Walking Along Tuxi Ancient Street, Huangshan, China
The pros of staying in Tunxi instead of out by Huangshan (Yellow) Mountain would have to be Tunxi Ancient Street. This old trading town is an idea spot to locate yourself for trips up the mountain and into the gorgeous Huizhou villages.
Tunxi Ancient Street is lined with wooden buildings and Ming-style Huizhou buildings that date back centuries. Traders once visited Tunxi by river boat, did their trading, slept overnight and departed the next day. Now, throngs of tourists are jowl-to-jowl, wandering up and down the pedestrian street. Souvenirs, food, locals and excellent restaurants.
Protecting Hui-style architecture in China's Anhui Province
China's Anhui Province has made great efforts to protect its extraordinary ancient architecture. Known as Hui-style architecture, it's seen throughout the city on residential houses, ancestral temples and academics of classical learning.
Qimen, a county within Huangshan City, held a millennial festival where villagers gathered to pick overgrown weeds along old houses.
Now we all live in new houses but we keep repairing the old ones. This custom provides a way of protecting the architecture. All the labor force in our village would participate in the endeavor and that has never changed, said Chen Guoquan, a resident of the county's Pancun Village.
Over the past years, Huangshan has implemented the ancient architecture property transfer reform to breath new life to the city's precious cultural heritage.

Chengkan village, Anhui, China - An interesting journey along a rural road in China.
Chengkan Village in Huizhou District of Huangshan City is renowned for its well-preserved and amazingly designed residential architecture of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.). The village is located about 40km (24.85mi) away from Mt. Huangshan and about half an hour drive from Tunxi.
Chengkan Village is a wonder among the ancient villages in China for its elaborate layout. The whole village is arranged according to the theory of the Eight Diagrams in the I Ching (also Yi Jing in Chinese), or Classic of Changes, one of the oldest of the Chinese classic texts.
When stepping into the village, you are as if stepping into a maze: three main streets and ninety-nine lanes criss-crossing the village with hills and rivers surrounding it. Of course it's not the Labyrinth of Minos in Greek Mythology, but in Chengkan, a exploration of the intricacy of lanes as well as the primitive life of the locals is surely worthwhile. The special layout of the residences together with the mother river of the village, Longxi River, are believed to bring liveliness and fortune to the whole village and the welfare will be passed down from generation to generation.

Hongcun - An Ancient Village in Huizou Region of China
The Huizou region of China is loaded with picture-perfect, well preserved villages. Think white-washed walls and black tiled roofs that date back up to 900 years ago.
Hongcun is the ultimate and most popular village for Chinese tourists, and would be for westerners if they knew how gorgeous it is. Approximately 10,000 persons a day cram into Hongcun's narrow lanes to ohh and ahh.... and we were blown away.
Tangmo River Village - An Ancient Village in Huizou Region of China
Tangmo River Village constructed during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) was only 10 minutes away from Tangyue. Tanmo is laid out along the Tanganxi Stream, also called Water Street. The walk passed a 400-year old pavilion, Tan'gan Garden (modeled after Hangzhou's West Lake) and a pond used for fire prevention and built 1300 years ago.
Tangmo River Village's main section appeared in front of us with the covered Gaoyang Bridge that is also called Dragon Eyes Bridge. See Dragon Eyes Bridge for yourself in the video to understand the name...

The Ming Villages
Xidi and Chengkan, are two villages in Anhui province, these small villages south of the Yellow Mountains (Huangshan), are known for their long history, country scenery, and well preserved buildings dating hundreds of years.
The old merchant village of Xidi was cited in 2000 by the World Heritage List for its well preserved old architecture and water systems. Xidi is an outstanding representative of Huizhou traditional culture, building techniques, agriculture, and landscaping. The village has historical, artistic, and scientific value.
Rich merchant families of the Hu clan built large structures that remain standing from the Ming and Qing eras. The clan made an ingenious use of the local water resources to provide running water to all the houses.
The last part of the video is about the Baolun Hall, a must-see spot in Chengkan Village. It is part of Luo Dongshu's Ancestral Temple, built by Luo's descendants to worship him.
The hall was first built around 1542 during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). How colors of the drawings and structures in the wood are still vivid over 500 years remains a mystery.
