AMOS - ANCIENT CITYS E05 - with ENGLISH subtitle
Amos (Ancient Greek: Ἄμος, possibly from ἄμμος sandy) was a settlement (dēmē) of ancient Caria, located near the modern town of Turunç, Turkey.
History
Amos was located in the Rhodian Peraia in Caria on the Mediterranean coast. It was probably connected with Lindos which is supported by epigraphic finds from that city. Its connection to the poleis of Rhodes is further attested by the use of the Doric dialect in the inscriptions found at the settlement.
Amos was in the 5th century incorporated in the Delian league together with the other Rhodian areas, and is noted in the Athenian tributes lists as belonging to the community of the kherronēsioi (the people of the peninsula). The Loryma peninsula is the most probable candidate for this peninsula; the other members of this community are unknown. At some point during this period, Amos and the other two members of the kherronēsioi formed an economic union (συντέλεια, synteleia) in order to pay their tributes. The members of this synteleia must have incorporated the majority of the Loryma peninsula.
It is known from a set of three inscriptions that Amos in ca. 200 B.C.E. had a board of hieromnamones, sacred rememberers that were responsible for keeping and remembering legal agreements and other juridical proceedings.[3]
The inhabitants of the Rhodian Peraia, and thus Amos as well, were full Rhodian citizens. It seems however as the amians, being of Lindian descent, held no citizenship at Lindos. The inscriptions mentioned above indicate that the city (ha polis, that is, Rhodes) had the right to evict tenants and charge fines, showing that the polis had strong interests in the area.[1]
Remains
Hellenistic tower of ancient Amos.
Tomb at the necropolis.
The remnants of ancient Amos is centered on the elongated hill of Asarcık at Hisarburnu (fortress point), just above the gulf of Marmaris. The city wall is made of coursed polygonal masonry dated to the Hellenistic period, and is fairly well preserved on the north slope where walls and towers still stand 3–4 metres high. The wall on the south reach has almost disappeared due to erosion. Five towers are preserved, all of which are solid except for one. There is one gate in the northern wall, which is probably the main city gate. On the basis of the type of masonry used, the construction of the original wall has been dated to the 4th century B.C.E.
Of the intra muros remains, the theatre is the most apparent. Of the three known Greek theatres of the Rhodian Peraia, the Amos theatre is the only one with preserved remnants of the skēnē and the orchestra. The approximate number of possible spectators is estimated to around 1300. G. E. Bean found in 1948 a fragmentary altar to Dionysos in the area of the orchestra.
On the top of the hill, just west of the theatre, several fragments of an Hellenistic circular or semi-circular statue base is to be seen.[6]
Further to the west, close to the ramparts, are the foundations of a small temple in antis with a pronaos, 6.8 m wide and 13.8 m long.[6] Inscriptions with a temple inventory found in the vicinity show that the temple was probably dedicated to Apollo Samnaios (Apollo-of-the-hill), a deity only known from this location.[1]
The necropolis is located just outside the city proper, north of the city walls. Several rock-cut tombs are visible in the terrain, together with some inscriptions and fragments of monumental architecture.

Camellia Island Boat Tour - Marmaris - Turkey
Aegean Island Boat Trip from Icmeler
There are few better ways to spend your vacation than taking a boat trip through the serene and pristine waters around the secluded Aegean Islands off the Gulf of Hisaronu. Nothing can match the peace and relaxation of a great boat trip and one of the best places to book one, is from the quiet resort town of Icmeler, located at the western tip of the Gulf of Marmaris.
The scenic, golden beaches of Icmeler where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean would be the ideal place to start off your vacation and then, embark on your boat trip through the tranquil islands and bays of the Aegean Sea.
The boat ride is for one entire day, which includes 6 stops of 30 to 40 minutes each, making a circle around the Gulf of Hisaronu while going from one island to another.
Icmeler Aegean Island Boat Trip Details
This Aegean Island Boat Trip from Icmeler consists of:
1. Time: The duration of the trip is from 9 am when you leave your hotel to around 6 pm when you return. The time to the wharf is roughly 30 minutes.
2. Meals: A continental lunch will be provided which includes white-meat chicken, green salad, pasta and bread, and local fruits of the season.
3. Local drinks will be available in unlimited amounts.
4. You can take the tour on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The boat which will be utilized for the trip has two decks with the lower deck having an indoor lounge, where you can get shelter from the sun and also, drop into the bar for drinks and lunch. The upper deck, laid out under the open sky is furnished with sun beds and mattresses where you can work on your tan and if so inclined, dance to your heart’s content to the passionate Turkish music.
This Aegean Island tour on the boat from Icmeler will include the following stops:
First stop: The first stop is at Orpan Bay, where you get to visit one of the largest marinas of the Aegean coast of Marmaris, in the district of Martha Marino. Walk down the golden beaches of the Kiz Kumu to the Maiden Sand, which is a marina with a flagship restaurant and is surrounded by legendary beaches which have been centers of civilization since the Ancient Romans.
Second Stop: The second stop of this Icmeler Aegean Island Boat trip is the Selimiye Bay, named after Selim II, the heir to Sultan Suleiman, the Magnificent and the beautiful Roksolana (Anastasiya Lisovskaya.) This bay is also widely known as the Bay of Drunks, a reference to Selim II, who was an ardent patron of Greek Wine and a fervent admirer of the beauty of the female form. The legend is that Selim II died here, after falling off a cliff. Another legend however, states that he died in the Haman after drunkenly chasing after one of his favorite mistresses, leading him to fall and suffer a fatal blow to his head on the marble floor of the Hamam.
Third Stop: The third stop is at Camellia Island, where you get the option to go for a swim or take a walk up to an ancient Byzantine Church, dating back to the 12th century. White, pink and black mosaics exquisitely decorate the surrounding areas. At the entrance of the church, there is a mosaic circle where people make wishes to fulfill all their non-material desires. Also, near the church there is an ancient olive tree, which surprisingly still bears fruit and where people go to make wishes of a material sort.
Fourth Stop: The fourth stop is at the volcanic island of Sharp teeth. It is named such, because the hardened lava has given rise to a shape, which when looked at from a birds-eye point of view, resembles the open mouth of a Giant Dragon. The numerous small shells scattered about the island are believed to bring about good luck in financial matters.
Fifth Stop: The fifth stop is at Rabbit Island, which is a private island owned by the proprietor of one of the most expensive hotels in Tukey, formerly known as the SelectMaris. This island’s aim was to provide a peaceful, secluded retreat for famous politicians and film stars, away from the public glare. Have a nice time feeding and petting the rabbits which were introduced here by the hotel for the guest’s recreation.
Sixth Stop: The sixth and final stop of this Aegean Island Boat Trip from Icmeler is the Bay Aquariam. Out here, the water is denser and of a much darker shade of blue than the surroundings. Lose yourself in the crystal clear, beautiful dark blue waters and maybe even go for a refreshing swim.
