Ancient city Kameiros on the island of Rhodes, Greece.
The Kamiros is one one of the three Rhodian cities mentioned by Homer. Of the classical city, only the façade of a late classical fountain and some walls from the agora (market) remain.
The settlement was constructed on three separate levels of the hill. At the bottom was the first terrace with public buildings, market and temples, then on the second terrace was the main settlement and finally in a dominant position at the top of the hill was the acropolis with the Temple of Athena Kameirados (6th century BC).

Kamiros - Rhodes
The broader area, Kamirida, at the western and central part of the island, was inhabited during the Mycenaean Period.
Kamiros, along with Lindos and Ialysos, was one of the three city-states which, according to Homer, were built by the Dorians who settled in Rhodes.
The Archaic Period (680-480 BC) was a period of prime for Kamiros. The first temple of Athena is built on the acropolis, it acquires commercial relations with Greece, Minor Asia and Southeast Mediterranean, and it coins its own currency, whose symbol is the fig leaf.
In classical times, Kamiros, as well as the other two city-states of the island, participated in the 1st Athenian League.
In 412 BC, during the Peloponnesian war, Ialysios Dorieus, son of the renowned Olympic champion Diagoras, disembarks on the coasts of Kamiros along with the Spartan fleet, and convinces the Rhodians to unite in a single state. The settlements of inhabitants from all three old city-states will be transferred to the city of Rhodes, yet without them ceasing to be inhabited.
At the archaeological site one can still see the ruins of the Hellenistic/Roman city, which is built amphitheatrically on a side with sea view, parts of houses and buildings, the Ancient Market, the Doric temple and a few arches, the central street of the city, the ruins of the aqueduct, and traces from the Temple of Athena.
One of the most important works of the Rhodian sculpture of the Hellenistic Period, the headstone of Kritous and Timaristas, was found in the cemetery of Makry Langoni.

island of RHODES: EXPLORING AN ABANDONED ANCIENT FORT (GREECE) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - On a very hot day, let's go to Greece, let's visit the spectacular Greek island of Rhodes and let's make it to the village of Archangelos or Arhangelos which is one of the larger villages of Rhodes and has about 6,000 inhabitants (only Rhodes Town and Trianta have more inhabitants). It is 30 kilometers south of Rhodes Town on the east side of the island.
We are going to climb up to the castle of Saint John that was built by the Knights which stands on top of the mountain on the outskirts of the village. The castle was built after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 by the Knights of St John to protect the island against a possible Ottoman invasion. In the church of St. John church there are well preserved frescoes from the 14th century.
Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castlelike Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

RHODES ISLAND - Medieval Castle of Kritinia (Kastellos) - Rhodes
The Kritinia were ancient city of Rhodes.
Its history stems from ancient times. In Greek mythology, Althaimenis, eldest son of Katreas, grandson of Minos, king of Crete, because the oracle told him that he would kill his father, he left Crete, Rhodes comes in and colonize Kritinia. But homesick place and so he made the mountain Attaviros a temple in honor of Zeus Attaviros. Famous statues of this temple is said were two golden cows.
Originally, the settlement was coastal (the current position Kamiros Skala), but in the post-Byzantine period was moved more mountainous, for more security against pirates. The ancient settlement eventually sunk. Saved a few ruins, most of them in the sea. On land there are only the remains of an early Christian church Basilica.
In 1658, the Francesco Morosini attempted to conquer Rhodes apovivazontas army on the beach of Kamiros Scala, but the guard, timely eidopoiimeni from Halki, repel him. The subsequent safety of the settlement based on the castle (Castello). Therefore, until the liberation of the Dodecanese, the village was named Kastellos, from the Latin Castellum, which means fortress or Castel Nuovo, which refers to 1480.
The castle of Kritinia is a mixture of Byzantine and Medieval style and inside there are the remains of the Catholic Church of St. Paul and newer buildings, because the castle was used during the Venetian rule as Naval Base (Mariners).
The Kritinia is 55 km. from the town of Rhodes. It is built on a hill and has panoramic sea views.
