RV Travel - Anaconda Montana
Anaconda Montana was founded by the owner of the Anaconda mine as a smelter town in 1883 by Marcus Daly. Daly became one of the Copper Kings of the era and tried to dominate the industry. Much of the copper came from Butte MT but the terrain there was not good for smelting operations which emitted large quantities of fumes and required huge quantities of wood and coal for the furnaces. By 1919 the works in Anaconda had a 585 feet tall smoke stack, still claimed to be the tallest free standing masonry structure in the world. The smelting operations are long gone (but not the environmental mess they made) but the stack is preserved and is now part of a state park.
We found a very good restaurant in town (Donivan's) and had a wonderful time with our city tour in a vintage White bus. The buildings take you back to the late 1800's and are quite well preserved and well maintained. It is a fantastic little town (actually, it is supposedly the largest city in the United States in terms of land area, but the population is under 10,000) and well worth a stop off for a day or two to get to know the place.
Coming into Anaconda Montana
This is for my peeps in the cities and metropolises in our country who ride. :D It may only be 4 months out of the year but it's free y'all. And one of the things I love most about Montana.
EPA names Butte and Anaconda as priority Superfund sites
The United States Environmental Protection Agency named the Silver Bow Creek/Butte area and the Anaconda Smelter Superfund sites as two of the 21 top priorities in the nation for cleanup.

In this episode of Breaking Trail, Coyote Peterson will show you first hand of what to do and NOT do in the event that you ever stumble upon one of these beautiful animals. He will do this using the aid of a 750lb male Grizzly Bear who is an ambassador for his species; helping people learn more about why these bears need to be respected and admired, not feared.

2012, Special Citation - ASARCO LLC, Amer. Mining Hall of Fame
The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is proud to present a Special Citation to ASARCO LLC and its employees for their 100 years of copper mining and processing operations in Arizona.
Beginning in 1912, the year Arizona became a state, the American Smelting and Refining Company opened the Hayden Smelter to process ore concentrates from the Ray Consolidated Copper Company mine located east-southeast of Phoenix -- a mine that was later purchased by ASARCO in 1986 and that has operated for more than 100 years. The smelter has operated nearly continuously since its foundation, updating technology through the years to increase efficiency and environmental controls. It is one of three remaining smelters in the United States and produces copper anodes primarily from internalconcentrates.
In addition to the smelter, ASARCO has other facilities in the southwest including the Ray, Silver Bell, and Mission Mines in Arizona and the copper electro-refinery and rod plant in Amarillo, Texas. ASARCO has more than 2,700 employees including those at the Tucson corporate office, the mining and processing facilities, the Copper Basin Railway from Ray to Hayden, and Amarillo, TX. Annual production in 2011 was 409 million pounds of refined copper making ASARCO the third largest producer in the U.S. with significant reserves and exploration potential. ASARCO also produces sulfuric acid.
Throughout its history, ASARCO and its employees have persevered during periods of economic downturn, and have striven to improve operational, environmental, and safety performanceIn 2009, ASARCO emerged from a 4-year bankruptcy proceeding that enabled its creditors to be paid in full plus interest and funds to be set aside to completely resolve its legacy environmental obligations. Owing to a strong copper market, ASARCO's copper production is at capacity, employment levels are high, and operations upgrades and expansions are in progress.

TB Sanitorium and Preventorium [Silent] (Producer unknown, 1926)
This silent footage shows not only tuberculosis patients but also healthy children being institutionalized to prevent them from contracting tuberculosis and other diseases. The film opens with aerial shots in 1926 of the South Mountain Restoration Center in South Mountain, Pennsylvania, including the tuberculosis hospital, children's hospital, patient huts, open air pavilions for patient sunbathing, staff golf course, and patient burial ground. It also shows close up exterior shots of huts, hospital, chapel, patient store (interior as well), nurses' home, and the burning of the auditorium. The film documents therapies such as adult tuberculosis patients sunbathing on the floor of a deck with hospital attendants monitoring their behavior. Another therapy shown includes patients sitting with their mouths open, holding small mirrors to reflect the sunlight into their mouths. Well but undernourished children (called Fresh Air Kids) who come to the Center for the summer to gain better health are shown arriving at the center in buses, getting physical exams, and having their hair shaved, playing on playground equipment designed to optimize exercise, sunbathing with a single, long cloth covering their faces, picnicking, hiking in formation, waiting in line to get a drink of milk, participating in formal flag lowering ceremonies, boxing (both male and female children), and leaving in buses and trains. Children hospitalized due to undernourishment or other diseases like pneumonia are shown sleigh riding, throwing snowballs, having their hands inspected in their dormitory, at recreation time with doll making and board games, swinging, and playing jacks. Nurses are shown in formation walking down the steps of their home, playing on swings, and with patients, taking their temperatures, inspecting hands, etc. African-American children are shown in this film.
