EP5 - Exploring Ammonite Falls (Nanaimo, BC)
We visit Ammonite Falls in Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island - one of the best waterfalls on the island! This is a must-see if you can get there.
It's a 30 minutes to walk to the falls, with a few ups and down spots along the way - nothing too challenging until the end where you have to navigate down to the water using ropes permanently installed. This part of the hike definitely raises the level from easy to moderate. In the summer months, when it's not raining and there is no mud, it's much easier, but there is less water going over the waterfall.

Breathtaking waterfall with a perfect forested 1.5 mile hike in. Water levels in the summer are much lower, but in November, it is rocking!
Ammonite Falls Nanaimo BC - Vlog 130
This week we will share with you our third and final waterfall visit in Nanaimo BC, Ammonite Falls. These falls are listed as a 20 minute hike, but even on the sign people have crossed off this optimistic suggestion! On many blogs I saw suggestions from 30-40 minutes to the falls. I would say it took us at least 45 minutes to walk to the falls, probably more like an hour. Tim and I talked about this later and noted that the first time on a trail usually takes longer because we are unfamiliar. The trails are well kept but you will definitely need hiking shoes. There are some varied ground with inclines and declines.
The most challenging part of the trail is at the falls themselves. This part is a steep cliff down to the falls. At this point you can scale down the cliff using the support of the ropes. I have been on hikes before with ropes for support, but honestly you would not be able to do this part of the hike without the ropes. This part of the hike definitely raises the level from easy to moderate. In the summer months, when there is not rain, it is not possible to see the falls from the top, so you need to be in good enough shape to scale down the roped incline if you want to see the falls. As with all our Nanaimo falls, we would love to return once rainy season starts to see the falls with more water.

AMMONITE FALLS: The Hidden Waterfall near Nanaimo, BC!
Ammonite Falls is an easy-to-moderately difficult hike near Nanaimo. The waterfall itself lies within Benson Creek Falls Regional Park, though the hike starts outside the park boundaries.
Most of the trail is easy to follow and has minimal elevation change. But the final section of trail to the waterfall is steep and can be difficult, though there are ropes in place to assist.
Along the hike the Ammonite Falls, you can enjoy the beautiful forest of massive fir trees. Unfortunately, you also walk through a large area of clear-cutting on the way to the falls.

Ammonite Falls - Nanaimo, BC
The hike to Ammonite Falls is fun and it's very close to town. The entrance to the falls is pretty steep but the ropes someone put up make it manageable. Use caution, the rocks below the falls are extremely slippery.

Another attempt to make it to the falls.
Do I make it this time?
The goal was to go for a gentle walk, explore a different route in, and just enjoy the experience. This time I was by myself.
There are trails going in every direction in that area. They have been used by many, many people over the years: deer, bears, dirt bikes, mountain bikes, serious hikers, families, people walking their dogs, and as I found out on this trek, horses.
If you're not familiar with the area and are serious about making it to the falls, I highly recommend a gps.
I apologize for the bad video. It was done with my smart phone. One of these days, I'll invest in a better recording device as it's a shame not to see nature as it really looks.

What can you buy in Nanaimo for 600 grand
This is a normal $600,000.00 home in Nanaimo with a 2 bedroom suite in the basement. All together 7 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and a 2 car garage. I'm looking at this place for my friend Qian. She is in China visiting her mom and dad so Gweilo has to go see. The real estate lady was Chinese of course and her husband rcognised me from my Gweilo 60 channel. Smile all good.
