Amphitrite Lighthouse is located on the western edge of Amphitrite Point which was named for the naval warship the HMS Amphitrite in 1859 by Captain George H. Richards of the Royal Navy. In 1906 a wooden lighthouse was built on the Point after the tragic shipwreck of the Pass of Melfort in 1905. After the original was destroyed by storm waves in 1914 it was replaced with the current lighthouse in 1915. Amphitrite Lighthouse was automated by the Canadian Coast Guard in 1988.
I was fortunate to spend afternoon here virtually alone, one or two other souls walked the gravel trails, mesmerized by the crashing waves. Such raw beauty and very dangerous. More than one ship was lost scattered here by the pounding waves. Winter storms are not to be trifled with along west coast of the Island. The footage says it well enough, except for the salt air and strong breeze. One of those bucket list places. Glad I'd done a few times in the mid eighties.
