The country is also renowned for its wines and sophisticated cuisine. Lascaux’s ancient cave drawings, Lyon’s Roman theater and the vast Palace of Versailles attest to its rich history.

Visiting the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial in France
This Remembrance Day was very special for me and my Literary London classmates. We were honoured with the opportunity to visit Beaumont-Hamel in France to see where the Royal Newfoundland Regiment bravely fought during the Battle of the Somme. I hope that this video can share the experience of visiting the preserved Beaumont-Hamel battlefield with those who may not have the opportunity to visit it themselves. May we never forget the courage and sacrifices of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment during the Great War.
Watch as my classmates and I read Verse by John Oxenham and explore the remarkable memorial.

Video of this War Cemetery in Calvados, France.
The Allied offensive in north-western Europe began with the Normandy landings of 6 June 1944.
There was heavy and fluctuating fighting in the vicinity of Tilly-sur-Seulles immediately after the landings involving chiefly the 49th and 50th Divisions. Tilly itself was not captured until 18 June and fighting continued nearby until mid July.
The cemetery contains 990 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War and 232 German graves.
