Kaifeng Impression 印象开封
Situated on the southern bank of the Yellow River, Kaifeng is an important city in Henan Province. With a recorded history close to 3,000 years, Kaifeng is known as one of the six major centers of ancient Chinese civilization. As early as the Yin-Shang period (1334-1066 B.C.), when Chinese society turned away from nomadic life to an agricultural existence, a city was built there. It then became the capital of the Kingdom of Wei in the Warring Sates Period (475-331 B.C.), the Liang, Han and Zhou dynasties of the five Dynasties (907-960), the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1137) and the Jin Dynasty (1115-1334). The Northern Song, in particular, established its capital in Kaifeng for 168 years.
The Eastern Capital, as Kaifeng was then called, was the political, economic and cultural center of the whole country, with well-developed handicrafts, bustling commerce and fine communication facilities. An old saying went that Kaifeng was unsurpassed anywhere in splendor and prosperity.
Repeated Yellow River floods, however, caused damage to the ancient capital of Kaifeng through the years. Many of its historical relics were destroyed. Among those that have survived are the Iron Pagoda, Pota Pagoda, Dragon Pavilion, Xiangguo Monastery, King Yu's Terrace and Yanqing Taoist Temple. These are all fine works of architecture. Their majestic beauty bears testimony to the wisdom and the cultural and artistic standards their creators attained.
The city today has well-developed commerce, transport, communications and educational facilities, and medical and public health services. The Yellow River that flooded its banks and wrought havoc for a thousand years has been harnessed. The Liuyuan Ferry at Kaifeng is now open to tourists as a scenic
Jewish Community.
It might be hard to believe. But there is indeed a large Jewish community in Kaifeng. The ancestors of these Jews were said to have arrived in China from Persia and India during the Tang Dynasty.
For centuries, the Jews of Kaifeng uttered the prescribed daily and Sabbath prayers, kept their religious holidays and observed strict diets.
Song City
Kaifeng was the Song Dynasty capital for many years. Ask your guide to take you to the Song City, a street flanked by small shops and taverns a thousand years ago.
The street is now under reconstruction on the old Imperial Street between the ancient imperial palace and another street called Sihoujie.
The palace has already been restored, and is open to the public. And another major part of the street, Xuandemen, will soon be completed.

The Iron Pagoda (Chinese: 鐵塔) of Youguo Temple (佑國寺), Kaifeng City, Henan province, is a Buddhist Chinese pagoda built in 1049 during the Song dynasty (960–1279) of China. The pagoda is so-named not because it is made of iron, but because its color resembles that of iron. It is a brick pagoda tower built on the location of a previous wooden one that had been burnt down by lightning fire in 1044. Along with the Liuhe, Lingxiao, Liaodi, Pizhi, and Beisi pagodas, it is seen as a masterpiece of Song dynasty architecture.
Architecture
This octagonal-base structure stands at a current height of 56.88 meters (186.56 feet), with a total of 13 stories. It is a solid-core brick tower with an inner spiral stone staircase and outside openings to allow light and air flow. The architectural style features densely positioned, articulated dougong in the eaves (miyan) and multiple stories (louge). The exterior features more than fifty different varieties of glazed brick and 1,600 intricate and richly detailed carvings, including those of standing and sitting Buddha, standing monks, singers and flying dancers, flowers, lions, dragons and other legendary beasts as well as many fine engravings. Under the eaves are 104 bells that ring in the wind. The foundation rests in the silt of the Yellow River.[3] Inside the Iron Pagoda are frescos of the classical Chinese tales, such as The Journey to the West.
History
In the Northern Song (960–1127) dynasty’s capital city of Kaifeng, the famous architect Yu Hao built a magnificent wooden pagoda as part of Youguo Temple (between 965–995 CE.) that was considered by many of his contemporaries to be a marvel of art.[5] Unfortunately, the widely admired structure burned down in 1044 after a lightning strike.[5] Under the order of Emperor Renzong (1022–1063), a new pagoda was built in its place by 1049. The new tower was built of nonflammable brick and stone and was dubbed the ’Iron Pagoda’ due its iron-grey color when viewed from afar (its bricks are in fact glazed red, brown, blue, and green). In 1847 the Yellow River overflowed its banks and the Youguo Temple collapsed, but the Iron Pagoda survived. Historically, the pagoda has experienced 38 earthquakes, six floods and many other disasters, but it remains intact after almost 1000 years.
In 1994, the Iron Pagoda was featured on a two-yuan Chinese postage stamp.

- Kaifeng holds a special place in Chinese history.
The famous historical painting of Kaifeng shows an incredible 40 m scenery of the city of Kaifeng which existed a thousand years ago.
Parks, lakes pavilions. Restaurants, folklore, generally a pleasant life engulfed the city
The city of Kaifeng being an important trade hub during this time, and was also historically inhabited by jews. The jews were trading with the Chinese just as it is today.
In 2009 Israel invited the Kaifeng jews back to their country and many followed the call.
Noblemen on horses, children on foot, playing, ladies being rowed on the lake, or carried by Sedans.
This scenes have been marvelously recreated by the Municipality of Kaifeng, so that once more people enjoy the life of the old days.
I came across dishes that were popular in Song Dynasty, and to my astonishment we tasted a delicious sweet made from yellow maize, a variety of nuts, and raisins, steamed like a cake.
Lunch was set as 1000 years ago. All in all a great experience.
Marco Polo went to China during his travels from Venice, and brought back a dish that is popular today in Italy and throughout the world : Polenta.
Polenta is made from yellow maize. The only difference from Italy and Chinese polenta is that the Chinese polenta is sweet, rather than salty.

~ Episode briefing:
- Welcome back to Chang-an, humble administrator. You will soon be assuming the duties of a new post recently created by our Emperor Wu Di -- Commissioner of Trade. You see, it was many years ago that our emperor dispatched an envoy, Zhang Qian, to make an alliance with the Yuezhi tribe against the troublesome Xiongnu. The envoy was not heard from for over 10 years, and feared dead.
Just recently however, he was returned, and the stories he has of distant lands are quite incredible.
Soon after departing, he was captured by the Xiongnu. After a few years he escaped their clutches and, being a loyal servant, attempted to complete his mission. His quest to locate the Yuezhi tribe took him far to the west, to the distant land of Ferghana, and the Pamir Mountains. It was there he discovered that these people prized Chinese goods, which had somehow found their way into these lands. In fact, their passion for our fine silk is particularly keen. This exciting news has delighted our Emperor, who wisely foresees that much profit can be made by government control of this trade.
In return for Chinese silk, the distant city of Kashgar offers beautiful jade and savory new spices.
Meanwhile, in Chang-an, lovely flowering trees can be planted to further beautify the city's streets and wards. The Emperor also requests that a Grand Tumulus -- his imperial mausoleum -- be prepared for his eventual use. It will be your honor to find a beneficial location for it and to oversee its construction. To the north, however, rumblings from the Gobi Desert grow ever louder and more incessant. The Xiongnu problem remains unsolved ...
~ Victory:
- An exemplary job! The door to the west has been opened, and trade flows in uninterrupted caravans between Chang-an and Kashgar, along what has come to be known as the Silk Road. Emperor Wu Di has not been disappointed in his decision to appoint you as Commissioner of Trade. Now, however, he has another equally important task for you.

Luoyang is situated along the northern side of the Luo River. The train station is located to the north of the town centre, and Jinguyuan Lu (金谷园路) goes from the station to Wangcheng Square. To the east is the Old Town and to the west the Wangcheng Park. Tourists come here primarily to see the Longmen Caves, The White Horse Temple and Guanlin Temple which all lie in proximity to the town, rather than the town itself.
