Forbidden City Main Gate, Beijing, China
The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty—the years 1420 to 1912. It is located in the centre of Beijing, China, and now houses the Palace Museum. It served as the home of emperors and their households as well as the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government for almost 500 years.
Constructed from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings[1] and covers 72 ha (180 acres).[2][3] The palace complex exemplifies traditional Chinese palatial architecture,[4] and has influenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia and elsewhere. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987,[4] and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.
Since 1925, the Forbidden City has been under the charge of the Palace Museum, whose extensive collection of artwork and artifacts were built upon the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Part of the museum's former collection is now located in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. Both museums descend from the same institution, but were split after the Chinese Civil War. With over 14 million annual visitors, the Palace Museum is the most visited Museum in the world

Beijing, China.
Visit to the Temple of Heaven and the Tiantan Park.
The Temple of Heaven and Tiantan Park are located in southern Dongcheng District and it's possible to enter from 4 gates (East, West, North and South Gates).
The through ticket cost 34 CNY and it included the 3 scenic spots: the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Echo Wall and the Circular Mound Altar.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a circular building and it was built on three levels of marble stone. It's where the Emperor prayed for the good harvests.
The Echo Wall has a perimeter of 193 meters. The wall is flat and it allows the sound waves to pass smoothly. If there are two people standing at the opposite side of the wall and one person whispers some words, the other one will be able to hear it.
The Circular Mound Altar is a circular stone altar. Every year on the day of the winter solstice during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911) the emperors would offer sacrifice to Heaven.

Review: #1 choice - Ding Tai Fung Chinese Dumpling Restaurant in Beijing, China near Yu Yang Hotel
Fresh ginger in dipping sauce
Review of my #1 favorite restaurant for soup dumplings in Beijing, China: 鼎泰丰 Din Tai Fung. Ding Tai Fung Chinese Dumpling is ranked the #1 restaurant in the mall in Beijing, China
If you visit this restaurant early in your travel, you will probably return. Maybe multiple times. The craftsmanship of the soup dumplings in Ding Tai Fung is perfect. It is as if they are produced in a factory with machine equipment, but they are not.
Cleanliness perfection. There is a kitchen right at the entrance of the restaurant. When I entered, I saw the chefs in surgical masks, outfits, maybe even goggles. The chefs in this restaurant are set up as perhaps they should be in every establishment. Pristine white chef jackets, hats, and surgical gloves. If that doesn’t put your germ-ridden mind at ease, the chefs are in a square room that can be seen from both the entrance of the restaurant and throughout the dining room. I even witnessed the chefs take a squeegee to the glass walls, allowing for streak-free, splatter-free viewing of the dumpling creation in the stainless steal kitchen.
Veggie delight in the form of Cucumber Heaven. I love a good cucumber. I love their sweet yet sour cousin, the pickle. I really, really love when a cucumber when it holds on for dear life to it’s crunchy bite and crisp appeal while getting dressed to be a pickle. Ding Tai Fung delivered my favorite pickle/cuc combo.
Gotta love a good condiment: red pepper oil with fresh julienne ginger. I dunked everything in this. Most Chinese restaurants have a clear jar of red pepper sauce. Don’t read the ingredients, it is nothing I would construct at home because of shear caloric intake, but when you are in Rome, errr China, you need to put this shiz on everything. Just like that little grandma says in the Franks Red Hot Buffalo Sauce commercial. I wonder if she ever visited China?
Highly recommend! Address: 24 Xinyuanxili M. St. (at NW of Yu Yang Hotel)

Ding Ling Visitor Center and Tomb Underground Ming Tombs
We visited the Ding Ling tombs and went all the way down to the Underground chambers. Very interesting.
Located in the southern foot of Tianshou Mountain in Changping County of Beijing, Dingling Tomb is the mausoleum of Emperor Zhu Yijun (1563 - 1620) of Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and his two empresses, Empress Xiaoduan and Empress Xiaojing. Zhu Yijun was the thirteenth emperor and occupied the throne for 48 years, the longest among all of the emperors of the Ming Dynasty. Built over six years between 1584 and 1590, the tomb, which covers an area of 180,000 square meters (44 acres), is of great historical value, attracting millions of tourists from home and abroad every year.
The aboveground part of Dingling Tomb presents a square front and circular rear construction layout, symbolizing the ancient Chinese philosophical concept of heaven is round and the earth is square. Three white marble stone bridges lead you to the entrance of Dingling Tomb, where you will see a high tablet pavilion. Further back, there is an enclosing wall named Wailuo Wall around the mausoleum. At the axis position of the wall a palace gate was set, which is the first door. The yellow glazed tiles, eaves, archway, rafters and columns are all sculptured from stone, and colorfully painted. Inside the Wailuo Wall, there are three courtyards in the square front part, and the Treasure City in the circular rear part. The first courtyard has no buildings and facilities, but three Divine Kitchens on the left side outside the courtyard, and three Divine Storerooms on the right side. The gate of the second courtyard is named Blessing and Grace Gate (Ling’en Gate). There is a base with railings, and the top of the railings are decorated with stone dragon heads and phoenix heads. The Blessing and Grace Palace (Ling’en Palace) is in the third courtyard. It is the place for making sacrifice to Emperor Zhu Yijun and his two empresses. The stone road in the middle of the courtyard is engraved with a dragon and a phoenix playing with a pearl. The third courtyard has a two-column archway door called Lingxing Gate and a few stone tables on which sacrificial items are placed. The circular rear part has the Treasure City, where Emperor Zhu Yijun and his two empresses were buried. It is covered with earth and the middle part stands out, looking like a round castle.
The underground part is the Underground Palace, which was unearthed between 1956 and 1958. It is the most valuable part of Dingling Tomb. The palace really deserves a careful visit as it is the only unearthed palace of the Thirteen Imperial Tombs of Ming Dynasty. Starting from the ground, after more than 40 meters (130 feet) of the underground tunnel, you can access to the hidden palace. The stone structure of the palace is a representative style of the Ming Dynasty. The entire palace is divided into five communicant vaulted halls: the front, the middle, the rear, the left and the right halls, among which the rear hall is the main and largest. The entrance of each hall is made of sculptured jade, and the floors are covered with gilded bricks. In the middle of each hall is a white marble coffin. On each coffin there is a square hole called Gold Well filled with loess. A paved path leads to the central hall where there are three white marble thrones, in front of which incense, candles and flowers were set. Before each of them, there are the glazed Five Offerings and a blue china jar that would have been filled with sesame oil to be used for lamps. The coffins of Emperor Zhu Yijun and his two empresses are in the rear hall. There are also some precious items displayed with these coffins, such as jades, vases, red lacquer boxes, golden crown, silver, silk and so on. The Underground Palace unearthed a total of over 3,000 pieces of cultural relics, including four national treasures: the gold imperial crown, the gold empress crown, glowing pearl and tri-colored glazed pottery of the Ming Dynasty. These relics are all stored in the Dingling Tomb Museum.

Heaven's Gate On Tianmen Mountain, Big Gate Road | China Vlog_12
Heaven's Gate On Tianmen Mountain, Big Gate Road | China Vlog_12
The magical, majestic, Tianmen Mountain. It’s not just the mountain itself that is an experience. Getting up is one thing but getting down is actually considered to be one of the most dangerous experiences in China on Big Gate Road.
You can only use the cable car up or down. You can’t use it both ways. That made me wonder -how the hell do u get down.
This cable car from Zhangiagie City to Tianmen Mountain is the longest in the world and has 98 cars and a total length of 7,455 m . The highest gradient is of the cable 37 degrees.
The word Tianmen means Heaven's Gate. At the top, the main attraction is Tianmen cave, a natural arch in the mountain 131.5 m high.
Believe it or not, skydivers have flown through the cave and even fighter jets.
There are surprisingly many other attractions up the mountain not just heavens gate. Even another glass bridge.
Nine is a lucky number in Chinese numerology, There are around 999 steps to get down, considered a stairway to heavens . Or in this case a stairway out of heaven. Two words come to mind- very steep.
With 99 curves, Tongtian Highway is considered to be one of China’s most dangerous roads. I didn’t actually know this at the time...

1920's film of China: Marble Boat used as Tea House of Empress Cixi
American tourists in China in the late 1920's filmed this rare black and white video of their travels in and around Beijing. Here they visit the Imperial Summer Palace, specifically the palace reconstructed by the Empress Dowager Cixi (ruled 1861-1908). This enormous marble boat served as her floating tea house.
Weizhiwei - one of the best restaurants in the downtown Beijing China - The Gate City Mall
I believe Weizhiwei is the name of the restaurant. It is on the bottom floor of the mall. I went back a couple times. The Chinese restaurant serves a chicken dish with cold sesame noodles and a flavorful brown sesame sauce. I want the recipe! I could not find this restaurant on Trip advisor to write a review, so I submitted it as a restaurant to add to their radar. If it becomes available, many US citizens and other international travelers would enjoy the atmosphere and delicious food. In addition, the waiter had a translator app so ordering was easy!
GREAT WALL / Slide Down | China Vlog_14
GREAT WALL / Slide Down | China Vlog_14
The 21,000km Great Wall has a long history. It began in 770 BC It was continually built through different states and dynasties over 2000 years. Materials are stone, soil, sand, brick delivered by hand, rope, kart and goat. Its purpose was to prevent invasion and protect the silk road trade.
When Chairman Mao came into power, it was encouraged for people to take parts of the wall and use it as free building material. Thankfully, the tourist industry managed to save most of it.
27,000km long and over 6m in height. Usually the wall is on hills as well. To stop the horses. Every 500m or less on the Great Wall are flaking towers allow defenders to shoot arrows at attackers at the face of the wall. And they'd shoot out of these small windows. The Mongolians. They used to put smoke signals Like one smoke for 100 men coming or 2 smokes for like 500 men coming. And at nighttime they used to set fire 1 fire for 100 men or 2 fires for 500 men are coming. So there was about 3 million people in China at that time. And about 1.3 million people worked on the wall. Nowadays theres about 5 billion people in China. Workers were soldiers, peasants, rebels and political prisoners.
The Toboggan Slide Great Wall Slide Down
So this is how you get down from the Great Wall of China. So you have a brake and you can go faster. It picks up some speed. But you have to be careful you don't hit the person in front. Isn't it a pleasant ride? Very pleasant. I'm calling it The Great Queue of China Because it takes hours to get up there and back. Left at 9 o'clock in the morning by the time I got there it was 3 o' clock. End up an hour queuing and then... You only get an hour on the actual wall and thats it- you have to go back down again. So spent most of the day waiting. Was actually probably my worst day in China because all of the waiting in traffic and at the wall.

China Tour
China Tour
6 October – 5 November 2016
We started our #China Tour in #Beijing. In Beijing we visited the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven. After hiking the Great Wall of China we visited the Terra Cotta Army in Xi’an. The next highlight was the Labrang Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Xiahe. We were surprised by the fresh snow on our way to Langmusi. The monastery and the gorge were both well worth to visit. The road to Songpan through the Grasslands was wonderful. Near Songpan we visited Huanglong National Park with all kinds of small lakes in amazing colors. Off course we did not forget to visit the Giant Pandas in the Chengdu Pandas Reserve. In Shangri-la it was time for action again. We first get the Giant Prayer Wheel in motion and made a nice tour on a bike in the afternoon. More action was required in the two days trekking through the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Near Lijiang we climbed the 5596m high Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Unfortunately we had to stop at an altitude of 4567m. In Dali we faced bad weather. We hardly could see the three famous Pagodas. In Yangshou we rafted, biked and hiked to enjoy of the beautiful Karst Landscape. At last Shanghai showed us how modern China is as well. The Shanghai Tower is with 632m the second highest tower on earth. With the Maglev (the magnetic train) you travel with 430km/h to the airport.
