Amazing Kauai, Hawaii in HD
Kauaʻi or Kauai[3] (pron.: /kə.ˈwaɪ.iː/; Hawaiian: [kɔuˈwɐʔi]), known as Tauaʻi in the ancient Kauaʻi dialect, is geologically the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. With an area of 562.3 square miles (1,456.4 km2), it is the fourth largest of the main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago, and the 21st largest island in the United States.[4] Known also as the Garden Isle, Kauaʻi lies 105 miles (169 km) across the Kauaʻi Channel, northwest of Oʻahu. This island is the site of Waimea Canyon State Park.
The United States Census Bureau defines Kauaʻi as Census Tracts 401 through 409 of Kauaʻi County, Hawaiʻi, which is all of the county except for the islands of Kaʻula, Lehua, and Niʻihau. The 2010 census population of Kauaʻi (the island) was 67,091,[5] with the largest town by population being Kapaʻa.
Farmer's Market in Hanalei, Kauai, HI - KVIC-TV, myKauai.com [Event]
Nanea Marston explores Hanalei's Saturday morning farmer's market; meets the shoppers, samples the produce and kava.
Try the seedless tangerines. Um hm. Don't bite, insert the entire thing into your mouth, chew and swallow. Tip number one, we're learning here.
Tell me about your lovely produce. Everything was harvested this morning as far as the greens go.
This is our traditional kava bowl, this is our kava brew right here, and this is a beverage we've been drinking for centuries throughout the pacific islands. How do you use this? Add water? We get the roots sun-dried, we put them in a pounder or blender and turn them into a powder. Can I taste some? Sure Nanea. This is it right here. You gotta drink it all at one time. Really? That's a lot. It's all good. It gets better.

Napali Coast Whale Watching - Kauai Hawaii 2011
May 2011
The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a species of baleen whale. One of the larger rorqual species, adults range in length from 12--16 metres (39--52 ft) and weigh approximately 36,000 kilograms (79,000 lb). The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with unusually long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. It is an acrobatic animal, often breaching and slapping the water. Males produce a complex whale song, which lasts for 10 to 20 minutes and is repeated for hours at a time. The purpose of the song is not yet clear, although it appears to have a role in mating.
Found in oceans and seas around the world, humpback whales typically migrate up to 25,000 kilometres (16,000 mi) each year. Humpbacks feed only in summer, in polar waters, and migrate to tropical or sub-tropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter. During the winter, humpbacks fast and live off their fat reserves. The species' diet consists mostly of krill and small fish. Humpbacks have a diverse repertoire of feeding methods, including the bubble net feeding technique.
Like other large whales, the humpback was and is a target for the whaling industry. Due to over-hunting, its population fell by an estimated 90% before a whaling moratorium was introduced in 1966. Stocks have since partially recovered; however, entanglement in fishing gear, collisions with ships, and noise pollution also remain concerns. There are at least 80,000 humpback whales worldwide. Once hunted to the brink of extinction, humpbacks are now sought by whale-watchers, particularly off parts of Australia, New Zealand, South America, Canada, and the United States.
Kauaʻi or Kauai,[3] known as Tauaʻi in the ancient Kaua'i dialect (pronounced /ˈkaʊ.aɪ/ in English and [kɔuˈwɐʔi] in Hawaiian) is geologically the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. With an area of 562.3 square miles (1,456.4 km2), it is the fourth largest of the main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago, and the 21st largest island in the United States.[4] Known also as the Garden Isle, Kauaʻi lies 105 miles (170 km) across the Kauaʻi Channel, northwest of Oʻahu.
The 2000 census population of Kauaʻi (the island) was 58,303.[5]
Kauaʻi's origins are volcanic, the island having been formed by the passage of the Pacific plate over the Hawaii hotspot. At approximately six million years old, it is the oldest of the main islands. The highest peak on this mountainous island is Kawaikini at 5,243 feet (1,598 m).[7] The second highest peak is Mount Waiʻaleʻale near the center of the island, 5,148 feet (1,569 m) above sea level. One of the wettest spots on earth, with an annual average rainfall of 460 inches (1,200 cm), is located on the east side of Mount Waiʻaleʻale. The high annual rainfall has eroded deep valleys in the central mountains, carving out canyons with many scenic waterfalls. On the west side of the island, Waimea town is located at the mouth of the Waimea River, whose flow formed Waimea Canyon, one of the world's most scenic canyons, and which is part of Waimea Canyon State Park. At 3,000 feet (914 m) deep, Waimea Canyon is often referred to as The Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The Na Pali Coast is a center for recreation in a wild setting, including kayaking past the beaches, or hiking on the trail along the coastal cliffs.
During the reign of King Kamehameha, the islands of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau were the last Hawaiian Islands to join his Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. Their ruler, Kaumualiʻi, resisted Kamehameha for years. King Kamehameha twice prepared a huge armada of ships and canoes to take the islands by force and twice failed; once due to a storm, and once due to an epidemic. In the face of the threat of a further invasion, however, Kaumualiʻi decided to join the kingdom without bloodshed, and became Kamehameha's vassal in 1810, ceding the island to the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi upon his death in 1824. In 1815-17, Kaumualiʻi led secret negotiations with representatives of the Russian-American Company in an attempt to gain Russia's military support against Kamehameha; however, the negotiations folded and the Russians were forced to abandon all of their presence in Kauaʻi, including Fort Elizabeth, after it was revealed that they did not have the support of Tsar Alexander I.
Land in Kauaʻi is very fertile and is home to many varieties of fruits and crops. Guava, coffee, sugarcane, mango, papaya, avocado, star fruit, kava and pineapple are all cultivated.

Historic Old Kaua'i 1940 - The Garden Isle
I am pleased to hear everyone has been enjoying these great views of old Hawaii.
To recap, we recently discovered several vintage 16mm films depicting old Hawaii. The films were originally taken by an unknown photographer for his own, non-commercial enjoyment while on his way from San Jose to Austrailia in 1940. We purchased them at a garage sale at the house at an old local orchardist. The films were converted to digital by volunteers from the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County who used a special telecine converter to preserve historic images, and at no charge. Thank you!
This third installment focuses on Kaua'i, The Garden Isle. It appears the photographer stayed at The Kaua'i Inn, possibly the only hotel on the island at that time. Some of my favorite shots in this one are scenes depicting the sugar mill trains of Kekaha, plus pristine Hanalei Bay without the hotels. There are scenes of a family preparing for a family luau as well as many shots of local school children who, if alive today, would be approaching their eighties. If anyone recognizes their grandpa in any of these movies, please let me know! All Rights Reserved.

Ha'ena State Park
Recorded January 18, 2004. Ha'ena State Park is a state park located on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i often referred to as the 'end of the road'. The 230 acres park is situated at the terminus of the North Shore drive and is host to Ke'e Beach and a spectacular 1,280 foot cliff named Bali Ha'i. The cliff and other local beaches have also been the locations for several well-known songs in the 1958 film titled Bali Ha'i. The video is mainly of the pounding surf along Ke'e Beach.
