Amirthi Zoological Park is a zoo in Tiruvannamalai District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was opened in 1967 and is about 55 kilometres (34 mi) from district headquarters Tiruvannamalai city and 25 kilometres (16 mi) from the Vellore city. The area of the park is 25 hectares and one can find beautiful water falls.
Half of this jungle is cleared to serve as a tourist spot while the other half is developed as a wildlife sanctuary. A trek for a kilometre leads one to a full view of seasonal waterfall. The inflow of tourists is more only during the holidays. Animals at the park include spotted deer, mongoose, hedgehog, foxes, reason monkeys, red headed parrots, love birds, tortoises, peacock, crocodiles, wild cats, eagles, ducks, pigeons, wild parrots, rabbits, and pythons.

Amirthi Zoological Park is a famous tourist attraction in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. It was established in the year 1967 in the district of Tiruvannamalai. It spans a total area of 62 acres that is divided into 2 sections. The first half of this zoological park is designed to serve the tourists, whereas, the second half is utilized as a wildlife sanctuary. It is visited by numerous tourists on a large scale.

1) Amirthi Zoological Park is a home to a variety of animals. One can find the animals like the monkey, hedgehog, tortoise, hare, rabbit etc.
2) Various birds like the Brahminy eagle, partridge, duck, white pigeon etc. are also found here

At a distance of 27 km from Vellore Town Railway Station, Amirthi Zoological Park is situated under the Javadu hills of Tellai across Amirthi River. Established in 1967, the zoo park occupies an area of 25 hectares. It is named after the Amirthi River which flows next to the park.
This park is popular for its waterfalls, swing and animal habitats. Half of this jungle is cleared to serve as a tourist spot while the other half is developed as a wildlife sanctuary. One km trek in the park leads to a full view of Amirthi falls, a small cascading seasonal falls. Visitors can play and swim in the pool formed by the falls here in monsoons.
Animals in the park include spotted deer, mongoose, hedgehog, foxes, reason monkeys, red headed parrots, love birds, tortoises, peacock, crocodiles, wild cats, eagles, ducks, pigeons, wild parrots, rabbits and pythons. Many herbal and medicinal plants can be seen growing in the Park. A meditation hall and rest houses for stay are available at the Park premises. The Park is especially delightful for kids with children play area.
This zoological park has been recognized recently and so the state Government has taken initiative to develop it. Amirthi Zoo can be reached from Vaniyambadi via Kanikkaniyan & Melmoil.
The best time to visit the park is from October to March.

Amirthi Zoological Park : Chennai has very few one-day getaways unlike cities located on the west coast of India. Amirthi forest is about 170 km from Chennai - about 3 hours drive. If you expect exotic animals and gigantic water falls, then this is not the place for you. It is a small zoo set against the backdrop of Javadhu hills. You can reach Vellore - the medieval town through the Golden Quadrilateral Highway that connects Chennai to Bangaluru and then drive through a narrow state highway to Amirthi.
The eastern Ghat hills - Javadhu Hills has many small reserve forests - Alangayam Reserve Forest, Javadhu Polur Reserve Forest and Pudupalayam Reserve Forest. Reserved forests are set up by the state governments primarily to protect the forest area and keep them safe from hunting and other forms of exploitation. Access to these forests are restricted and most reserve forest access roads would be blocked after 6 pm.
Tamil Nadu Government has converted part of the forest range into a Zoological Park. They have set up an Elephant lodge to care for the captive elephants here.
