When I was in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), along with eating as much Vietnamese food as I could, one of my goals was to film a travel video about some of the best things to do in Saigon. After putting together a complete list, it turned out to be 23, and I hope this list of attractions will help and inspire you to visit Vietnam’s largest and most exciting city.
1. Binh Tay Market - Binh Tay Market is one of the largest wholesale distribution markets, and a perfect place to go if you’re looking to go shopping in Ho Chi Minh City.
2. Thien Hau Temple (Pagoda) - Located in Chinatown, in District 5, the temple is dedicated to Thien Hau and I really loved the sculptures and the elaborate design of the temple.
3. Museum of Ho Chi Minh City - This museum offers a glimpse into the history and development of the city and Vietnam.
4. Bitexco Financial Tower - This is the tallest building in Saigon, and you can either go to the Skydeck or a cafe at the top for a view of the city.
5. Independence Palace (Reunification Palace) - Probably one of the most well known tourism things to do in Saigon is to visit the Independence Palace, the the former home of the president of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
6. Saigon Cathedral of Notre Dame - With the French influence in Vietnam, the Notre Dame cathedral is a beautiful Catholic church. Attend a service or just visit.
7. Central Post Office - Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City is an attraction mainly for its design and architecture. It’s a beautiful building.
8. War Remnants Museum - Although this is not one of the happiest attractions in Saigon, it’s a place to remember and honor the horrible events that are a result of a war.
9. Opera House - Right in Dong Khoi area, and there are still opera shows available.
10. Dong Khoi Street - This is the height of high end shopping in Saigon.
11. Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens - The zoo itself is not too great, but the beauty of the Saigon zoo is the botanical gardens, and the lush gardens, and taking a break from the city.
12. FITO Museum (Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine) - I was quite impressed by the Vietnamese medicine private museum - very interactive and educational.
13. San Art Laboratory – If you love modern art, the San Art Laboratory is a great place to see and visit in Saigon.
14. Turtle Lake at Night - If you’re looking for some things to do at night in Saigon, head to Turtle Lake to chill out, relax, hang out with friends, and eat snacks.
15. Ben Thanh Market - One of the most famous things to do in Saigon District 1 is visit the Ben Thanh Market, one of the major central landmarks of the city.
16. Phu My Hung and Starlight Bridge - Located outside of central Ho Chi Minh City, Phu My Hung is a modern development, and a great place to walk around.
17. Water Puppet Show - Though originally from the north of Vietnam, water puppet shows are popular also in Saigon. I went to the Golden Dragon Water Puppet theater.
18. Museum of Vietnamese History - Probably one of the most extensive and important museum showing the history of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City.
19. Rooftop Bar - Seeing Saigon from above offers a great perspective.
20. Fine Arts Museum - This was my favorite of all the museums in Saigon. The museum is housed in a well preserved building, and the art is amazing - located right in District 1 across the roundabout from Ben Thanh Market.
21. Jade Emperor Pagoda - Dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the pagoda has a real ancient feel to it, and it’s worth seeing when you visit.
22. Local Wet Market - One of my favorite things to do is visit a local fresh wet market, which you’ll find all over the city. The ingredients, food, and culture, all stand out at fresh markets.
23. Vietnamese Street Food - By my ultimate favorite activity in Saigon is eating street food, and there are an abundance of delicious Vietnamese street foods to sample.
Thank you for watching this video about the top 23 things to do in Saigon, Vietnam. I hope it has given you some great ideas to help you plan your visit.

VIETNAM’S LARGEST MARKET - Ben Thanh Market Ho Chi Minh City - Cheap Shopping in Vietnam
We visited Vietnam’s largest market, the Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City! This is where you can find the best cheap shopping in Vietnam. Think fake bags, cheap clothing, Vietnamese food, and incredible souvenirs all located within the Bến Thành Market. We show you the day market and the night market in Vietnam so you can make the best decision of which to visit.
The Ben Thanh Market in Saigon is the one of the largest and oldest Vietnam Markets. With over 3,000 vendors, Bến Thành is one of the best things to do in Saigon. You can find some of the best cheap shopping in Vietnam here all for incredible prices. The quality of the goods in this market are great and haggling is a must while you’re here! If you want to relax and avoid the bargaining, you can stay to the fixed pricing sections along the outer walls of Ben Thanh.
As far as a fake market in Vietnam is concerned, I would say you can find the highest quality knockoff goods here for the best prices. There are many markets in Saigon, but Ben Thanh is the biggest and most centrally located out of all. It is also the market that is most geared towards tourists so make sure you bring your best bargaining skills.
Vietnams largest market, also referred to as Cho Ben Thanh, is located in district 1 Ho Chi Minh city. You can find everything you need in district 1 including food, drinks, Vietnamese culture and more. After visiting Ben Thanh Market, you might want to hang around district 1 Saigon and wait for the Ben Thanh night market to kick off around 8pm.
Cho Ben Thanh is easily the top night market in Vietnam, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. We enjoyed the night market in Saigon a little bit better than the day market because there was space to move around. However, both markets sell very similar items. If you’re looking for things to do in Saigon, we highly recommend both the Ben Thanh Market and the Ben Thanh Night Market.

1) Buy Quirky Travel Souvenirs
Vietnam has more quirky travel souvenirs than just about any other country I've ever visited. From Weasel coffee (that's been pooped out) to snake wine this nation has it all. Come home armed with presents that will either shock or make your friends laugh out loud.
2) Visit the War Remnants Museum
The War Remnants museum is the most somber attraction on this list. The war itself was full of atrocities on both sides (although this museum is from the perspective of the north); however, it's the gallery focused on 'agent orange' that really caught our attention.
3) Wander around Thien Hau Pagoda
This fascinating Buddhist temple is dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea. In the past, people came here to pray for a safe trip before embarking on a journey out to sea. These days it's noteworthy for its incense burning and coils.
4) Binh Tay Market
If you're looking to brush elbows with locals (and tourists) head over to Binh Tay Market for all of the mayhem you can handle. If this place doesn't sell what you're looking for it's unlikely to exist anywhere else on earth.
5) Marvel at the Reunification Palace
The former Presidential Palace (now called the Reunification Palace) was once home to the President of South Vietnam. In April, 1975 this all changed when tanks from the north crashed through the gates. The premises have been left to look exactly the way it did many decades ago.
6) Visit Notre Dame Cathedral
This stunning Cathedral is a significant landmark in Saigon. Built with red bricks it really stands out and is right beside the General Post Office. Come on Sunday and you'll be treated to mass.
7) Check out the General Post Office
Last but certainly not least, make sure to check out the General Post Office. Designed by Gustave Eiffel (that guy who built the Eiffel Tower) when Vietnam was under control of French Indochina, its got a classic timeless appeal:
This is part of our Travel in Vietnam series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Vietnamese culture, Vietnamese arts, Vietnamese foods, Vietnamese religion and Vietnamese people.

Vietnam Diaries # 9, Artists of Vietnam , God of Small Things small wonder
Artful Vietnamese
Welcome to this episode of Vietnam diaries.
In this episode, we will show you how skilled are Vietnamese artists.
The fine art of silk painting.
The traditional Vietnamese art of silk painting has become famous around the world for its simple poetic themes and vibrant colors. The success of a silk painting very much depends on the quality of the silk, and this depends on many factors, from the quality of cocoons to the decisive techniques of starching and weaving.
First let us take a look at how silk is made.
Differently with other kinds of paintings, the silk canvas are usually not painted. The Vietnamese traditional silk painting style tends to use the silk canvas directly as the background of the painting. The colors are used delicately with the canvas to make Vietnamese silk paintings. Whatever style they follow, silk painters must have an intimate knowledge of the material and fully exploit its shininess and its attractiveness. Painting silk is full of changing and unexpected characteristics, and a wrong stroke of the brush is irreversible.
These paintings are made by the Vietnamese artists in Hue, central of Vietnam (110km from North of Da Nang.)
Each painting is a great description of the beautiful nature and talented skills of the Vietnamese.
Danang marble statues-
Vietnamese are highly skillful and they can carve beautiful statues with marble. There are lots of reason why marble is wonderful for the statues or sculpture. Marble is almost right density to handle, curve, and glossy once polished. Mable is also a good and best stone for human statues.
There are four basic methods of creating sculpture: Modeling, Assemblage, Casting and Carving.
Carving is a subtractive sculpting technique in which the sculptor chips away from the chosen material. Assembling is an additive sculpting technique that involves bringing materials together to form an art piece.
We could see a lot of marble works which are beautiful and exotic.
There is a huge market for these marble statues. These are exported to the world as well.
There are different marble types based on the colors. White marble, cream marble, black , red, brown and pink marble.
White marble Inspires purity and neatness, as well as providing light and spaciousness to any home or space, particularly when not combined with any other type of marble.
The cream shade combines perfectly with the wide range of existing natural colors, such as ivory and beige.
Black is the colour most commonly associated to luxury and elegance.
No doubt, Vietnam artists are highly skilled. There is a huge industry for their products. However there is room for standardization and marketing. And Vietnam is getting aggressive in this.
Hope you liked this video. Thanks for watching.

Saigon, from another side
You all know Saigon is a large city and you can find anything of Vietnam here. But Saigon changes himself daily. Even a Saigonese cannot know everything about it. Just need to cross the river, you will see another Saigon.
A Trend of Life
People of modern life refer to stay close to nature. Saigoneses also have this trend, especially the ones who have artist's souls. Visiting Ham Long Village Artisans, you will find a focus of more than 30 artisans, 15 artists including lacquer, oil painting, silk, water ceremony, sculptor... and many other foreign and domestic famous artists... in one destination. They live and create arts contributing to the city and Vietnam in general. And their houses are not story houses like you often see in big cities but house of Hue (Central Vietnam), house on stilts (highland of Vietnam) or Chinese-Vietnamese combined house,...
There are 06 main villas, home of the following artist:
Statue-garden space, artist Duong Dinh Hung
Art house on stilts, artist Bach Truong Son
Nguyen's art garden, artist Hoai Huong
Ky Long Gallery, artist Ly Khac Nhu
Gallery artist Ho Huu Thu
Gallery artist Thanh Chau
I have chance to meet and welcome by very friendly and hospitable artist Ly Khac Nhu on a sunny Sunday. This is also the only one opens for visitors fairly regular. The house of Ly Khac Nhu looks rustic with a simple leave-covered roof. He arranges many works of art and unique miniatures in their living spaces including oil painting, Chinese ink painting, lacquer painting, ceramic, Vietnamese traditional sculpture. You will find more than 95% photos in the clip taken inside his home.
Observe old Saigon from a new view point
As I told you, Saigon was different day by day. But when you are living inside it, you won't recognize this. Like when you hold your beloved too close to you, it's hard to feel changes in your lover. You just keep in mind familiar images. Please be realistic and generous, let him/her goes and wait no matter how long it will takes. It's worth lifetime for the right one. When he/she comes back, you will have a more attractive one only for you. I do hope that the song Please of singer Ha Anh Tuan can help to express what I mean. And as you can see in this clip, observing Saigon from another side, is it more beautiful?
Photos, words and choosing music by Truong Quoc Huy
