Geology
Transported by wind more
than 183 million years ago,
tiny grains of quartzite
sand covered much of what
we now call Utah.
These sand dunes, up to
2,500 feet thick, eventually were
cemented into stone. Burnt
orange to creamy white in color,
Navajo sandstone, the predominant
rock in the park, is what remains
of the ancient desert sand sea.
Over time, water has cut and
shaped the sandstone to form canyons.
Approximately 1.4 million years ago,
and as recently as 27,000 years ago,
nearby cinder cones erupted, causing
lava to flow down these canyons,
filling them with basalt.
This redirected ancient waterways,
eventually carving new canyons.
Look up to see lava-capped ridges
that were once canyon bottoms.
Removal of rocks and minerals
is prohibited.
Park History
Created in 1959, Snow Canyon has
a long history of human use.
Anasazi Indians inhabited the
region from A.D. 200 to 1250,
utilizing the canyon for hunting
and gathering.
Paiute Indians used the canyon
from A.D. 1200 to the mid-1800s.
Mormon pioneers discovered
Snow Canyon in the 1850’s while
searching for lost cattle.
Modern-day the canyon has
been the site of Hollywood
films such as Butch Cassidy
and the Sundance Kid,
The Electric Horseman,
and Jeremiah Johnson.
Originally called Dixie State Park,
it was later renamed for Lorenzo
and Erastus Snow, prominent
pioneering Utah leaders.
Opened to the public as a state
park in 1962.

Silver Reef & Ivins Petroglyphs in Southern Utah
Treasures in America had a public event in Southern Utah and invited everyone to come out with us and have fun exploring some history in this area. We started in Silver Reef at the old ghost town and from there, made our way to the petroglyphs in Ivins. After a day of learning new history and the adventure that comes with that, we finished with a big bon fire in the desert.

The ruins of Beef Basin
Ruins of Beef Basin
Submerged petroglyphs revealed in Southern Utah.
One set of at least four that I found when the lake dropped to historic lows. I didn't take video when I discovered them and when I went back to film them a week later, three of the four were back under water again. Of the three that were submerged, one of them also had a pioneer carving that said, WE ARE HORNE. Through some research, I discovered the Horne Party was right there along that river in 1861-1862. Pretty cool stuff.
The amazing music you're hearing is Rammstein, the song is Donaukinder, and is the first music I've ever added to a video. I have no idea if I'm allowed to use it or not... Go buy their music on iTunes and you can thank me later.

Petroglyphs of the Sand Dune Site, Utah.
Indian Rock Art of the Southwest. Part 2 - Sand Dune, Utah, USA.
Sand Dune (also known as Bluff - Site 2) is a large petroglyph site in south-eastern Utah, USA, and is located a short distance north of the San Juan River. A short visit during a blistering hot July morning in 2005 yielded a photographic impression of what is available at this site. However, not all petroglyphs could be photographed properly: therefore I am grateful to Duke Hayduk who, in October 2005, went out into the field for making a photographic record of Panel K especially for me. This video does not at all pretend to offer a full inventory; I certainly may have missed some panels. All photographs have been digitally enhanced by me in order to show details better. In many cases however the petroglyphs are not clearly visible because of unfavourable lighting (many were in the shade that morning) or being much weathered. A few petroglyphs were photographed in the shade and (later) in slanting sunlight yielding very different impressions. Some images did not fit the 16:9 video format and therefore only an upper or lower part of the image is shown.
Remarkable are the many polissoir markings and atypical cupules that especially occur at Panel K. These features are fully described in the following paper (available from the author as PDF-file): VAN HOEK, M. 2007. Atypical cupules at two rock art sites in Southeastern Utah. AMERICAN INDIAN ROCK ART. Volume 33. pp. 105-116. American Rock Art Research Association. Don D. Christensen and Peggy Whitehead, Editors.
The rock art of Sand Dune is, like much of the Colorado Plateau rock art, mainly of Anasazi origin. Like many other rock art sites in the world, also Southwest USA rock art sites are often sacred places: please respect and protect rock art. Never touch the art and never disturb anything at such sites.

Ivins Utah Easter 2014
Easter spent in Ivins, Utah with trips to Kolob Canyons in Zion and Bryce Canyon.
odd ancient structure?
we found this odd ancient looking structure near skinwalker. Likely just a natural rock formation but we found it unique looking, and worth filming.
Finding Petroglyphs in St. George | Shot in 120fps
We wanted to put our new Sony a6300 to the test and shoot an entire night in HFR. So we headed up to a beautiful place called Anasazi Ridge in Ivins, just outside of St. George, Utah, where there are endless murals of native petroglyphs. It's a really fun hike and if you go as the sun is setting it doesn't get any more beautiful. Where are your favorite spots in Southern Utah?

Petroglyphs in Indian Creek, Utah
Anasazi petroglyphs carved into the rock faces in India Creek, Utah, somewhere between 700-1130 CE. The final shot shows nearby dinosaur tracks in the creek bed.
Along the Chinle
Eliminator, Benihana, Fudgesicle, and myself make the trek out to the big Chinle Wash Anasazi ruins on the Utah portion of the Navajo Nation. Located along a meander of Chinle Wash where it cuts through Comb Ridge, this ruin is awesome and huge! You can see and read more about this ruin in House of Rain by Craig Childs, as well as Sandstone Spine by David Roberts. Don't ask for directions other than what I've listed above; I'm not going to give it out.
I know this video doesn't have sound; I don't have my microphone hooked up to this computer. I am working on a version with both music and some narration. Hold tight until then.
