The Museum of ancient Eleutherna - Homer in Crete, (the first archaeological site museum in Crete, although smaller in size, are similar to those of Olympia, Delphi and Vergina. The museum created to house the results of the excavations carried out for thirty years in the ancient city of Eleutherna. The exhibition is accompanied by original and modern audiovisual exhibits.

Its about 25-30 Minutes from Rethymnon, driving around the beautiful area outside of Rethymnon.
The museum is very new, very organised and the exibition is great. Inside its not allowed to film or to take Photos. Anyway, you have to keep in mind that one of the sculptures at the famous LOUVRE Museum in Paris has a statue of a woman, known as the Lady of Auxerre. Here in the museum is the sister of the lady of Auxerre, the archaic sculpture of the Lady of Eleutherna.

In this May 10, 2013 lecture with Nicholas Stampolidis, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Crete and Director, Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens, explore the significance of Eleutherna, one of the capital cities of ancient Crete, during the time period of the Homeric epics (ca. 1000--600 B.C.). Discover how its artifacts—made from various metals, clay, and glass—reveal connections between the city and the greater ancient world.
This lecture has been made possible by the Museum of Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art, Athens, Greece, in fondest memory of its founder Dolly Goulandris.

Yiorgos Kaloudis - ORTHI PETRA (NECROPOLIS)
Live recording of the album APTERA, at the Holy temple of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, “The Conceived”, Catholic Diocese of Thira, Santorini, (July 2018).
Kaloudis composes Contemplative music for his two instruments, the cello and the classical Cretan lyra, and experiments on the effect of sound on the subtle human emotions. With the use of effects and live loop recording technique, he creates sound layers that amplify the soundscape, enhancing the timber of the two instruments. The poetic expression of the bow, in the tonal/tropic form of compositions, the experimentation on improvisation and the use of multiple vibrations, creates an emotional imprint of catharsis.
APTERA is a tribute to the Ancient Theatre of Aptera in Chania/Crete that Kaloudis brought to life after 17 centuries of silence, (August 2017), in the first concert that took place in the newly excavated and restored monument, and named after this historical site.
On June 2018, the Regional Union of Crete, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Rethymno and the Museum of Eleftherna, invited him to give a unique recital of the Innovating Tradition at the Homeric Necropolis “Orthi Petra” at Eleftherna, Rethymno (8000years BC).
The composition Orthi Petra (Necropolis), for Classical Cretan Lyra, cello and looper, from the new CD APTERA, composed especially for the Orthi Petra cemetery in Ancient Eleutherna recital and named after this historical site.
The composition accompanied the statue of the goddess Aphrodite at the archaeological exhibition « Crete. Emerging cities: Aptera ― Eleutherna ― Knossos. Three ancient cities revived », at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens. (December 2018 - April 2019).

Under this burial mound where the open air cremations took place and the burials around it we discovered digging from 2001 until 2009 a very important monument from the late 8th century. It had four women buried. They were priestesses wearing many jewels displaying hieratic symbols. Unique burials from the Cretan history of that time.

Archaeologists on the Greek island of Crete are still making discoveries about the country's Dark Ages.
The ancient city of Eleutherna, near to where the god Zeus is said to have been born, is a particularly rich area for discoveries as it's remained relatively undisturbed for centuries.
STORYLINE
Crete is the cradle of the Minoans, the first advanced civilisation in Europe which was later overrun by the Mycenaeans from mainland Greece circa 14209BC.
Eleutherna, also known as Apollonia, was an important city-sate located in the centre of the island close to Mount Ida where myth says god Zeus was born.
The city flourished from the Greek Dark Ages until Byzantine times in the middle Ages.
The original complex included an acropolis (fortress), polis (city) and necropolis (cemetery).
Archaeological excavations suggest the inhabitants of Eleutherna were descendants from the subsequent Bronze Age civilisations of the Minoans, the Mycenaeans and the Dorians.
But the oldest part of the city is Orthi Petra, a necropolis dating back to the early Iron Age.
In the last twenty-five years, archaeologist Nicholas Stampolidis and his team have been digging at this site unearthing long forgotten stories held by the bodies buried here some 2,800 years ago.
This is Niko Maragoudakis, first assistant to professor Stampolidis.
This young archaeologist was born in Rethymno, Crete's second largest city 25 kilometres (16 miles) northwest of Eleutherna.
He explains This is the oldest part of the site comprising ancient Eleutherna. It is a cemetery from the early Iron Age. The Homeric times. The area is intact. The monuments without any later disturbance. This is what makes this so important to us.
The findings at Orthi Petra have almost been left untouched save for a few reconstructions like this memorial site believed to be the equivalent to a Tomb of an Unknown Soldier of that time.

MYKONOS PROMENADE by Minas. Direction Andonis Theocharis Kioukas
Re shaping Mykonos...
The CITY of MYKONOS approached Minas, an established designer, in order to involve him in their ambitious plan; the renovation of the historical promenade of Mykonos and it’s further emergence on an international level, through the designers eyes.
He accepted wholeheartedly and with his only condition being that he received no remuneration for his work. He wanted this to be his gift to Mykonos. Minas envisioned his designs harmoniously combining modern engineering with classic Cycladic aesthetics.
THE LAMP POST
Minas designed the lamp post with dual usage in mind. On the one side it works as a traditional streetlight. However when seen from the sea, the lamp post takes in consideration the wind and acts as a guide for ships. The post is shaped aerodynamically into a convex triangle, with its point always facing North. Made from 316 stainless steel and grey Dionysian marble, the components ensure resilience and endurance.
THE BENCH
Inspired by the seating of ancient Greek theaters, the bases are made from white Dionysian marble and the seat is constructed from Asian Teak wood bolted together by handmade stainless teel screws. The voluptuous shape of the bench was inspired by human anatomy, designed to be comfortable and supportive to
whomever sits.
A BRAVE CONTRIBUTION
This ambitious project intends to transform and modernise the historic Mykonos promenade into an open air art installation while simultaneously improving the daily life of residents and the experiences of tourists.

Στο νέο Μουσείο της αρχαίας Ελεύθερνας στην Κρήτη προβάλλονται στις αίθουσες του ταινίες fiction και ντοκυμαντέρ ως αναπόσπαστο σώμα μια ενιαίας εκθεσιακής διήγησης που στοχεύει στην κατανόηση των άψυχων αλλά γεμάτων από κρυμμένα μυστικά αρχαίων αντικειμένων. Ιστορίες που ζωντανεύουν τον κόσμο του Ομήρου για ήρωες πολεμιστές και θαυμαστές αρχόντισσες, για μακρινά ταξίδια και ανθρώπινες οδύσσειες.. Αλλά και ιστορίες από τον κόσμο του Ηροδότου για τραγικά παιχνίδια της μοίρας μιας νεαρής πριγκιποπούλας από την κρητική Αξό και έναν Θηραίο έμπορο. Και μια ιστορία ξενιτεμού, μιας διάσημης Κυρίας, που από την Κρήτη βρέθηκε στο Λούβρο, στο Παρίσι, και έγινε θρυλική, της Dame D' Auxerre.
2. ΦΡΟΝΙΜΗ/Phronimi.
Η ταινία, κινηματογραφική μεταφορά (fiction), αναφέρεται στο εμπόριο και τις εξωτερικές σχέσεις της Ελεύθερνας. Συνδέεται με το θηραϊκό στάμνο και μια χάλκινη φιάλη που εκτίθενται στην αίθουσα Α και πραγματεύεται την ιστορία της Φρονίμης, που αναφέρει ο Ηρόδοτος (Ιστοριών Δ 154-161). Πρόκειται για την ιστορία του βασιλιά Ετέαρχου της Αξού, πόλης που βρίσκεται ΝΑ από την Ελεύθερνα προς τον Ψηλορείτη, της νεαρή κόρης του Φρονίμης, του μίσος της μητριάς της προς αυτήν και του εμπόρου Θεμίσωνα από τη Θήρα, ο οποίος σύχναζε στην αυλή του βασιλιά, φέρνοντας του εμπορεύματα και στην πορεία του προς την Αξό θα στάθμευε και στην Ελεύθερνα. Με βάση την επιστημονική έρευνα του Καθ. Ν. Χρ. Σταμπολίδη, δημιουργήθηκε η μικρή ταινία με πρωτότυπα γυρίσματα που παρακολουθεί την ιστορία της Φρονίμης από την Αξό έως τη Θήρα

Древний город Элефтерна основан еще в минойский период, тогда он назывался Сатра. Был переименован в честь одной из Коритос - защитнице Зевса, после прихода сюда Дорийцев.
После завоевания римлянами Крита в 68 году до Н.Э. здесь устроили бани и две большие подземные цистерны.

Η αρχαία Ελεύθερνα βρίσκεται 25km νοτιοανατολικά του Ρεθύμνου, κοντά στη Μονή Αρκαδίου. Η πόλη αποτελεί το σημαντικότερο αρχαιολογικό χώρο του νομού Ρεθύμνου, ο οποίος μάλιστα δεν έχει ανασκαφεί πλήρως. Η πόλη της Ελεύθερνας ιδρύθηκε από τους Δωριείς περίπου τον 9ο αιώνα π.Χ. και κατοικήθηκε ως και τα πρωτοβυζαντινά χρόνια. Είναι σε υψόμετρο 380 m σε στρατηγική θέση στο σημείο που διασταυρώνονταν οι δρόμοι που ένωναν την αρχαία Κυδωνία, την Κνωσό και τον Ψηλορείτη. Οι κύριοι πυρήνες της αρχαίας πόλης βρίσκονται στους λόφους Πυργί και Νησί, Στην ανατολική πλευρά του λόφου του Πρινέ (Αρχαίας Ελεύθερνας) σώζονται αναλημματικοί τοίχοι της ελληνιστικής περιόδου, ρωμαϊκά οικοδομήματα, παλαιοχριστιανική βασιλική και κτήρια. Στην μεγάλη ακμή της πόλης ( 8ος & 7ος π.X. αιώνας) κατασκευάζονται τα πρώτα μεγάλα έργα, στις πλαγιές του υψώματος. Στην δυτική πλευρά του υψώματος υπάρχουν οι λαξευτές υπόγειες δεξαμενές, οι μεγάλες διαστάσεις των οποίων υποδηλώνουν και το μέγεθος της αρχαίας πόλης. Στο δυτικό τμήμα του λόφου δεσπόζει η νεκρόπολη της Ορθής Πέτρας που με τα έως σήμερα ανασκαφικά δεδομένα ξεκινά από τα ύστερα πρωτογεωμετρικά (870/850 π.Χ.) και φθάνει έως τα αρχαϊκά χρόνια (600/550 π.Χ.) Oι τάφοι περιέχουν σημαντικά ευρήματα τα οποία βοηθούν στην εξαγωγή σημαντικών συμπερασμάτων για την ζωή στην αρχαία Kρήτη. Eπίσης από τα σπουδαία ευρήματα στην περιοχή συνάγεται το συμπέρασμα για τις σχέσεις που είχε αναπτύξει η πόλη με την υπόλοιπη Kρήτη τα νησιά του Aιγαίου και την Aθήνα. H πόλη γνωρίζει μεγάλη άνθηση και μετά την Pωμαϊκή περίοδο μέχρι τον 9ο μ.X. αιώνα που καταστρέφεται από τους Άραβες.
Το μικρό αλλά πανέμορφο και πλούιο σε εκθέματα μουσείο δημιουργήθηκε για να στεγάσει τα αποτελέσματα των ανασκαφών που διενεργούνται εδώ και τριάντα χρόνια στην αρχαία πόλη της Ελεύθερνας. Υλοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του Επιχειρησιακού Προγράμματος «Ανταγωνιστικότητα και Επιχειρηματικότητα 2007-2013» (ΕΣΠΑ) από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης και το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού και Αθλητισμού, οι οποίοι είναι και οι φορείς λειτουργίας του.
Ancient Eleutherna, the birthplace of the poet Linos, of the philosopher Diogenes, of the tragic poet Ametor, and of the sculptor Timochares, is located on the northwest foot of Mount Ida, approximately thirty kilometres south of Rethymnon, at 380 metres above sea level. The city was allegedly named after Eleuthereas, one of the Kouretes, or after Demeter Eleuthous. The city's excavated remains belong to various periods. A thriving Hellenistic settlement has been identified on the Nisi hill, which was one of the city's nuclei, together with the Pyrgi hill.
Eleutherna fought against Rhodes and its ally Knossos in the third century BC, but sided with Knossos against other Cretan cities in 220 BC. It was besieged and conquered, however, and forced out of its alliance. Thanks to its naturally fortified location, the city successfully resisted Quintus Caecilius Metellus's attack in 68 BC, until betrayal led to its conquest.
Humphrey Payne of the British School at Athens excavated at Eleutherna in 1929. Systematic excavations by the University of Crete began in 1985, revealing important archaeological remains dating from the Geometric until the Early Byzantine period and evidence for continuous occupation from the Early Minoan period until recent times.
