Phuket (Thai: ภูเก็ต, IPA: [pʰuːkɛt]; formerly known as Tha-Laang or Talang, or Junk Ceylon in Western sources, a distortion of the Malay Tanjung Salang, i.e. Cape Salang)[1] is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand. Neighbouring provinces are (from north clockwise) Phang Nga and Krabi, but as Phuket is an island there are no land boundaries.
Phuket, which is approximately the size of Singapore, is Thailands largest island. The island is connected to mainland Thailand by a bridge. It is situated off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. The region has an area of approximately 570sq. km. and is made up of 1 large and 39 small islands. Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber.[citation needed] The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign traders ship logs. The region now derives much of its income from tourism.
The Phuket International Airport is located in the north of the island. There are many scheduled flights and chartered flights from domestics and other countries in Asia, Australia, Europe and North America landing in Phuket.
There is no rail-line to Phuket, but the trains do run to nearby Surat Thani. Songthaews (passenger pick-up vehicles) are a common mode of transport on Phuket. Phukets songthaews are larger[citation needed] than those found in other areas of Thailand. They travel between the town and beaches. There are also conventional bus services and motorbike taxis. The latter are found in large numbers in the main town and at Patong Beach. The traditional Tuk-tuks have been replaced by small vans, mostly red or some are yellow. Songthaews are the cheapest mode of transportation for travel from town to town.

Ahoy there me maties! We're here at the Phuket Yacht Club on Ao Yon Bay, near Cape Panwa, learning to sail and getting ready for our first ever boat race this month. The Phuket Yacht Club is arranging the first ever sailing race for kids like us called the ISLAND TROPHY. This two-day regatta, with kids from Koh Samui and Phuket taking part, will take place off Ao Yon on Saturday and Sunday, 22 and 23 March. The Island Trophy will be an annual event, alternating between Koh Samui and Phuket. The 2008 event will consist of three races on each day, with a beachside BBQ & Prize Giving on Sunday 23rd March.10-12 youngsters will race over the two days and the trophy will be awarded to the overall winner, with medals for individual races and age categories. The competitors will be kids from around 8 years upwards, so we are learning to sail these tiny Optimist dinghies here in Phuket as part of the Phuket Yacht Club's sail training programme, and are looking forward to the exciting races. Let's talk to some of our friends learning here: (Joseph & Manisha)
Phuket Yacht Club has a great team of sailing coaches who enjoy teaching youngsters to sail and to develop the club as a great place for sailing-oriented family activities. One of them is Katy who told us more: For more details on the Island Trophy, the Ao Yon sail training programme or how to sponsor the boats and teams, please contact phuketyachtclub@gmail.com We hope you can join us to learn or watch our first races on 22-23 March. This is Lilou, today's Young Reporter for Andaman News. Back to the studio. Bye!

Phuket Yacht Club, based at Ao Yon, near Cape Panwa, ran an intensive 10-day beginners Optimist sail training course, from 10th October - 19th October 2008, during the Thai school holidays. The last two days of the course included a regatta for the students, which was open to other Optimist sailors to enter. The course was free of charge and open to all Thai speaking children living on Phuket between the ages of 7 and 15. PYC has long been the most pro-active club on Phuket where junior sail training was concerned, but this course marked a new milestone in the club's achievement. It was the first time a yacht club in Phuket had worked together with the Royal Thai Navy and the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand to bring a professionally-run intensive sail training course to Thai youngsters. Additional Optimist dinghies to bolster the PYC fleet were loaned to the club by the Navy and were transported from the Navy base at Sattahip especially for this course, as Katy the Club Secretary of the PYC told us:
Jaray Tipsuk led this training, supported by experienced instructors and Thai national sailors who flew from Sattahip to teach the intensive programme in the classroom and on the water. PYC provided all the logistics, including safety boats, as well as volunteers to administrate and assist with the programme.
We talked to a 10 year old boy Jamie from Darasamut School about what he enjoyed, and learnt:
We also have some nice aerial footage from Helicam taken during training and regatta (and the prize giving)
The club needed support from local marine and leisure businesses including Image Asia and Helicam and other interested and enthusiastic individuals. Expenses for running the event were estimated at approximately 175,000 Baht to cover boat transportation, instructors' fees, airfares and accommodation, fuel and general logistics costs. Katy thanked them for their support:
On October 23-26th, PYC will hold an advanced Optimist race training course for youngsters who can already sail an Optimist.
Finally PYC is putting together a Sunday sail training programme that will give the kids who have completed the intensive Beginners' course the opportunity to continue learning more about sailing. Too often the skills gained on these courses are lost through lack of opportunity to continue.
One of Phuket Yacht Club's goals is to train local youngsters to enter the National and World Optimist Championships and bring trophies back to Phuket as Katy concluded:

Special - Phuket Yacht Club Open Day - canoeing, dragon boat
(AUDIO NOT WORKING - go to
or see text below:)
The Phuket Yacht Club at the picturesque Ao Yon Bay near Cape Panwa on the south west side of Phuket,
held their Open Day last Sunday the 30th of September, and despite the heavy rain quite a few residents, members, and visitors, both foreign and Thai, turned up to watch and join in
an informal and fun program of small dinghy sailing, canoe racing and especially international dragon boat racing, being held for the first time ever in Phuket.
We arrived as they were holding some short kayak or canoe races for several active kids, including Maxine, Lilo and Emma here who didn't mind get wet and splashed in the rain and sea:
During the rain break, Bill Smith, secretary of the club, explained some of the club's activities and so-called adoption of sailing dinghies scheme, to attract more sponsors and provide a stable financial support for this small but long established club.
Then Mike Downard, from sponsors Sail in Asia showed the first two groups of willing oarsmen and women, some tips on how to row or stick their oars in, at the same time and rhythm for the dragon boats.
Once they learnt the basics it was time to push their boats out and hit the water;
We went on board to experience the thrill and speed of these first timers:
together with the young drummers, keeping the beat in rhythm with the crew:
They lined up for a couple of short races and did remarkably well to keep them in a straight line without crashing into each other.
After the races, one of the crews practiced a capsizing to know how to act in an emergency:
After they pulled in to shore we spoke to oarsman, and environmentalist Marco Reinhard, who recently cycled and canoed all round Phuket, and to Mike about this first outing for the crews:
Well I think today went well....... sorry to get you wet.
Mike is willing to train and help crews form for proper races at PIMEX boat show on Sunday December 9th:
For more details on how to join or form dragon boat teams see phuketdragonboat.com or telephone Mike on 087 2810458.
While everyone was recharging their energy with a hearty BBQ and refreshments, we asked Katy Gooch, Sailing Secretary, more about the club's regular sailing activities in the next few months:

Phuket Yacht Club, 1st of this years Dinghy Regattas
The Phuket Yacht Club or PYC on Ao Yon Bay near Cape Panwa held their 1st of this years Dinghy Race Series last Sunday 25th January.
There were 4 classes of races with different courses for multihulls, large & small dinghies, and tiny Optimists boats for the juniors.
We started watching the 10 juniors first as they are the future optimistic stars of the sport, now growing in popularity with the PYC training courses run here. Philip here, already with 6 years of experience, was leading the race as we chatted during a lull in the wind:
Are you winning? ....... plain sailing
What are you going to do now? Tack.. show us..
A Thai boy nicknamed Tik or was it TikTak, also seemed a natural sailor, coming as he does from Ko Sirey School near the Sea Gypsy community
He was like a duck to water as he ducked under the swinging boom which would give most of us a headache!
Another Thai boy 10 year old Nasaron, perhaps destined to be a NASA astronaut, was blasting away in the weak winds.
Jonas, half Thai & Swedish, was in 2 minds whether to sit on the side of the boat to get more leverage
or stand up and rock the boat forward. Neither seemed to help as it limped towards the finish line with Philip well ahead already in the class.
In the 3rd class of 7 small dinghies, a youthful Thai woman, Ae, was labouring a bit in a Laser boat and slack sail as she told us:
What do you think of the boat?.... Need wind! Can you help me?
A group were milling around trying to find the best breezes on a balmy hot afternoon.
The race committee officials were anchored on a yacht in the middle of the racers watching for any funny business going on.
In the 2nd class of 6 boats, Mia and Bu, 2 experienced winning sailors, were having fun for their first time on a Taser boat:
Its great good fun .....1 more race.
Pelle, Leonard & young Adrian, the only threesome crew, were regretting their extra weight on board:
Whats it like? .....90 kilos.
Andrew & Mick were winning this class leaving the others in their Slipstream:
Topaz 30 year old design. ......creates the slipstream.
The big boys of the day in class 1 of 4 boats, like this trimaran helmed by Merv & John, were like giants compared to the small dinghies.
Katy was sunning herself with Simon, on a Hobie Cat:
Tell us about your boat ....... more breeze
62 year old Robert & veteran Phil were on a 59ER, certainly younger than them:
This boat is a 16 foot skiff ......Im the mature one.
Despite all the banter and jokes, they were still here for racing,
leaning out to gain some leads,
bending round the buoys or boo-ies as Americans say,
spinning up the spinnaker sails like this appropriate red on Chinese New year weekend,
& shifting their ballast or heavy bodies around to stretch their sails.
It was just small regatta at Phuket Yacht Club
but a good warm up for some now off in the Phang Nga Bay regatta this week. Life is certainly a beach for these lucky sailors.

All Tsunami warning towers along Andaman coastal provinces will be tested out every Wednesday.
Starting today, May 6th, people who are in the range of audio coverage from the early Tsunami warning towers will hear national anthems twice a day every Wednesday. This is an effort to test out and make sure that warning towers, which were put in places in vulnerable locations, are functioning well. The Phuket Vice Governor Smith Palawatwichai requests hotel and tourism operators to keep their guests or clients informed of the practice so that they are not surprised or panicked. He explained that the test will even assure visitors of Thailands preparedness and efficiency in handling any warnings. Nineteen early warning towers are installed in Phuket. They are scattered in all vulnerable locations including isolated islands.

Bangkok Hospital Phuket helped a school in Koh Yao Noi Island in Phang Nga.
Piyanooch Ananpakdee, Community Service Relations or CSR Project Manager at Bangkok Hospital Phuket, informed Andaman News with these photos that their Color the School Project 2 was held at Baan Ta Khao Elementary School, Yao Noi Island, Phang-Nga. The whole school had only 3 rooms which are not enough for students grades 1- 6. They needed to double the room from 3 to 6 classrooms. So, they divided the room with plywood. For 16 years the old thin walls had created noise pollution to students and teachers, so the teachers had sore throats. The students were frustrated and couldnt concentrate on what they should learn. So the 25 volunteers from Bangkok Hospital Phuket knocked down the old walls and replaced it with gypsum board wall as high as the ceiling. Helping hands were every where and they finished painting around noon. They thanked everyone who supported this project.

Phuket King's Cup Regatta 25th Anniversary: Go Yachting Episode 4
In this episode of Go Yachting we are in Phuket, Thailand, at the 25th Anniversary Phuket King's Cup Regatta. Boats from around Asia and beyond headed to Phuket to take part in what has become the 'one-to-win' in Asia -- the Phuket King's Cup Regatta. 1000 plus sailors of 33 nationalities took part in the 2011 Regatta in 12 Classes across a diverse fleet of boats -- 91 keelboats and multihulls, 38 dinghies and 19 Kiteboards. Kiteboards were introduced for the first time -- the first time a multi-class regatta of this nature globally has incorporated a Kiteboard Class.
The week was considered by many to be one of the best in the Regatta's 25-year history. The winds built throughout to provide some exciting on-the-water action, culminating on the last day with winds gusting to 25 knots. Winners were presented at the Royal Awards Ceremony, presided over by His Majesty the King's Personal Representative. With the prize-giving over, sailors and friends swapped stories and partied the night away poolside at the Kata Beach Resort & Spa. Go Yachting brings you all the action.
Also in this episode:
The NeilPryde Racing Series -- a global wind surfing series is heading to Thailand in 2012, and is joining up with what has become Asia's largest multi-class Regatta by boat numbers, the Top of the Gulf Regatta. The NeilPryde Racing Series will run in conjunction with the Regatta off Ocean Marina Yacht Club in the Gulf of Thailand. The NeilPryde Racing Series is coming to Thailand for the very first time.
Asia Superyacht Rendezvous -- Taking place for the 11th time, the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous is a unique event in the global Superyacht Calendar. Hosted by The Surin Phuket resort, the Rendezvous is a get together of superyachts in the region -- both sail and power. Held over three days, the on-water-action was complemented by shoreside parties and activities such as the 'Feadship Challenge' -- where crews build their own miniature yachts and have to blow them along a course -- and a first for this year, the 'Rendezvous Booty', a treasure hunt involving crew and guests.
The highlight of the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous, Asia's only superyacht event, was the closing night Gala Dinner, sponsored by Boat International, where guests enjoyed Asian hospitality and fine wines, and danced into the early hours.
Brought to you by the Go Yachting team.

Special report about Phuket Yacht Club, AoYon 1st dinghy & Hobie Cat Regatta
The Phuket Yacht Club at AoYon, near Cape Panwa, with a small but friendly beachside clubhouse, held its first dinghy and Hobie Cat Regatta last Sunday 21 December 2008.
It was a beautiful sunny day with clear water,
for sailing out in the bay beyond the oyster farm marked by the white buoys.
The starter boat signaled the messages to the sailors in the regatta.
There were only five Hobie Cats and Catamarans (and 15 other small dinghies) who started (their race category)in breezy conditions. Katy, sailing secretary, of the club described some of the 20 boat and sailors:
The Hobie boats, popular with beach hotels, can quickly reach speeds of over twenty-to-thirty knots in good winds.
Merv Owens, the new commodore of the club, was putting his feet up enjoying sailing in a bigger and heavier Catamaran. Katy described the other smaller dinghy boats in the other category:
The Topaz, and their sailors, are built in the U.K. but seem to like the Phuket waters.
Paul, the ex-commodore of the club, was also enjoying the Topaz experience.
Adam Bowers, from U.K., was helping with the timing & organization of the regatta as he has good qualifications as coach of the successful British sailing crews including recent Olympic winners:
After the first races they gave out sandwiches to the hungry sailors. Katy mentioned how they hope to attract more adult members to this friendly club :
The second part of racing started after lunch.
You could see the fun elements of small boat racing
but to really appreciate the excitement
both for foreigners, and also Thai people who seem a little reluctant to try this cheaper & easier form of sailing, I went on board with a Swedish-Thai family on a Topaz:
Another crew on a Hobie Cat, Tony Knight and Grenville Fordham, MD of IMAGE asia, organizer of the annual Phuket Raceweek Regatta, told me how they were enjoying this new experience :
If you want to also catch the sailing bug & learn some special skills from the GB coach, Adam gave more details of his expert training course to be held at the club this coming weekend:

Coral Island near Phuket or Koh He | Banana Beach
Coral Island, also known as “Koh He” which means crowded, not coral, is a rather large island at 3.6 kilometers (2.2 mi) long and about 1 km. at its widest point. Land area is only 1.8 Sq. km. and it has a coast about 10 km. long.
Located in the Andaman Sea about 6 km. southeast of Phuket Island’s Promthep Cape, this is a popular tourist destination for day trips and even for staying the night in one of the accommodation on Coral Island. To the north, almost 4 km. away, is the larger Koh Lon Island, and the islands of Koh Racha are south by about 14 km.
The main activities taking place on Coral Island are relaxing at the beach, snorkeling, diving, parasailing, fishing off the coast and spending time in a resort bar or restaurant. If you have kids, you might go straight over to Banana Beach, located on the northeast side of the island, for snorkeling and diving. In below video you see Banana Beach, one of the amazing beaches on the north shore of Coral Island. The beach is 230 meters (252 yds.) long and roughly 16 meters (17 yds.) wide, and has fantastic views of Koh Lon and Koh Aeo, two nearby islands, as well as Phuket’s Cape Panwa and even Koh Yao Yai and Noi on a clear day.
Coral Island is a regular tourist spot, so longtail boats go all day from Phuket. Once you’re here, you can rent a kayak, ride a banana boat, or go snorkeling or diving on the coral reef. The beach is fairly clean and has bright white sand. The beach is lined with palm trees, frangipani trees, and bamboo – really an exotic spot!
There are beach chairs with and without an overhanging bamboo hut – for a fee, of course. Prices here are rather expensive, admittedly it’s a ‘tourist trap’ – but many tourists don’t mind the small fee because it’s a beautiful spot and what’s a few Thai baht when you’re on vacation? There are some excellent restaurants to eat at (try the fried chicken!) and even shops with touristy things to browse through.
Coral Island is highly recommended because it’s one of the nicest beaches available to you when you stay in Phuket.
Accommodation on the island:
– Coral Island Resort – expensive for your bungalow on the beach at prices around 5,000 Thai Baht per night. Daytime beach is loud and sometimes crowded. Parasailing boats going back and forth makes snorkeling at the beach rather hazardous.
– Coral Island Club – gets slightly better reviews than the resort above. Oceanfront bungalows. A small step up from backpacker accommodation. Located on the southeast side of the island on the beach.
Restaurants are available at the hotels mentioned above. There are no reviews of them online, so you might leave a review here or elsewhere to help others.
To reach Coral Island you can go by one of two primary ways. First you could take a speedboat from Chalong Pier which will reach the island in about ten minutes. Or you could take a long tail boat in very calm sea and reach the island in about thirty minutes. Keep in mind that waves can get dangerous anytime between May through October. You are probably safer to take a larger boat during those months.
