute to those who served their country in the air in peace and in war. We celebrate today a new symbol of Anglo-American friendship - a memorial to the 30-thousand Americans who lost their lives flying alongside their Royal Air Force colleagues from British bases in the Second World War. I'm now very pleased to declare the American Air Museum open.
SUPER CAPTION: Queen Elizabeth II, British Monarch
The royals toured the museum for half an hour before meeting veterans who had made the transatlantic journey for the occasion.
The opening ceremony ended with a fly-past of veteran U-S aircraft - including this B-17, more commonly known as the Flying Fortress.

Bill Nye Introduces the American Air Museum
Bill Nye explains why the alliance between the United States and Great Britain is as strong now as it was through two world wars. It is central to the purpose of the American Air Museum at IWM Duxford in Cambridgeshire, England, to mark the importance of that alliance and to make sure that the contribution of the nearly 30,000 US air force personnel who served in Great Britain is not forgotten. A look around The new American Air Museum at IWM Duxford - Daily Mail
The American Air Museum at IWM Duxford, Cambridgeshire, is home to a range of aircraft from the last 100 years, from the Boeing-Stearman biplane to the F-4 Phantom II fighter bomber (pictured). It also documents the personal experiences of those involved in conflict, including those of WWII flight engineer Bill Toombs, 91 (pictured inset with a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress). The museum looks at conflicts in chronological order, beginning at 1918 and continuing on to the present day.
