TURKEY: Tea and culinary delights - 4. Anamur - Izmir
Mamure Fortress was founded in the Roman times. It was actively used in the Byzantine period and during the Crusades. Seljuk Turks seized the castle in 1221. They called it Mamure, which means prosperous. After the citadel lost its military importance, a caravanserai was created on its territory. Recently, the ruins were restored and opened for visitors.
The most southern point of the Turkish Mediterranean coast was inhabited a long time ago. The City of Anamurum was founded by the Phoenicians. They were replaced by the Hittites. After them came Assyrians and Persians. Alexander the Great and the Romans checked in here.
Alania was founded in the 2nd century BC by the Greek colonists. In Roman times, the city became a haven for smugglers and pirates. They kept at bay all the Eastern Mediterranean territories and actively traded slaves. The Romans undertook the punitive expedition. And Mark Antony gave the city, cleared of pirates, to the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra.
Side - a resort town, and in the evening life gets busy. Tourists stroll through the streets and the beach side, sit in cafes and restaurants, consider souvenirs in shop windows. All, more or less, noticeable ruins are illuminated by the spotlights at night.
During the Roman period, Aspendos was one of the three largest cities of Pamphylia. However, in Byzantine times, it gradually fell into disrepair. In the 7th century, it was attacked several times by Arabs. And in the beginning of the 8th century, the city was captured by Seljuk Turks.
Gozleme - a traditional dish of Turkish cuisine. It's something between a pancake and a thin pita. The filling can be literally anything. Most often used are: spinach, cheese, meat, seafood, eggs, potatoes, mushrooms. Or all at once.
Silion was founded by the veterans of the Trojan War. People lived here in the Roman, Byzantine and Seljuk periods of history. In 1969, there was a bad earthquake. The mountain split. Part of it fell down, burying forever an amphitheater and an odeon, temples and houses.
The Olympus was called in honor of the mountain with the same name, it was founded at its footsteps in the 3rd century BC. The ruins of the ancient city: basilica walls, a theater, tombs and sarcophagi — hide in the thickets of dense vegetation.
The Patara Beach is included in the top ten beaches of Turkey. But in the cloudy weather, moreover, after a night of thunder-storms, it does not look presentable.
The antique city of Patara was one of the largest seaports of Lycia. Ancient Phoenicians founded it. The oracle of the local temple of Apollo was no less influential, than the famous Delphic oracle. The Roman emperor Adrian lived in Patara, and Paul the Apostle stopped here on his way to Rome. The future bishop of Mira — Saint Nicolas, the prototype of Christmas Santa Claus, was born in Patara in the 4th century.
The Xanthos obelisk was established in 480 BC in honor of the great fighter, who took many victories in fights and forever glorified his family and his hometown.
The ruins of the Byzantine basilica have remained, and the ancient Lycean necropolis.
The ruins of the antique Lycean City of Pynara, with its name in translation from Lycean language meaning round, lie at the foot of the mountain Kragus or Babadag, in Turkish language.
The ancient Greek City of Knid, or Knidos in Greek, is 110 kilometers from Marmaris, on the tip of Datcha Peninsula. On the left, there is the Mediterranean Sea, and on the right — already the Aegean Sea.
The name of the City of Kushadasi in translation from Turkish means The bird's island. And it is really an island. There is an old fortress on it. The island is connected to the coast by a dam and it is easy to get to it. But the entrance to the fortress is closed at night.
The Turkish City of Selchuk used to be called Ayasoluk until 1914. This name comes from the Greek Fortress of Agios Feologos — in honor of John the Evangelist.
Ethesus is the most popular tourist sight of Turkey.
The library of Celsius and the brothel, located directly opposite, — the most popular buildings of Ethesus among tourists.
Izmir is among the most ancient cities of Turkey. It doesn't lie in ruins as many of its coevals, it lives and develops.
On the Pagos Mountain, there are preserved ruins of the ancient Fortress of Kadifkale. However, it is not a museum sight, but one of old urban areas.
People still live here, leading their traditional lifestyle.

Anemurium Antique City, Turkey
A fantastic summer morning in Anamur. I took a long walk, and a quick dip in the beautiful, calm and clear waters of the Mediterrannean Sea. I couldn't hold myself from making this video in order to share the beauty with my friends.
The settlement was first seen in the 4. century BC in this city which situated on the furthest south coast of Anatolia peninsula. Anemurium showed it's most magnificent period as a Roman city between 1 and 4 century AD. The city was governed by the Byzantium Empire later and it partially continued it's vivid life in the 5 and 6 century AD. Anemurium which witnessed an eartquake in 580 AD had been left by the pressure of Arabians and pirates since 600 AD in the 7 century, today there are city walls, Aquaducts, palaestra, baths, churches, odeon, theatre, graves with two floors and ruins of ancient houses in the city which located on the Rugged Clicia in which trading, fishing and agriculture were seen. The findins of the Roman and Byzantium times which are held duringthe excavations in that region are exhibited in Anamur Museum.
TURKEY: Tea and culinary delights - 3. Gaziantep - Anamur
Present Turkish Gaziantep was initially an Armenian city. It was called simply — Antep. On February 8, 1921, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey added to the name of the city the title gaze, that means brave.
The Nemrut Mountain, 2150 meters above sea level, is not just among the most important sights of Turkey - it is the spiritual center of the country.
The tomb was built in 62 BC, by Kommagena's Tsar Antiochus I Teos of the Armenian Ervands dynasty. During his entire reign he did not leave any noticeable achievements, if any. He could have sunk into oblivion, like thousands of other kings and potentates. But thanks to the tomb, he secured his fame after his death for centuries. The tomb was covered with a high sand mound. Giant statues were positioned in front of it, up to 8-9 meters tall. Only the heads remained of them, but they create a strong impression. The biggest and most amazing building - the altar. The gods seating in a row on top of it, with their heads lying on the bottom - at their feet.
Ürgüp is considered the tourist center of Cappadocia. Residential caves and bizarre rock formations can be seen directly on the territory of the city or in its close suburbs. Restaurants serve traditional Cappadocian dishes - a blend of Turkish and Greek cuisines.
The Gyumyushler Monastery is one of the largest and most original cave monasteries. The monastery courtyard is entirely cut down in the rock. From it, they dug the caves on all of its sides.
In the second part of October, local Cypriots do not usually swim - it is cold for them. The air, even in the middle of the day, does not get warmer, than thirty-two - thirty-five degrees. And the sea water has already cooled down, it's not more than twenty-six - twenty-eight degrees. The beaches are empty. Only the citizens of the Northern European countries come here, who are compared to the walruses by the locals.
The Church of Antiphonitis used to be on the territory of the Greek Orthodox monastery, founded in the 12th century. Its name can be translated as open, which is one of the epithets of Christ. The church is decorated with frescoes of the 12th-15th centuries. While the monastery stood abandoned, looters cut them off the walls and sold them on the antique black markets. Later, several of the stolen frescos were returned. And the monastery was turned into a museum and is now carefully guarded.
Dipkarpaz is an administrative center and, in fact, it is the only town on the Karpas Peninsula, that occupies the north-eastern tip of Northern Cyprus.
The cape of Andrew the Apostle's - an extreme point of the peninsula. After it, the road turns to the south and runs along the eastern coast. There are no villages here too. But there are some hotels and camping sites for tourists.
Salamis was founded in the 11th century BC and around the 8th century BC, it became the capital of Cyprus. During almost fifteen centuries - it was the largest and the most powerful city of Cyprus. Several times, the city was destroyed by devastating earthquakes. The residents carefully restored the buildings. But after the attacks of Arabs in 648, when the city was also badly damaged, the residents chose to move under the protection of the better fortified Famagusta. Now, nobody lives here for almost seven centuries.
The old Town of Famagusta, or in Turkish - Gazimagusta, surrounded on all sides by the high stone walls. According to the legend, there were 365 churches. Most of them are destroyed. But the biggest and the most valuable were rebuilt into mosques.
Kyrenia - the largest port city of Northern Cyprus. Modern ferries arrive in a new port. The old one is only for yachts and cruise vessels. The marina is built up with hotels and restaurants for tourists.

Anamur, Mersin iline bağlı bir ilçedir. Adı Yunanca Ανεμούριον = Anemourion (yel değirmeni) sözcüğünden türemiş, rüzgarlı burun anlamına gelmektedir.
Geçmişi antik çağlara uzanan ve sırasıyla Kizuvatlalılar, Hititler, Asurlular ve Persler'in egemenliği altına giren Anamur, MÖ 333'te Büyük İskender’in doğu seferi sırasında Makedonya Krallığı’na bağlanmış, bu dönemden sonra kentin adı Anemurium olarak anılmaya başlanılmıştır. Anemurium, antik kaynaklara göre “Rüzgarlı Burun” anlamına gelmektedir. MÖ 1. yüzyıl'da Roma, sonra Bizans egemenliğine giren Anamur, Bizanslılar zamanında yeniden inşa edilmiştir. 【Antalya】
Once seen simply as the gateway to the Turkish Riviera, Antalya today is very much a destination in its own right. Situated right on the Gulf of Antalya (Antalya Körfezi), the largest city on Turkey's western Mediterranean coastline is both classically beautiful and stylishly modern. At its core is the wonderfully preserved old-city district of Kaleiçi (literally 'within the castle'), which offers atmospheric accommodation in the finely restored Ottoman houses on its winding lanes. The old city wraps around a splendid Roman-era harbour with clifftop views of hazy-blue mountain silhouettes that are worth raising a toast to. Just outside of the central city are two beaches and one of Turkey's finest museums.
【Konya】
An economic powerhouse that is religiously inspired and a busy university city that's as conservative as they come: Konya treads a delicate path between its historical significance as the home town of the whirling dervish orders and a bastion of Seljuk culture, and its modern importance as an economic boom town. The city derives considerable charm from this juxtaposition of old and new. Ancient mosques and the maze-like market district rub up against contemporary Konya around Alaaddin Tepesi, where hip-looking university students talk religion and politics in the tea gardens. If you are passing through this region, say from the coast to Cappadocia, then make time to explore one of Turkey's most compelling cities.
【Cappadocia】
As if plucked from a whimsical fairytale and set down upon the stark Anatolian plains, Cappadocia is a geological oddity of honeycombed hills and towering boulders of otherworldly beauty. The fantastical topography is matched by the human history here. People have long utilised the region's soft stone, seeking shelter underground and leaving the countryside scattered with fascinating cavern architecture. The fresco-adorned rock-cut churches of Göreme Open-Air Museum and the subterranean refuges of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are the most famous sights, while simply bedding down in one of Cappadocia's cave hotels is an experience in 21st-century cave living.
Whether you're wooed here by the hiking potential, the history or the bragging rights of becoming a modern troglodyte for a night, it's the lunarscape panoramas that you'll remember. This region's accordion-ridged valleys, shaded in a palette of dusky orange and cream, are an epiphany of a landscape – the stuff of psychedelic daydreams.
【Alanya】
A former seaside bastion for a succession of Mediterranean powers, Alanya has boomed in recent decades and is a densely populated tourist haven for predominantly Dutch and Scandinavian sunseekers. At night, the downtown area can resemble 'Vegas by the Sea' – aside from taking a boat cruise or a stroll along the waterfront, many visitors only shuffle between their hotel's pool and all-inclusive buffet restaurant, perhaps dropping into a raucous nightclub after dark.
But look up from the bars and tattoo parlours for a minute, and you'll find Alanya has abundant charms. Looming high above the promontory, to the south of the modern centre, is an impressive fortress complex with the remains of a fine Seljuk castle, some atmospheric ruins and a sprinkling of traditional red-tile-roofed houses rimming the alleys that climb up the hillside. Alanya is a tale of two cities if ever we saw it.
