We're in one of Britain's favourite destinations. Is there anywhere that defies expectation as much as Tenerife? For decades the Canary's largest island has been a package holiday mecca. With miles of beautiful beaches, year round sunshine and top quality all inclusives encouraging over 5 million of us to visit every year. But for those with an adventurous spirit, Tenerife gives so much more. Cycling, hiking, water sports, caving and some truly epic drives are just a sample of what's waiting for you outside the resort. Tenerife was formed by eruptions by Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain, and the volcano at the centre of the island. These eruptions gave birth to some of Tenerife most iconic landscapes such as the black sand beach at Los Gigantes, the boulder strewn National Park and the rugged mountains and rainforests of Anaga, all of this melts away at the coast into some of Spain's most idyllic beaches and lively resorts. Tourists began visiting north Tenerife in the 1960s but it wasn't until the 80s, when tourism boomed in the south, where the hotter and dryer climate attracted British holidaymakers looking for guaranteed sun. Costa Adeje, Las Americas, Siam Park, Los Cristianos, these are all firm favourites for Tenerife's British visitors. However I hope I can inspire you to explore Tenerife and experience everything it has to offer. It has never been easier to hire a car, go on an adventure, and make the most of your holiday. Join us as we head north into the heart of Tenerife. Would I find authentic Canarian culture? Could I find adventure on this well travelled path?Could I discover what made Tenerife into such an attractive destination in the first place? We leave the south behind to explore Tenerife's capital, Santa Cruz and then on day two we'll adventure into Teide National Park to discover some of the most epic landscapes I have ever seen. This is Tenerife like you've never seen it before.
Like any good adventure, our journey begins at the airport. After dropping the car with a handy meet and greet service we were straight into a lounge before our flight. A quiet seat, all the food one could want, free drinks and high speed WiFi make a lounge a great way to start any trip abroad. Soon enough we were boarding and on our way. After a four and a half hour flight, we touched down as most tourists do at Tenerife South Airport. From here, we had a Holiday Extras transfer already booked. We followed the instructions on our confirmation and were picked up by our driver at the car hire desks before being taken directly to our accommodation in Santa Cruz. After a long day's travel this really does take the hassle away from what can be the most stressful part of any holiday. The next morning, I woke up ready to start exploring Santa Cruz. First on the agenda was heading out to get a classic Spanish breakfast. So it might not be the healthiest way to start your day but it's definitely the tastiest. So we've got freshly squeezed orange juice, good churros and the star of the show, which is this thick, chocolate sauce. It's come in a mug. I'm not sure if you're meant to drink it because that would be something else. But I know what you are meant to do is get these guys and dunk them in, and then enjoy. Churros are a traditional Spanish and Portugese breakfast snack made from dough created by mixing, flour, water and salt. They're fried until crunchy and served with thick hot chocolate. So after all that chocolate I'm thinking it's a good idea to walk it off, so we're heading to Parque Garcia Sanabría and to do that we're using the trusty Google Maps. So you type in where you need to go and follow the blue dots. Now there is a tram system that runs through town but actually it's quickest just to walk most of the time so we're going to do exactly that. Parque Garcia Sanabría is an oasis of calm in the heart of Santa Cruz. Covering 17 acres, the park is named after the mayor who approved its construction in the 1920s. The park is used by locals for dog walking, exercising, relaxing and just generally unwinding. As I walked along the sun-dappled pathways, I didn't see any tourists at all.

One of our top 10 favourite things to do in Tenerife is to take a walk in the Mercedes Forest, up in the Anaga Mountains.
Now, in this video I’ll be telling you a little bit about what you should expect and a bit more about the forest itself.
Now if you’re feeling a bit outdoors-y I would definitely recommend heading off the beaten track and into the Mercedes Forest, which is up in the Anaga Mountains. Now this is in the north of the island, which is the oldest part, formed between 7 to 9 million years ago.
So we rented a car and drove up into the mountains and spent probably a couple of hours in the forest. You can spend more than that, but it was a bit rainy and cloudy so we decided to cut it a little bit short.
We also didn’t really come prepared and wore trainers and didn’t bring coats with us. Probably wasn’t the best idea since it was a bit muddy. So I’d definitely recommend bringing some shoes you don’t mind getting wet and dirty and a coat as well.
It’s a super quiet enchanted forest, that feels a little bit like you’ve stepped back in time into a fairytale. There are beautiful twisting ancient trees and roots that come up really high. I wouldn’t worry too much though, because there are several trails you can follow and they each take you on a different sensory experience.
If you’ve come to Tenerife for a beach holiday, that’s great because there are some absolutely stunning beaches. but you have to spend at least one day in the north of the island, because, if I’m honest, you’ll find some of the most beautiful landscapes of any of the Canary Islands.

El Mirador Restaurant Tenerife - Playa de Benijo
We spent a day traveling from La Laguna through the Anaga Mountains to the North of Tenerife. The goal was the have lunch at one of the great seafood restaurants in the area around Benijo and Playa de Benijo.
Driving through Anaga Mountains is fantastic with some genuinely stunning views on the way.
The whole journey takes around 50 minutes because you have to go all the way to the clouds and then back down to the sea level.
I had three restaurants in my eye. Restaurant Playa Casa Africa, Restaurante La Ola and Restaurant El Mirador.
All of them have some great reviews on Google. However, there was no space to park the car around the first two, so we ended up in the El Mirador. And what a good luck it was.
Restaurant El Mirador was excellent. It's tiny, with only one person serving people and one in the kitchen. Because of that, you have to be ready for some long waiting times to get your order. But, in my opinion, it's well worth it.
The view over the Playa de Benijo from the El Mirador terrace is beautiful, and the food we got was extremely good. Fresh seafood, well seasoned and cooked.
Also, be ready to reach into your wallet. We left 50€ there for two people.
Nonetheless, I think it was one of the best restaurant experiences we had in Tenerife.
After the great meal, we walked down the cliff to the Playa de Benijo. Unfortunately, it wasn't the sunniest day. However, we still had a lot of fun fighting the waves in the ocean.
It was one of the best days in Tenerife.

Tenerife is the largest and most populated island of the seven Canary Islands. It is also the most populated island of Spain, with a land area of 2,034.38 square kilometres (785 sq mi) and 904,713 inhabitants,] 43 percent of the total population of the Canary Islands.Tenerife is the largest and most populous island of Macaronesia.
Approximately five million tourists visit Tenerife each year, the most visited island of the archipelago. It is one of the most important tourist destinations in Spain and the world. Tenerife hosts one of the world's largest carnivals and the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is working to be designated UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of the World
Tenerife is served by two airports, Tenerife-North Airport and Tenerife-South Airport. Tenerife is the economic capital of the Canary Islands.
The capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is also the seat of the island council (cabildo insular). The city is capital of the autonomous community of Canary Islands (shared with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), sharing governmental institutions such as presidency and ministries. Between the 1833 territorial division of Spain and 1927, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands. In 1927 the Crown ordered that the capital of the Canary Islands be shared, as it remains at present.Santa Cruz contains the modern Auditorio de Tenerife, the architectural symbol of the Canary Islands.
The island is home to the University of La Laguna; founded in 1792 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, it is the oldest university in the Canaries. The city of La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the second city most populated on the island and the third in the archipelago. It was capital of the Canary Islands before Santa Cruz replaced it in 1833.
Teide National Park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located in the center of the island. In it, the Mount Teide rises as the highest elevation of Spain, the highest of the islands of the Atlantic Ocean, and the third-largest volcano in the world from its base. Also on the island, the Macizo de Anaga (massif) has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2015. It has the largest number of endemic species in Europe.
Siam & Loro Park
Siam Park is a water park in Costa Adeje, a coastal suburb in Tenerife, Canary Islands. Siam Park features a Siamese theme, and claims to be the most spectacular water attraction in Europe. The park was opened by the Princess of Thailand Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The principal owners are Wolfgang Kiessling and his son Christoph. . A second park is planned for the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria.
Loro Parque (Spanish for parrot park) or 'Loro Park' is a 13.5-hectare (33-acre) zoo on the outskirts of Crossport or Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife, Spain where it houses an extensive and diverse reserve of animal and plant species. The park was conceived as a paradise for parrots and has developed over the years into one of the biggest attractions of the Canary Islands, with over 40 million visitors. The park keeps orcas, which has attracted criticism from some organisations] and led to the zoo being boycotted by major travel agents including TUI Group (Thomson) and Thomas Cook.
