Follow the Ancient Tea Horse Road from Lijiang, Yunnan to Shangri-La, Tibet
The ancient tea horse road brought puerh tea from Yunnan to the rest of the Asian world. Tea and other goods were actively traded on these routes for more than a thousand years.
Lamu's grandfather traded tea on the tea horse road during his youth. He moved tea and goods from Lijiang to Shangri-La and back. We take you along the routes he used in the 1930's and give you a small peek into the life of a tea trader.
We finish the video with an interview with Lamu's grandfather who is 90 years old now. He discusses his experiences 75 years ago.

Three disc DVD set about China's legendary Tea Road. It crosses the roof of the world, winding more than 4,000 tortuous kilometers across 20 mountain chains and two desert plateaux. It spans four great rivers, and cuts through the territory of 26 different ethnic groups.
This is the ancient Tea Route, which opens Southwest China onto Tibet and thereby Nepal, India, Persia, Mongolia and Russia, and then Europe.
The legendary Tea Route, crossed by Marco Polo during his travels, but used by innumerable horse trains for countless centuries before him. Their tracks are beaten deep into the rocks. This series of High Definition films follows in the hoofprints of those caravans which hauled their baggage of tea across the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas to be sold in the markets of South West Asia and dispersed to the entire world.

The Ancient Tea Route was a network of mule caravan paths winding through the mountains of Yunnan Province in Southwest China. It is also referred to as the Southern Silk Road.
In 2007, KBS made the documentary and it's known to many koreans. BGM is from 'Too far away' composed by Yang Bang-ean.

A Cultural Show Performed by Local People
Impression Lijiang lasts for about one hour, consisting of two parts: Impression of Snow Mountain and Impression of the Ancient City. The show opens with the story of the Ancient Tea Horse Road and goes on to tell the customs of the people who have inhabited this land.
Around 500 local ethnic Naxi, Bai and Yi people were selected from nearby towns and villages to participate in the performance. They dress up in their ethnic costumes and accessories to perform the singing and dancing, horse riding and drumming, presenting real ethnic atmosphere to the show.
While the entire show is in Mandarin with no foreign language voice-over, the emotion conveyed in the acting, music and singing helps non Chinese-speaking visitor grasp the general gist of the story.
A Spectacular Show with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as the Backdrop

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is located 15 kilometers north of Lijiang City, with a height of 5,596 meters (18,360 feet). Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is famous for its variant and beautiful natural scenes, and is considered a sacred mountain among local Naxi ethnic people. It is also a popular hiking destination.
The bluish snowy peak serves as a magnificent backdrop for the gorgeous sprawling red stage / setting.
Starting point of ancient Tea Road
Located at the foot of the World Heritage of Mount Wuyi, Xiamei Village is the starting point of the Ten-Thousand-Mile Tea Road.
The Tea Road, a trade route comparable to the ancient Silk Road, ran 5,000 km -- from the Mount Wuyi in Fujian, passes through several provinces in China's heartland, then through the Gobi desert in Mongolia, across Russia's Siberia and leads to the Middle East and Europe.

Lijiang was one of the most important stops and today has one of the largest Old Towns in China. This is one of the largest tea markets in the world: Jinshi Tea Market in Kunming, Yunnan, China
This massive tea market is focused on puerh and contains hundreds of tea shops selling both pressed tea, loose tea, and teaware.
If you are in Kunming this place is worth checking out. You can take a taxi to Jinshi Chaye Shichang / 金实茶叶市场. It is situated at the north end of Kunming where Beijing Road meets the 2nd Ring Road. It is definitely worth the visit:

The greatest Trade Route that the world has never heard about: The Tea Horse Road
Canadian award-winning Himalayan explorer Jeff Fuchs has spent the last 13 years documenting and tracking Himalayan trade routes. Obsessed with documenting the oral narratives of the heights and locals’ views on the environment and culture. Fuchs sees the two as being inextricably linked. Author of the Ancient Tea Horse Road and most recently the subject of the film documentary, The Tea Explorer, Fuchs lived in the eastern Himalayas for over a decade. Fluent in Mandarin and Tibetan, he is the first documented westerner to travel by foot the Tea Horse Road, the Pashmina Route through Ladakh (Hor’lam), and the nomadic route of Salt (Tsa’lam) through Qinghai province. He has led and been a part of over 30 Himalayan expeditions.
This stunning and daunting route, so vital to so many of the remote Himalayan peoples, somehow remained a virtual mystery to the west for almost 13 centuries – it is now hopefully getting its due and some of the acclaim it deserves, as one of the globes’s most daunting and incredible journeys.
Fuchs is co-founder of the Keep Center, a Nature School on the Big Island of Hawaii and spend is either in Hawaii or in the Himalayan regions. He goes nowhere without a huge stash of tea.
