Cragy island, North Andaman, India
Journey to Craggy Island. Departing from Kalipur beach.
Playing Robinsons just for one day on this tiny uninhabited island.
Ever dreamed about spending a day on remote uninhabited island?
I love the Craggy Island and I consider it to be one of the highlights of all Andaman adventure, but I have to start with shouting “beware!” loud. If you plan your North Andaman trip, you will see a few sources saying that “Craggy Island is just a swim away from Kalipur beach”. Trust me, it is not “just a swim away”. While yes, you can swim to Craggy , it is A) far, B) The shores of Kalipur beach nearest to Cragy island are made of sharp rocks and 3) there is a current between the two.
Snorkelling at Craggy is great. It is especially fantastic after you have been to Mahatma Gandhi National park’s Jolly Buoy island, where they forced you to snorkel in life west, holding a guide’s hand. Craggy is freedom! Snorkel as much as you like, wherever you like.
Take 2 litres of water per person and to avoid sunburn, take something to create a shade, e.g. take a large blanket or sun umbrella. The jungle is too dense to hide into and there is no natural shade on the beach.
( Also Cragy, Craegy Island- even Tourist department uses multiple spellings in its official materials)

North Andaman Ross & Smith Islands aka Twin Islands Andaman Detail Information: -
TWIN ISLANDS : ROSS & SMITH ISLANDS - Ross & Smith islands are actually two islands – Ross Island & Smith Island joined together by a sand bar to make a single group of islands. Ross & Smith Islands requires to go from Diglipur (North Andaman). A fisherman's boat or a speed boat can be hired and the ride would take around 25 mins from the Aerial Bay Jetty in Diglipur. What makes these islands truly beautiful and sets them apart from the rest of the islands is that these two islands are joined by a natural, sand bar. Water is crystal clear and gem green in color. Sun bathing in Ross & Smith Islands is a wonderful experience. During high tide, the sand bar disappears leaving a trail of water between the two islands and during low tide the sand bar appears again making the islands look majestic! There is a Marine Sanctuary on the island which makes it an ideal place for spotting beautiful coral reefs and colorful species from the underwater. The beach is surrounded by tropical forests and is a preferred place for trekking and trail hiking by many tourists. One can also opt for activities like Scuba Diving & Snorkeling. The clear blue waters add a touch of cleanliness to the whole experience. Ross & Smith islands are home to the Olive Ridley turtles which means, being the right place at the right time, one can even witness the turtle nesting.
Why The Andaman and Nicobar Islands so important for India
Located at the entrance of straits of Malacca having spread over 350 Islands & an area of 8250 Sq.km, The Andaman & Nicobar Island is the one of the most strategically important island chain in the world. It is the only place where India’s tri-service military command is operational. The straits of Malacca, world’s second-busiest waterway is the passage which amounts 80% of China’s oil imports ( nearly six million barrels of oil per day). It is also known as the vocal cord to china, Japan & south Korea’s energy economy. The Andaman & Nicobar Command is the vital military establishment keeping India’s hawk eye in the region as stubborn China is being more assertive now-a-days. India has decided to modify its military infrastructure & deployment in the Andaman & Nicobar island. The theatre command hosts just one infantry brigade, around 30 warships – mostly amphibious landing ship tanks and small landing craft and a handful of Dornier-228 maritime patrol aircraft, Mi-8 and Chetak helicopters, two P-8I Poseidon aircraft for surveillance, reconnaissance as well as Submarine hunting & some UAVs. IAF is also planning to station one SU-30MKI squadron, C-130J Planes & Predator Guardian Drones, some S-400 Batteries and another 1-2 infantry brigade to the Theatre command. Many of us don’t know that, Andaman is known as the MIDDLE EAST of India due to its Huge Oil & Gas Reserves. This is because of subduction process which is happening in the Bay of Bengal whereby Indo-Australian plate is diving under Eurasian Crustal Plate and leading ride of crude oil & natural gas. Indonesia is in the possession of the southern part of this subduction zone which enables it to produce over 1 million barrels of crude oil daily alongside making it the No .1 producer of natural gas in the Asia-Pacific region. Even Myanmar which lies to the north of this subduction zone produce 30k barrels of crude oil daily. It has even installed offshore oil & gas fields near the Andaman basin for large scale explorations and purification. The question that arises is that why India splurges its foreign currency reserves while our very neighbours Indonesia and Myanmar are exploiting the very oil reserves right in our backyard in Bay of Bengal. The ocean around Andaman and Nicobar Islands falls under the 55,000 Km subduction zone of Indo-Australian plates; subduction zone is the zone for potential crude oil sites. Out of this 60,000 Km of subduction zone, 7,500 Km of land and ocean are the part of international territorial waters of India. It would be interesting to note that this entire zone rich in oil & natural gas is spread across an area of 83,419 square km. 22 deep water bores were explored and were found to be rich in oil & natural gas. An estimated 75% of India’s sedimentary basins are yet to be explored. According to a Gov report, 18 trillion cubic feet of reserves are yet to be produced in India and 27 trillion cubic feet of reserves are yet to be developed. India spends 31% of its foreign exchange on buying oil & gas from middle east. India explored oil and natural gas in Iran, Myanmar, Africa and other countries since independence but they have not explored oil throughout our own country. If India starts extracting oil from deep waters, then nobody can stop us from becoming an exporter of oil as well as a member of OPEC & our economy will become strongest in the world with unprecedented GDP growth. The dream of what we see about $ 1 DOLLAR becoming Rs 1 Rupee will be true. But Some Western & Sheikh Interest resisting Gov of India & ONGC to explore such oil reserves in India. These lobbies don’t want India to overtake them at one go. However, India will extract oil form these reserves at any cost. Government of India is planning to move forward in this direction. So that’s the reason ANDAMAN NICOBAR ISLAND is significant for India.

Little Andaman highlights in 2 minutes. Kalapathar Beach, Hut Bay, Butler Bay, Island interior
Complete guide to Little Andaman Island, with maps, see here:
Not many people make their way to this remote island. Little Andaman has since ever been the southernmost point of Andaman and Nicobar islands you could get to. Further south, direction to the Nicobar Islands, the “road” has been closed. Even with the news, that came out in August 2018, that Nicobar islands will be open to foreigners, Little Andaman will remain a remote, attractive and little-visited island.
As exciting as it can be, an only tiny strip of land at the eastern shore is cultivated and inhabited. Most of the Andaman Island is a dense jungle and tribal reserve, where stone age is still present.
Why visit / Highlights
Little Andaman has that sensational feel of the end of the world. Kilometres of Beaches are completely free of any humans, jungle waterfalls and water reservoirs wait just for you. You probably meet no tourist during the day, maybe a few in your accommodation exchanging stories around dinner. Enjoy a motorbike ride along the island’s road and feel the complete freedom to discover the beauty of this island. And the best thing about Little Andaman: it is surprisingly inexpensive!

Sona Pahar Nalla water supply scheme in the Andamans
Women workers (wearing sarees) labour on a dam project in the rain forests of the Andaman Islands, India.
Seen here are the policeman supervising the villagers as they work at a construction site for Sonapahar Dam or Sonapaharnalla or Sona Pahar Naala Water Supply Scheme in Andamans and Nicobar Islands, India. Foundation stone was laid by Sri. A. P. Abdulla Kutty, Councellor (Public Works) on March 3rd 1988.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of islands at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, and are a Union Territory of India. The territory is 150 km (93 mi) north of Aceh in Indonesia and separated from Thailand and Burma by the Andaman Sea. It comprises two island groups, the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands, separated by the 10° N parallel, with the Andamans to the north of this latitude, and the Nicobars to the south. The Andaman Sea lies to the east and the Bay of Bengal to the west. The territory's capital is the Andamanese town of Port Blair. The total land area of the territory is approximately 6,496 km2. The capital of Nicobar Islands is Car Nicobar.
There are 572 islands in the territory having an area of 8,249 km2. Of these, only 38 are permanently inhabited. The islands extends from 6° to 14° North latitudes and from 92° to 94° East longitudes. The Andamans are separated from the Nicobar group by a channel called the Ten Degree Channel which is about 150 km wide. The Saddle Peak at 732 m located in North Andaman Island is the highest point. The Andaman group has 325 islands which cover an area of 6,408 km2 while the Nicobar group has only 24 islands with an area of 1,841 km2. Andaman & Nicobar Islands are blessed with a unique tropical rainforest canopy, made of a mixed flora with elements from Indian, Myanmarese, Malaysian and endemic floral strains. So far, about 2,200 varieties of plants have been recorded, out of which 200 are endemic and 1,300 do not occur in mainland India.
The islands have been inhabited for several thousand years, at the very least. The earliest archaeological evidence yet documented goes back some 2,200 years; however, genetic and cultural studies suggest that the indigenous Andamanese people may have been isolated from other populations since the Middle Paleolithic. In that time, the Andamanese have diversified into distinct linguistic, cultural and territorial groups. The Nicobar Islands appear to have been populated by people of various backgrounds. At the time of the European contact, the indigenous inhabitants were the Nicobarese people, speaking a Mon-Khmer language; and the Shompen, whose language is of uncertain affiliation. Both are unrelated to the Andamanese.
