Cleaning robots showcased at Minsk tech fest
(26 Oct 2016) LEAD IN:
Tech-savvy students in Belarus are bidding to represent their country at the upcoming World Robot Olympiad (WRO) in New Delhi next month.
The theme of this year's tech fest is 'Rap the Scrap', which challenges robot creators to design droids capable of reducing, recycling and managing waste.
STORY-LINE:
It's perhaps a futuristic vision of our future. This litter-picking robot is demonstrating how droids might be used to tidy public spaces in the future.
It's just one entrant from an array of hopefuls hoping to make it to the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) in New Delhi next month.
This year's theme is 'Rap the Scrap'. It focuses on how robots might be used to manage, recycle and reduce our planet's waste.
As you can see, our robot is capable of finding litter for example in the park, explains Minsk-based student, Karina Tsiulya.
There are many lazy people who do not like to put let's say a wrapper from ice cream into the garbage can, so our robot can find such litter, can collect it and identify material it is made of - plastic, metal or food waste - and it can sort it into three different containers.
The WRO features a variety of challenges, including robot football.
There's also an 'Open Category' where students are expected to come up with innovative uses of robotic technology.
Creative category is the most difficult one, because nobody can say what can go wrong, says Tsiulya.
You have a unique robot and you cannot ask anyone how to fix things. You rely on your fantasy and the knowledge who have got from the school.
Teams will compete in three groups - elementary, junior high and senior high.
The most difficult part is to assemble the robot correctly, all parts to be put in the right place so the program will be able to work as you want, says Mogilev-based student, Bogdan Maklakov.
We were creating robots and programs in a very tight timetable and we were forced to make changes very fast.
While they might not keep our planet looking tidy, these football-playing robots are drawing a large amount of attention.
And these entrants have some large shoes to fill.
Last year at WRO 2015 in Qatar, a Belarus team claimed fourth place in the 'Junior High' category out of 54 participating countries.
That means this year hopes are high. They're aiming for at least third place.
It is fourteen times the World Olympics has been conducted, says Igor Belevich, founder and director of the 'School of Robotics'.
The Republic of Belarus participated only twice and last year our Belarusian schoolchildren took the fourth place out of 54 countries.
Of course, it is a great achievement for us, definitely we wanted to be at the pedestal, but with fourth place we were ahead of many much more developed countries.
New Delhi's 2016 World Robot Olympiad will be held 25-27 November.
