Super RICH Punjabi THALI + Durgiana Temple Visit | Amritsar, India
In November of 2018, I had the opportunity to revisit one of my favorite destinations ever, India. I first visited this beautiful country eleven months earlier in January, and I fell in love with it. Now I can’t stop coming back to see more of the incredible cities and people that make this such a beautiful destination. My travel buddy Sam had been before as well, so we decided to team up on an epic, seven city trip across the subcontinent!

Our second day in Amritsar was well underway after a beautiful and emotional experience at the kitchens of the Golden Temple. Our day continued with a visit to yet another beautiful temple, Durgiana, as well as more outstanding Indian food in the form of a traditional Punjabi thali. Come along with me, Sam, and our friend Deepak from Amritsar Walking Tours as we continue to explore this amazing city!

Unlike the Golden Temple, which is a Sikh temple known as a Gurdwara, Durgiana Temple is a Hindu temple that is dedicated to the goddess Durga. It was built in 1921 in the middle of a sacred lake in the same architectural style of the Golden Temple. The two buildings look almost identical to one another!
Like the Golden Temple, you enter Durgiana barefoot. In order to gain entry, you must ring a large bell. Once we passed through the ornate silver doors, we spotted an idol of Shiva, the main god in the Hindu religion, which was draped with flowers as offerings, as well as marble stones etched with names and inscriptions. The temple was free of crowds and very peaceful. When you come here, I highly recommend a walk around the boardwalk to get some great views and photos of the temple itself. It’s absolutely gorgeous and a must-visit when you come to Amritsar.
Next, we headed over to Bharawan Da Dhaba, a famous local veg restaurant that has been in business since 1912! We ordered an authentic Amritsari Punjabi thali that contained maa ki dal, paneer, chole, boondi raita, rice, and butter naan.
The dal was sweet and earthy, and the paneer’s curry was so rich! The chunks of paneer were huge and there were so many flavors from all of the spices in it. The heat from it sneaks up on you! The chole, or chickpeas, was also outstanding. The curry was very thick and rich and I loved it! Next we tried the boondi raita, which is a type of yogurt. It was cold, light, and refreshing, and had a nice contrast with the hot naan. Next I tried a mango curry, which was really flavorful and spicy, with some of the chole. It was amazing!
After having a thali in Pune that only had paratha, and a thali in Hyderabad that only had rice, it was really nice to have a thali that contained both paratha and rice! It was like a nice mix of Northern and Southern thalis. I loved mixing the chickpea chole into the rice. It was so flavorful and had me going back to it again and again.
We wrapped up our meal with some chai at a small shop nearby. As usual, it was scorching hot, but wonderful as ever. And before we left, I had to thank my new friend Deepak for the incredible time he showed us in Amritsar. Go follow him!
I hope you enjoyed our drool-inducing thali meal and our trip to Durgiana Temple. If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. And please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss out on any of my upcoming food and travel content!
