Tour of Roman Amphitheater in Trier Germany
Near the imperial baths in Trier, Germany, are the ruins of a Roman amphitheater, dating from the first century AD. The amphitheater was used in the Roman imperial era (until the 5th century) for gladiator fights and animal contests.
The entire structure, consisting of an elliptical arena and a stepped auditorium, was surrounded by a high wall, divided into individual stories by colonnaded arcades. The complex could seat up to 25,000 people. Underneath the arena is a vast basement where gladiators, criminals, and exotic beasts were kept prior to their release into the arena.
In the 5th century, the inhabitants of Trier used the amphitheater as a place of refuge from the increasingly frequent raids by Germanic tribes. The site was used as a quarry in the Middle Ages.
Today, the amphitheater area is used for the Antiquity Festival and open-air concerts.

The Trier Amphitheater is a Roman Amphitheater in Trier, Germany. It is designated as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Trier and its amphitheater resembled many Roman cities of its time in that many infamous gladiatorial contests occurred there.
The theater which was dug into the side of a hill was erected around the 2nd century A.D during Antoninus Pius' rule. It could accommodate approximately 20,000 spectators and was built into what was the cities wall.
When Constantius Chlorus moved to Trier, Germany around 293 he renovated the amphitheater. The multiple usages of the arena included gladiator events and animal shows in which a cellar under the arena was utilized to store the animals and sentence prisoners to death.

Doch die Blütezeit von Brot und Spiele ist lange vorbei. Roman Monuments of Trier - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Trier, in the far west of Germany, just a stone's throw from Luxembourg, lays claim to being the oldest city in the country. It was founded as a Roman military encampment, and due to its strategic position on the Rhine it became one of the most important cities in the Empire (after only Rome, the eastern capital in Constantinople, and the Egyptian capital in Alexandria). There's a great legacy of buildings here, including bathhouses, fortifications, an amphitheatre, throne room and a bridge, though several buildings were closed due to snow and ice on the day we visited. But it was still a lot of fun!

Trier, which lies in the Moselle wine region along the banks of the Moselle River, is the oldest city in Germany. The city is home to the University of Trier.
Trier is a southwestern German city in the Moselle wine region, near the Luxembourg border. Founded by the Romans, it contains several well-preserved Roman structures like the Porta Nigra gate, the ruins of Roman baths, an amphitheater just outside the center and a stone bridge over the Moselle River. The Archaeological Museum displays Roman artifacts. Among Trier’s many Catholic churches is Trier Cathedral.

HEIDELBERG, EXPLORING a 1930s amphitheater built by National Socialists (GERMANY)
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the Heidelberg Thingstätte which is an open-air theatre on the Heiligenberg in Heidelberg (Germany) and which was built during the Third Reich for performances and events as part of the Thingspiel movement. It is currently a protected cultural monument.
The Heiligenberg theatre is one of the official Thingstätten or Thingplätze built in the first part of the Nazi era as part of the Thingspiel movement. It is in the form of an egg-shaped amphitheatre and has a capacity of approximately 8,000 seats or 15,000 standees. The architect was Hermann Alker. Work began in late April 1934 and was to have been completed in July, but paused and resumed on the reduced plan, and the facility was completed in June 1935 and dedicated on the 22nd of that month. Approximately 20,000 people attended, and in his address to them Joseph Goebbels spoke of the 'holy mountain' that was the site and he described the theatre as National Socialism in stone and compared the construction of Thingstätten to that of the autobahns. The opening festivities concluded with a summer solstice celebration during which Franz Philipp's cantata Heiliges Vaterland was performed.
After the war the American occupying forces held jazz concerts at the arena, and in 1947 used it for an Easter service which they invited Germans to attend. The site is now the property of the city, has been declared a state protected monument, and like the rest of the mountain, is tended by the Schutzgemeinschaft Heiligenberg.
Plans to resume use of the theatre for performances have been hindered by the lack of electricity and other services. However, since the late 1980s it has been unofficially used for annual celebrations of Walpurgis Night, which feature fire-dancers and jugglers and have attracted as many as 14,000 people.
In 2014 the city introduced Sunday and holiday bus service to the theatre, and there are plans to fell approximately one third of the trees on the mountain beginning in 2016; some of these have obscured the view of the city from the theatre.

Gothic Heiliggeistkirche church towers over the cafe-lined Marktplatz, a town square in the Altstadt (Old Town). The red-sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle, a noted example of Renaissance architecture, stand on Königstuhl hill.
