LAOZHAI MOUNTAIN HIKE: Is Xingping Better Than Yangshuo? | China Travel Guide
We travelled from Yangshuo to XINGPING in this week's backpacking China episode. Our goal, to complete the Laozhai Mountain hike (aka Laozhai Shan or Laozhai Hill) and get to the best view in China.
Xingping is an ancient fishing village that became world famous when Bill Clinton visited in 1999. Xingping is usually a popular day trip from Yangshuo or Guilin, but I wanted to know if it's actually a better place to visit?
Xingping's mountains and Li River views feature on the 20 Yuan Bank Note and you can visit the exact spot from the image just outside the ancient village.
We visited in rainy season, so the mountain hike was not easy - and actually pretty dangerous.

Ancient Xingping - China
What a fantastic adventure as we spent our day in Xingping, with each turn in the road of this ancient fishing village bringing with it new treasures and beautiful people.
When we first arrived, we were quite taken back by the level of road works and destroyed buildings in the town, however we were unaware of the flood that had passed through in 2017. This gorgeous town has come out on top and we were so pleased to be there, eating and buying gifts.

Yangshuo County, China
Fishing with Birds! Cormorant Fishing in Yangshuo, China

These fishermen of the Yulong River, Yangshuo, China, use the 1,300 year-old technique of cormorant fishing!
They first tie a knot around the base of the bird's gullet, release it into the water where it catches a fish, is unable to swallow it, and brings it back to its master.
The fisherman then gives it a smaller snack as reward, much like a trained dog!

Overland Southwest China 1 'Yangshuo and hiking the Yulong River'
We took a 31 hour train ride from Beijing to the transit hub of Guilin and hopped on a bus for 90 minutes to the very pretty yet touristy town of Yangshuo on the Li river famous for the cormorant fishermen. Choosing to escape the crowds we got on a bus towards Baisha and got off at the Dragon Bridge and spent a very enjoyable day walking back along the farming trails following the Yulong river and through small Chinese villages back to Yangshuo eventually hitch hiking on some type of weird motorized contraption that was heading our way. A Highly recommended day trip in southwest China.
China Tourism - Ancient Fenghuang town
Ancient Fenghuang, a village in central China, used to be a frontier town, separating the Han civilization from the Miao and Dong minorities. It was an important regional center for trade and cultural exchange.
The riverside setting of the village, with its wooden stilt houses and narrow mysterious back alleys, makes it one of the most attractive places in the region.
These days, it has become a major tourist destination. While some traditions remain, much of the town has been set up to cater for the influx of new visitors, in some ways changing the face of the village beyond recognition.
Either way, Fenghuang provides an interesting glimpse of the many challenges and contrasts that exist in China today.

Dont Miss Bamboo Rafting Down the Yulong River Yangshuo, China
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that every tourist who visits Yangshuo, goes bamboo rafting on the Yulong River. There are different access points for rafting depending on how long you want to spend on the river.
Many tourists make a day of it; rafting, getting off at one of the stationary rafts to get photographs taken while rafting; stopping at a floating restaurant for a beer or food; or eating brought with picnic lunches.
The Yulong River was very low when we rafted and boatmen had to get off at different rapids to push the raft over. It was hokey, at times felt like the Small World ride at Disney when rafts lined up at the rapids, but still, so much fun!

I spent one week in Yangshuo (Guilin, Guangxi China) and saw some of the most stunning views in the world. It is famous for its fabulous Karst formations and the Li River with the cormorant fishermen. I have tried to capture its beauty in this short film and hope you enjoy it!

Strange Tree Village in China
Outside of Xiamen, I spent a few days riding out the rain at an exceptional guesthouse in the middle of a chinese village. Back on the road, nice straight, non bike excluding roads along side fish farms as far as the eye can see. Strange dead fish in the middle of the road. Regular peoples life’ s and struggles on the other side of the world. Banyan tree city?

Houtouwan: The Chinese Village Swallowed by Mother Nature
The Chinese Village Swallowed by Mother Nature. Houtouwan was once a thriving fishing community of sturdy brick homes clinging to the steep hills of the island of Shengshan. But it's now abandoned, with entire houses completely overgrown as if shrink-wrapped in a lush layer of green.
The only thing disturbing the bush's re-conquest of the village are the crowds of tourists drawn to the remote site 140 kilometres from Shanghai by its fairy-tale setting and East China Sea vistas.
Houtouwan was established in 1950 and prospered over the decades on the sea's riches.
But its tiny harbour eventually proved too small for larger vessels needed to sustain fishing, and the ships were diverted to nearby ports instead.
Guangxi Province Vlog: Biking the YangShuo Countryside!
instagram.com/timandglo
October 12, 2014
Day 2 in YangShuo was all about biking! We rented two Giant mountain bikes from our hotel, Phoenix Pagoda, for just 50 RMB per bike per day. We set out at about 10:30 with our bikes and map and didn't return to the hotel until around 7:00 pm. We spent most of the day on quiet country roads that wove through villages and rice fields. It was BEAUTIFUL. The terrain was mostly flat although we did encounter two or three hills.
During the middle of the ride we wound up on West Street, which is the heart of YangShuo's tourist industry. It's convenient for shopping, food and accommodation but is absolutely swarming with large tourist groups, especially at night. We recommend staying in other parts of the city and visiting West Street for shopping and dining. We stayed south of YangShuo town in FengLou village, which is close to the YuLong River.
It helped to have a map, but it also led to some frustration because the map was not up-to-date and many of the paths are unmarked. This meant we got lost...a lot. Lol. At one point we were concerned that we wouldn't make it back to a main road before dark, which fortunately wasn't the case. To avoid similar stresses, we recommend starting your day earlier and having a good grasp of distances on the map, which may not be drawn to scale.
Thank you for watching!! And happy travels!!
See you in four days for our next upload! :D

China Tours - Guilin, China
Guilin is celebrated for its picturesque limestone mountains and the meandering Li River.
An ancient Chinese saying describes the landscape in Guilin as the best scenery under heaven.
Its misty peaks rise as suddenly from the earth as trees in a forest, they surround the city like mountains floating in an imaginary sea.
With China Spree you are never far from the action, so your beautiful hotel is located in the heart of the city on a riverside avenue of the sweet-scented trees and walkway that overlooks the Li River. It's a great place for relaxation and meditation.
This part of the country encompasses China's most famous scenic landscapes.
While in Guilin we travel to Long Sheng for an off-the-beaten-path hiking tour of the spectacular Dragon Spine Rice Terraces.
Over the centuries, the drong and Yao minorities have sculpted 2,000 foot high peaks with remarkable step-like terraces. They use the terraces for growing rice. This transformation over time has created landscapes of utility as well as immense beauty.
In Spring, when the terraces are full of water, they resemble irregular silver ladders; and in autumn, when the rice ripens, the mountains turn into golden waves.
Visit the unique culture of local minorities and their villages where life has remained unchanged for thousands of years. We are able to hike between the villages following tiny stone paths carved out by the local people. This memorable journey is rarely included in the conventional itinerary.
A beautiful day waits! After breakfast, you take a scenic ride through the countryside, passing lush green fields and rice paddies, to reach the Bamboo River pier, where you embark on a memorable cruise down the picturesque Li River. The 40-mile trip has countless twists and turns and the scenery is reminiscent of classical Chinese landscapes—bamboo groves, sleepy villages, fishermen on bamboo rafts, cormorants, water buffalo, soaring karst pinnacles and mist shrouded peaks... your cruise concludes at Yangshuo, a rural town, amidst a haunting and surreal setting.
Time permitting you will have free time to explore this fascinating town on your own, followed by a tour on tuk-tuk to visit local farmers' fields and homes. Yangshuo's landscape of limestone hills, rice fields and lazy rivers is the very image of rural China, and ride on a tuk-tuk through this much-painted landscape provides a great way to experience the dramatic countryside, ancient villages and bustling local markets in a very intimate way.
Traveling back to Guilin in the late afternoon, en route, we will make photo stop to shoot signature sceneries of the countryside
If time permits, you will tour the Reed Flute Cave, nature's subterranean wonder filled with stalactites and stalagmites. Its name comes from the verdant reeds growing outside that are used to make flutes. The grand chamber known as the Crystal Palace, is an awesome spectacle.
