Ancient City of Jiaohe (Yarkhoto), Turpan, China.
One of the world's architectural wonders hides in Yarnaz Valley, 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) west of Turpan. Like a willow leaf, the ancient city of Jiaohe (Yarkhoto) with a history of 2300 years lies between two rivers on a loess plateau atop a cliff of over 30 meters (98.4feet). The largest, oldest and best-preserved earthen city in the world, Jiaohe is 1,650 meters (5,413 feet) by 300 meters (984 feet) at its widest; with an area of 220,000 square meters (2,368,168 square feet). It was included in the World Heritage List on June 22, 2014.
The ancient city was the capital of the former Cheshi State. An Indian proverb says, 'Intelligence is bound to exist where two rivers meet'. Jiaohe, meaning in Chinese where two rivers meet, is such a place. According to historical records it was home to 700 households, 6500 residents plus 865 soldiers.

The ancient city of Jiaohe, which lies about ten kilometers west of the small town of Turpan in Xinjiang, is one of the most visually spectacular ruins of the old Silk Road. More than 1,500 years of history sits atop this 30-meter high plateau and because of this it has become one of Xinjiang’s most interesting archeological sites – certainly one that’s worth your time to visit.
The entire city ruins run 1,700 meters in length and 300 meters at the widest point. During its peak it was home to about 5,000 residents and boasted a “main street”, several monasteries, and government offices. It’s incredibly well-preserved considering its age, as you can see in the video here.

Turpan has long been the centre of a fertile oasis (with water provided by the karez canal system) and an important trade centre. It was historically located along the Silk Road, at which time it was adjacent to the kingdoms of Kroran and Yanqi. The name Turfan itself however was not used until the end of the Middle Ages - its use became widespread only in the post-Mongol period.[1] The center of the region has shifted a number of times, from Yar-Khoto (Jiaohe, 10 km to the west of modern Turpan) to Qocho (Gaochang, 30 km to the southeast of Turpan), and to Turpan itself.[2] Historically, many settlements in the region have been given a number of different names, some of which refer to more than one place – Turpan/Turfan/Tulufan is one such example. (Others include Loulan/Kroran/Korla, Jushi/Gushi, Gaochang/Qocho/Karakhoja, Hezhou, and Jiaohe/Yarkhoto.)
The peoples of the Kingdoms of Nearer and Further Jushi (the Turpan Oasis and the region to the north of the mountains near modern Jimasa), were closely related. It was originally one kingdom called Gushi, which the Chinese conquered in 107 BC.[3][4] It was subdivided into two kingdoms by the Chinese in 60 BC. During the Han era the city changed hands several times between the Xiongnu and the Han, interspersed with short periods of independence.[5]
After the fall of the Han dynasty in 220, the region was virtually independent but tributary to various dynasties. Until the 5th century AD, the capital of this kingdom was Jiaohe (modern Yarghul 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) west of Turpan).[6]
From 487 to 541 AD, Turpan was an independent Kingdom ruled by a Turkic tribe known to the Chinese as the Tiele. The Rouran Khaganate defeated the Tiele and subjugated Turpan, but soon afterwards the Rouran were destroyed by the Göktürks.

China Travel Attractions - Tour Emin Minaret in Turpan
Take a tour of Emin Minaret in China -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Just outside of the city of Turpan is a fascinating union of Islam and China.
The Emin Minaret is a distinctive building, its design unique to Islamic-Chinese architecture.
The minaret was built in 1777, after the Qing Dynasty conquered the largely Muslim region.
The tower's circular, tapered design is simple, but its geometric decorations are very striking.
The construction of the building used local wood and brick, which gives it a uniform appearance.
The Emin Minaret is the tallest in China at 144 feet, making it a popular destination.
Ancient CIty of Jiaohe

The ancient Yar City, Jiaohe ruins (Xinjiang Episode 4). We go to the amazing Yar city, or Jiaohe ruins (river junction), near Turpan (Tulufan), Xinjiang, China.
This place used to be a fortress along the famous Silk road, in the old days. All the buildings are made from mud, and are still partially standing nearly 2000 years after they were constructed. Why? Xinjiang has a lack of rainfall, most of it is desert.
