Sonoma-Cutrer Winemaker Mick Schroeter Interview
Cellar Angels interviews Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards' Director of Winemaking, Mick Schroeter - former winemaker for Penfolds and the cult wine, Penfolds Grange - to learn what makes the wines of Sonoma-Cutrer so special.
When you pull off one or two great vintages, you have the start of something good. When you have the single most requested wine in the United States for 22 years, you have Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards. Located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, the winery is situated in one of the greatest grape growing places in the world. Mick Schroeter is an Aussie, with a large part of his career based in Australia making wine with Penfolds in Barossa Valley, until he came to California about 20 years ago.
Sonoma-Cutrer has an established program that has classical Burgundian style in a New World environment. Mick Schroeter notes that the essence is a style with Burgundian roots utilizing New World technology and innovations to create a style similar to what is in Burgundy, but by no means the same. Sonoma-Cutrer has a very elegantly structured style, not like the typical California Chardonnays that tend to be more oaky, buttery, more full bodied. Sonoma-Cutrer is very fruit driven, very elegant, bright crisp with beautiful acidity that makes their wine go so well with food. They also have their own separate winery for Pinot Noir. It is artisan, hands-on, with open top fermenters and hand punch downs. All of the fruit is estate grown on two vineyards. One is in the heart of the Russian River Valley, the Vine Hill Ranch. The other is a spectacular site called Owsley Vineyard in the Southwestern corner of Russian River Valley. Mick spends more than half of his day walking miles and miles in the vineyards to taste the fruit.
Sonoma-Cutrer is the perfect blending of Old World wine techniques with New World style, with 30+ years of award-winning vintages. Learn More:

Wine Club Review: WINESTYR Part 2, Claypool Cellars Pachyderm Sonoma Coast 2012 Pinot Noir
Just the label itself is legendary. I love it. It just has a feeling of being old-school. Like it's the 1800's and it's being prescribed to me by my doctor to cure the flu. Meanwhile it's actually full of heroin and I'm about to develop a serious addiction. READ THE FULL REVIEW:

DeLoach Vineyards 2012 Estate Chardonnay Video Tasting Notes
In the Vineyard
On February 3, 2010, Demeter USA, the only certification agent for Biodynamic® farms in the United States, certified the 17-acre estate vineyard and garden at DeLoach Vineyards, fully compliant with their standards for Demeter Biodynamic status. As one of only sixty-four wineries or vineyards in the U.S. with Demeter certified Biodynamic estates vineyards, DeLoach is among an elite group of sustainable wine grape growers committed to farming in parallel with the Earth’s natural cycles.
The 2012 vintage is being described as excellent, outstanding and ideal” by many, as the wine grape harvest across California yielded generous amounts of high quality fruit. In our vineyards, textbook conditions saw near-ideal spring bud break, steady flowering, even fruit set, and a lengthy stretch of warm days and cool and often foggy nights during the long summer months. Late and light rains held off until our treasured wine grapes found optimal ripeness, bringing exceptional quality to the crush pad and into the cellar.
Conversations with the Winemaker
Our Old Wente Clone and Clone 809 vineyard blocks provided the fruit for this wine. After whole cluster pressing, the juice underwent native yeast fermentation and lees stirring. Extending the barrel aging time in French oak to 14 months increased the complexity and rich depth while still retaining the delicate fruit components of this elegant Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes
Our 2012 Russian River Valley Estate Vineyard Chardonnay glows a brilliant golden-yellow in the glass before opening with aromas and flavors of honeysuckle, fuji apples and pear. It is light, but weighty, with a full mouthfeel that coats the palate and a balanced texture that is complemented by bright acidity. This is a complex Chardonnay that will age extremely well.
